Kimbangu is doing what is called shredding - he plays in triplets which makes his sound to be faster, highly charged and more involved. On the other hand Joponais is playing a straight ahead alternate picking which makes his sound smaller than Kimbangu's. All in all, it's a matter of technique and feel.

I think he is far better than kimbangu. Kimbangu is good also but there are some things you can't take away from legends when you hear them play. I will pick Japonais any time. My submission

Japonais' style is simple, laid back yet funky. Kibangu's is more versatile but his notes remain largely the same

In the latest reconciliation talks(quatre par quatre, Wenge) Japonais malade will participate/be brought back. Japonais is an icon...he played solola bien and most of Awilo's epic solos...he has his weaknesses but he can only be compared to his contemporaries like Ficarre, Pathy Moleso and Mboka Liya...not Kimbangu that Maison Mere fan crowd were just bullies..IMHO.One of Japonai's most underated works is terrain eza mine; man the Licks!!

Werrason's Wenge group and its artists seems to have the 'soul' of Bana Kin.... though a bit of competition both guitarists are indeed masters of their craft and it is a bonus for Werrason to have both in the group...the possible rivalry and clashes of egos is what should be professionally managed.

If you like Ndombolo music, then thank Japonais. Apart from these few introductions Kimbangu played nothing to compete with Japonais, Kapaya, Burkina Faso, Thiery Mogratana, Christian Solo or even Bikorine Makaba. No song by Kimbangu to even compare with Bikorin's Satellite, Decollage,, Kelvis Nkoyi, Yote, Kata Fumbwa, etc, now to talk of Japonais.

He has given us tremendous solos with werra, les marques, Awilo and others. He mentored Flamme during the days of Solola Bien and Terrain eza mine as the lead guitarist of the group. Intervention rapide, Augustine, Freddy movadi, Ndombolo ya solo, Karolina, Gladys, Mia Mulher, Terrain eza mine, to this day remain some of the best songs to ever come out of DRC, eclipsing songs such as those played by nene chakou, dr. Nico kasanda, Franco, caen Madoka, dally kimoko, baroza, diblo dibala, huit kilos, manuaku felly, Alain makaba, Roxy, Popolipo, maitre Ficare, alexis Azulino, fera gola, pitou, etc. None of Kimbangu's solos have come close these giants of congo. Good guitarists from congo played for many artists, it has nothing to do with manners, it is about maximising your profit as an artist. Hence, Japonais was called by many artists such as awilo, not because his manners are bad but he was in demand more than Kapaya.
Though none can come close to Dally Kimoko and Diblo Dibala

Kimbangu never played more than 5 hits and he ran as soon as Bikorine Makaba arrived to challenge him. So far Bikorine has played better melodies than Kimbangu, example Satellite and Decollage. He can never be better than Japonais.
