Interesting to hear how his interpretation evolves between this- 1987 and the live Carnegie hall 2000 recital. Begrudgingly prefer the Carnegie performance.. Still not sure about the opening measures and the pauses between each mini-phrase- though I see what he's getting at. Pletnev is always his own voice!

Pogorelich blows this out of the water!

+Clint Cropp well, maybe if blowing is your type of thing. Pletnev's is more creative in my opinion

+ADGO Well, even the harshest critic has to admit to enjoying Pogorelich's "deconstruction". Without a doubt you enjoy all of his recent work regarding Chopin Nocturnes, Pletnev's performance of Islamey is quite conventional and doesn't extract the poetry from Balakirev's composition. Pogorelich's recent performances take the piece to a new level and explores every possibility.

+Clint Cropp I like Ivo's Islamey from the early '90s. I don't enjoy all the Nocturne performances I've heard from him, but the one I find really special is 62/2

I listened to Pogorelic, the Carnegie Hall recording, and I am quite satisfied with his Performance. Actually, although he i such a good technician he does not rush and takes his time. Pletnev I would rank second if "comparison" makes sense at all. But honestly my favorite Performance is rendered by Karen Kornienko.

There is also an insane Live version from Kissin, the last section of which simply beggars imagination. Totally different from the wonderful Pogo one, but also very special.
