Nolan Arenado is an insanely good baseball player and we need to look at what he is doing that we are not. He is an 8x gold glove and 4x platinum glove! It is very interesting to look at how he breaks in his baseball glove. It is a complete different approach and style than my own. Baseball gloves are different to every player but maybe we should try giving Nolan's break in a try. After all, he is one of the best third basemen to ever play the game. So maybe do what Nolan Arenado does with his Glove.

It can be pretty hard to form a glove with the fingers out like that because Rawlings gloves are notorious for getting a bubble in the palm right under the ring and middle finger. This method should be done slowly and carefully!

You could probably do a whole series on different third basemen. It seems to me like not only is there a lot of talent at the hot corner these days, but there is a lot of variation in glove brands, styles, and fielding approaches there than at other positions. Or I'm totally wrong. Either way, this was a great vid, one of your best.

I think another thing that makes a huge difference is how much glove is actually going to contact the ground to pick up ground balls. This is something that can be overlooked as knowing how much ground your glove covers will minimize mistakes and gaps in which the ball can slip through. Flaring the fingers open seems like it would cover more area to pick the ball up. It’s small but significant if you’re trying to transfer and throw within a second.

That is how my glove broke in naturally over the last 25ish years. I play softball so the bigger pocket is a must. I put two in the pinky and pointer out to make it even bigger. My 13" h web glove is wider than most of the other guys 14 or 15" gloves and closes on it's own.

Interesting. I feel the exact opposite. I've used my same 11.5 Nokona at short for 20 years. I hated having a bigger glove/pocket. I tried it for a couple seasons, but I didn't make the same plays and in fact, the ball had a tendency to pop out after hitting the web because there was so much space. When I switched back, I was back to making those DaDaDa, DaDaDa plays! 😂 With a smaller infield glove, I hardly use the web/pocket except for line drives. My main focus was/is stopping the ball obviously and then getting it out and into my hand as fast as possible. It just feels so much smoother and surer (if that's a word) with the smaller glove.

It’s interesting hearing you talk about putting your hand all the way in the glove compared to not all the way in. I never put my hand all the way in but I used to see guys always put their whole hand it. I felt it always created a bad pocket and creased the palm because it was pinching the palm instead of creating a nice flat palm IMO

Nolan also keeps his center of gravity a few inches lower. He is always low center. A lot of fielders stay taller in their pocket while Nolan plays much closer to he ground. Which how he moves to engage a grounder: eyes up, knees and waist low he only gets tall after he loads up his back foot for the throw. His center of gravity and sense of balance are simply superb. He has tremendous situational awareness both within his body zone and his immediate environment. His internal clock knows exactly where the runners will be, given the first few moments after the hit. The fact that he takes hundreds of thousands of reps also helps, obviously. Be he does this even with barehanded plays, off center plays, plays in which he has to work off the backhand. The dude just knows the traditional border zone around the bag... And then expands it as if he's, like, 1.5 other players. Great vid by the way. Enjoyed big time.

All good (major league) infielders field grounders or short hops with their glove pushing the ball forward. For instance a first baseman takes a short hop throw with his glove going forward towards the pitching rubber. Second and short push their glove towards home plate. Reason being that if they miss handle the ball or it takes a funny hop and they get the glove on it the ball stays in the infield and the runner usually doesn’t take an extra base.

what he's doing is similar to what an ice hockey goalie does - keep the ball in front of you at all times to control rebounds. flashy glove saves to the side look cool, but a goalie prefers to keep the puck in front with the body behind it to keep it from getting away from you. This way, your eyes are always on the ball. I played goalie and 3B/C for a long time and this makes total sense - same concept, different sport.

The ball hitting your glove closes the glove; same in barehand sports like cricket where you soft hand the ball and let the ball close your fingers around the ball.
As an infielder you also need to get your throwing hand to the ball so a closed glove works against you, not for you. Transfer of ball to hand is what the better play/ears make look seamless

@@ballgloveking my glove is fairly new so it will be a little hard to convince my parents to drop $100 but i will be on the lookout. I’ve made some 44’s on the website just for the heck of it, they are awesome

When I played ball I never had my hand all the way in. Back in the day we were told not to do that.

Nolan is the greatest fielding third baseman I have ever seen. Such a shame the Rockies paid the Cardinals 50 mil to take him.

After watching, you'd have to convince me that there's a meaningful reason for this video to exist. No wonder baseball is struggling.

I tried this, but it didn't work. I gave up 7 home runs in a row. The last one was hit so far, in my next start, my coach played the outfielders on the moon.

he could pinch his fingers and leave the first hole free.
move all fingers one position and put ring and little fingers in the last hole.
