Because WC mainly attacks 'soft-tissue' and joints to disable or kill. Two scenarios. 1) In the street: im attacked by a guy who wants to kill me. I pac [slap] his arm away with my 'left' and jam my right finger as deep as I can into his eye [soft]. I immediately switch hand position and my finger hand now covers the attackers arm as my left fung-hau crushes his larynx. I drop that hand to cover and use a pivoting right palm to break his neck. Maybe 1-2 seconds. -Who won? MMA frowns on their guys dying. 2) In the ring: RULES prohibit blinding and killing, so.. He throws a right, I pac and now.. I punch. Perhaps my punch isn't too effective on this guy but now he has time.. time he would never have if he's dealing with a finger in his eye.. to follow up. -Listen, will any MMA guy fight a armed samurai? No! BUT, Insert RULES and strip him of his weapon. Now the MMA guy perhaps wins. So obviously.. can't learn sword defense because samurai's suck? Get it?

This is what i call a teacher he doesn't need to punch the lights out of his students to show what a tough guy he is, blow air off his nose like boxers or make angry and mean faces (like this sifu k.brand and many others !!) for you to hear how strong they're gonna hit you !! This is the first time i see Sifu Lam but what he says about the idea beyond the 4 parts of a fight, to me is the essence of our practice and everyone should agree Chi Sao is the soul of WC/WT !! Great guy !!
I wish I was there. I can have a bad day and forget about it. Love the range of Wing Chung. Mr. Lam sounds passionate about the Art. I hope to meet guys like him one day.
i am a huge fan of gary lamb and have trained in wing chun for about 5 years now , i think he brings the most realistic street application out of the art , that being said i have one issue and i see this in all arts , a willing partner throwing perfectly straight punches right arm and right foot stepping forward , this is bull you will never encounter this on the street in the ring or anywhere else , people usually try to latch onto you and throw punches similar to how a pitcher throws a baseball , i would love to see this addressed
This is an old comment, but I came back to this video and was thinking the same. But, I've given this a lot of thought. As a student, you need to learn foundations first. It should be drilled into you so you know exactly what to do at what time, which is why chi sau is so important. Slow = Fast as they say. Even though you're learning with individuals who are attacking with the same thing over and over, you're still getting those movements drilled into your head. They should literally become your default reactions. So, at any given moment, if someone comes at you with a specific movement, you know what to do to counter that movement. Later on, what should become part of your learning repertoire, is including other fighting styles so you know that you can react properly to different movements. That said, I do think real sparring is important. The difficulty with sparring in wing chun is that the art was designed to control and disable your opponent quickly. Putting on gloves means you aren't able to properly use a large portion of techniques you learn. Now you HAVE to rely on punching and maybe kicking. You can't control the situation as you could without the gloves.
First is business, second is illusion, third is madness... Open your eyes, man. This is not a real world... Just a history! With honer to Chinese culture...
There is an old saying in WC: "If you can hit me, I can hit you. Who will be standing?" Treating chi sau as fighting is erroneous. It is just sensitivity, positioning & balance drills. If you want to test ur skills in a fight, then fight. But don't touch someone in chi sau and think it's a fight.
NO, there is no such saying! The idea in wing chun is to be hit WITHOUT being hit back! As usual, ANOTHER FUCKING IMBECILE TALKS who knows NOTHING about REAL wing chun (the traditional)!
Excellent demonstration of both theory and application that's useful for any art to practice! Bravo! Also want to add for those that know nothing about chi sao...its an exercise to help build reaction time, touch sensory perception sensitivity and self-control under fire! In no way does a WC guy expect to chi sao with anyone. Its a tool to help build other necessary attributes...thats all it is!
WOW! this is a great video, most videos i see of sifu lam he did not do lectures just combat, this video showed me the other side of sifu lam, it would be an honor to train under sifu lam and sifu evangelos sometime before i die. LOL!! greeting from wing chun Davao City Philippines, my sifu trained under sifu wan kam leung in finland, our school here is just starting and the only wing chun school in Davao City, Mindanao Philippines.
Masterful - I don’t think I have so far found a master with this level of knowledge and I have trained in so many wing chun systems. What he is saying here is extremely advanced. I fully understand it but this is the first time it’s explained - for example when I started wing chun over 15 years ago it was hard - now it’s so soft - students overstretch themselves and then say wow - you were not there it felt like I was fighting with air - because it’s so soft and fluid now almost like water. Yet I can end the fight whenever I want because I’m always in control even without sight.
One of Lam's students from back in Hong Kong visited our school once and I thought he was a novice. He wasn't able to block my basic punches properly, my arms slid straight through his guard. I actually had to ease up and alter the course of my attacks multiple times to avoid nailing him and his structure collapsed every time I pressured him. It wasn't until 4 or 5 lessons later that I discovered he had been studying for over 7 or 8 years and knew all the standing forms and dummy ones.
You can know all the forms and still suck lol. I have had experiences like this where I trained with a guy who studied the art for years and just sucked at the basics
Who was this student? If he study that long, I'm pretty sure I know him. Also if you're ever in the LA area. Come to his school, ask for Jason. Just know I'm won't be just blocking basic punches.
It was between two practitioners of comparable skill level. The seminar was a teaching seminar held by lam where he was demonstrating Chi Sau, but that is all I know about it. Also, Chi Sau is not a training tool between a Sifu and student. It is one of the central aspects of the system used to train with others and often times is used to to gauge the relative skill of the users. and again, the Chi Sau ended after the first palm strike, which lam took personally for some reason and retaliated
All of you critics out there who are insulting this man, should be ashamed of yourselves. This man is awesome and he is teaching people self-defense. Gary is extremely fast, but this video does him no justice. Talk is cheap!!! I'd like to see you face to face with Sifu Gary.Lam.
Ming Yuen hi i was there before he learn wing chun that guy was the best thaiboxer he win the last Golden coin Championship 1978 in the Final he win 3 fights so he know what fighting is or he can Kill you he is one of the good teacher the Golden coin Championship was in Hongkong
Fighting is all spiritual and we learn to fight so that we don't have to fight. Using force is last resort. All martial arts and fighting forms are equal if we realize that we are all temporal and any form of force can hurt us. Action is action regardless of style. All true fighters and fight enthusiasts respect Gary Lam.
Greatly enjoyed this video. You can tell that he truly enjoys his art and being that father figure teacher to those who truly want to learn. I too want to be a teacher and hopefully I find a sifu in Las Vegas that loves the art and sharing with others like this man.
I have crossed trained in mma, but my main styles were Wingchun when growing up , but for the last 6 years i have been boxing which is my real passion. I will check out your clips when i get a chance , im off to see the avengers now so i shall post my opinion later on.
I dont need to prove anything to myself or to anyone. What works is not the art but the artist. Even a person who knows nothing about MA can fight. Its about reaping great health, sound mind, a strong moral discipline and the developement of your skills thru a lifetime of devotion to practicing your art that truly matters. Besides, we're martial artists, not criminals. So we dont need to fight each other just because of a distasteful trait called "ego".
I enjoyed that immensely. The instruction and insight that Sifu Gary Lam gives in regards to the different levels and many other different aspects makes one wish there were more of him around the world. Such a humble character promoting the art of WC and not himself in comparison to other vids i've seen online. Thank you for the upload!
Elbows are high, and there is reaching, this is directly related to distance between the two partners because no one steps in to crowd the other guy or get behind his 3-9 line. Bodies are tense and jerky in some of the movements, especially for the old guy. That is how i see it relative to our way.
You prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
yeah i just found out about Sifu Lam on youtube and i cant stop watching his videos. I wish I could be there training with him...what a dream that would be
My Sifu Chuck O'neill (Revolution Wing Chun Kung Fu) and my Sigung Nelson Chan (wingchun.ca) both live and teach in the area. They are great at what they do and their Wing Chun is awesome. Sifu Chuck has trained with his Sibok Gary Lam as well.
@TangoLima1 Yes, he touched him to signal the opening, that is how I was taught to practice chi sau, you don't strike anyone with force, you just apply enough pressure to collapse their structure should their form be off. Lam responded by reaching over the guy's bong sau to jab at him, which is countered by a direct strike(which is unsafe to perform on someone thats trying to do quick jabs) And, the strike would have landed on the neck uncontested so in a fight that would be pretty serious.
The best explanation I have heard to describe it is that a teacher can only make you as good as they are at the art they teach. If his cup of knowledge is only half full, he can only fill yours half way and then you are on your own to learn. However, since most practitioners rarely surpass their masters nowadays what happens is that the cup has less in it each time it gets passed down, and the arts are gradually diluted, and many of their secrets lost.
Chi Sau is meant to be a training tool where both users help each other, not a one-sided teaching tool. It is used to apply pressure to your form so that you may locate the gaps in your defenses created either by using muscle, or by having your form be off slightly because both cause openings to be attacked. It is not meant to be an "I hit you or you hit me more" type of contest. Additionally, if your form is poor when doing this you are hurting your students because they will do it wrong.
Sifu Lam, wonderful demonstration of Wing Chun, thank you. I like to learrn Wing Chun, but have not found here a Wing Chun Sifu, that teaches the Chi Sao the same as your video 2012.
I agree with you on that. Over many years I have trained with many masters of WC, but all very different in their training and teaching approaches. I have learnt a great deal, but have never been truly satisfied totally by any. I am not picking and choosing my WC, but the quest for knowledge and understanding is more important than only techniques. WC for some masters is a business, a chance to open schools everywhere to look good, instead of thinking about quality.
Hey does anybody know which of these guys laid the first egg?? Meanwhile in a street near you these guys are out to get you: th-cam.com/video/uoWoSAJj4_M/w-d-xo.html th-cam.com/video/g7gEZ1Ux-ns/w-d-xo.html (His stuff is not about real fighting, see videos and see the difference.)
Neither of them are able to compromise the other's structure and balance. Every single movement in Wing Chun has an appropriate counter or 5 that link together in an endless loop of moves. Controlling their center or applying pressure to them is part of the chess game designed to create an opening that you can hit them with. Ip Chun does manage a few strikes on this other sifu by doing that. You don't have to hit, but that would be like opening a book for reasons other then reading it :)
For the people in this comment section who talk trash. Come to the school and ask for Jason. Know if you do, we "bei mo" "duel" the doors will be locked and chained, and California law of mutual combat will be invoked. This will be bare knuckle, no gear whatsoever. Two will go in a room and only one will come out. The chain will be unlocked once the fighter is unconscious or unable to move. No tapping out. This goes for especially the wing chun school in Switzerland who keeps talking smack. Make sure to ask for Jason for anyone in this comment section who thinks they can come challenge Sifu lam's school.
Hi Sifu Gary Lam, I like the way you teach your students and demos. I think we have the same vision to promote how good Wing Chun is. You are right, some people learn Wing Chun but their Sifu's didn't explain the principle of it. I blame the Sifu not student. Thank you Sifu Lam. As refer to ALIENSG to your comment. In Wing Chun we learn Chi Sau is how to sense our opponent energy, ie. when you and your opponent grabbing each other that is the time you need Chi Sau. I'll try to make video.
No, not true. Sifu Gary is wrong! And of course, you idiots listen to him! It is WAY more important to learn the whole system, then just concentrate on chi sau! Chi sau is just SENSITIVITY TRAINING which ENHANCES your wing chun! Once you know the whole traditional system, chi sau is more akin to the CRUISE CONTROL on your car's steering wheel, which allows you to concentrate on other things, like DOING YOUR MAKEUP WHILE DRIVING, READING A MAP WHILE DRIVING, BEING ON THE PHONE, OR EVEN DRINKING OR EATING!!
i read you and ankoku15 and i see through your comments that we might be on the same lineage through your quotes, reminds me of my sifu sayings too. from me respect to any sifu and every man that motivates people, but they are people, we are faulty by design..respect, and hope in our path in life, we'll never need to test your self in a real and life threatening situation...respect guys, the only way to equalize the whole picture...now if you really feel aggressive do it healthy and compete...
i was feeling a little bummed about what i have been learning but i see from this video that i need the stuff im learning so that i can truely control the situation when i need to
Also, one time a student tried that exact same move against our sifu. He was addressing the class and the student thought he had found an opening, but when sifu lost the connection he instinctively hit the guy with a double uppercut and floored him. It was pretty funny to see, and sifu could not stop apologizing. We also practice with the intent to strike among senior students, you could not improve otherwise, but with control you can turn it into a simple light tap and not injure eachother.

I hear you, but I think the art is fine as a base. WC practioners learn forms systematically and practice drills repeatedly, like other arts I am sure. But that is not to say they must be applied the same way. There are many single techniques taught, these are the keys, the basics, that are easy to learn. Chi sau is the connection, the contact, it is used to figure out what to do and when. The combinations in WC are infinite. Every situation is different so one must prepare in as many ways.
@Ankoku15 What you've stated seems a bit conflicted. WC by it nature flows as you've stated. An "obstacle" would not stop your attack, you continue around it. If there is an opening, you go thru so it would should not put you off balance and out of position unless the WC guy has no structure or poor structure to begin with. Kernspecht and Lam seem sloppy but they do have a structure. I have experienced it with my own teacher.
you're entitled to your own view. But unless you beat a WC sifu, your stance is not only debatable, but even haywire. A great grandmaster once said "Truth and mastery cant be fathomed by watching , listening or observing but by a long period of training. People who fail to comprehend this dont deserve to understand anything at all".
According to the bocing training i've had, the hissing is to have the same effect as those small crues if karate or other martial arts, to concentrate and focus you're energy on to your fist. Not everyone does that noise though
Tendon strength, structure in the upper, lower body and as one and range control. There's a few (well, one really) schools that get too close which is not what where a WC man wants to be. Even as early as in the chum kiu, we are taught how to shift a man or ourselves to maintain the trapping range. The ability to do this is best learned in chi sau and gor sau.
@TangoLima1 Evolved into something other then WC? Every move flows into the others in traditional WC so there is never a gap in your defense. There is no transition or recovery move if you happen to miss those moves. So, if your opponent avoids it, you are out of position, off balance, and/or likely to be struck. Keith, is an example of what you can do with a few of the WC principles used properly, but against a skilled opponent that would press an attack, his structure would collapse
@Ankoku15 The stuff about structure, etc, we'll just have to "agree to we disagree". The space and medium does not permit lengthy discussion. I brought up the long pole in regarding remarks about "tradition" and "evolution". The pole form was not there from the beginning, it was added, so it constitutes evolution of the system. The pole is just one of other points. Keep in mind how the art was passed down in the ancient times. So much chances for variations to appear.
@Ankoku15 WingChun is a very simple system but has a very wide interpretation. The art itself has evolved since it's inception. In my school there are circlular movements too, which should be natural as we live in a 3D reality. You have not stated which points in the clip but those in the biujee and dummy level, you learn to break/leave centerlines and build new ones.
@TangoLima1 No, you don't understand, I'm saying there are a few that deviate from WC's center-line theory so it isn't WC. It is real, it is just a tai chi principle. One move I also saw was an aikido take down lock. They look flashier and are pretty easy to execute in conjunction with WC, but they are not Wing Chun
Yeah the pak sau works well. Some wingchun guys use a tansau or a bongsau that turns into a Lapsau which is essentially catching a punch so i was referring to that. Good training :)
respect to all people that are trying to discover their inner self, we should help each other, not pinpoint what we don't like..in the end, don't we train for self defence? why then start the fight with each other? i understand competition and ego is in hour dna, the difficult part is to use them for benefitial reasons..offensive critic is only raising your ego..these are not adressed to anyone spesific but are personal thoughts. excuse my english, ty if you read it..
No i would move my head. Bas shows how to block/cover then wrap an arm not catch it in the air. He refers to this in a clip in regards to the effectiveness of Aikido in Mma. Go to aikido in mma Bas Rutten and check it out.
@Ankoku15 If WC did not evolve, how do you explain the long pole's later incorporation into the system according to the origin legend? Kernspecht and others at his level can do what they do because they have their structure. That is why people who don't have any structure cannot put the advance forms into use.
the stuff you says are really good and deep but the guy chewing the gum during sparring is sublime! in a real dojo that guys would be already out for the day.
The interview by Pierre Berton of Bruce Lee where by Lee utter the often quoted phrase "Be water my friend". You would be able to crash like a tsunami wave or flow around the strength of the opponent like water around an obstacle. Think of the two "extreme" properties of water. That is high level wing chun/wingtsun.

I like his approach so much more than other teachers on YT!
Wonderful! Nothing more to say. Just wonderful!
that man makes it look effortless, a true master & a gentleman, this comes across in this short video
I wish I was there. I can have a bad day and forget about it. Love the range of Wing Chung. Mr. Lam sounds passionate about the Art. I hope to meet guys like him one day.
i am a huge fan of gary lamb and have trained in wing chun for about 5 years now , i think he brings the most realistic street application out of the art , that being said i have one issue and i see this in all arts , a willing partner throwing perfectly straight punches right arm and right foot stepping forward , this is bull you will never encounter this on the street in the ring or anywhere else , people usually try to latch onto you and throw punches similar to how a pitcher throws a baseball , i would love to see this addressed
the most effective technique against street fighting is to run as much as you can.
Yes my sir. But like me you have not gotten good enough to play.
If this is true, perhaps you should look into the Duncan Leung lineage. Hooks, overhands, and upper-cuts are literally pounded into your repertoire.
You can't control the situation as you could without the gloves.
we are very proud that we belong to this family .many thanks for this knowledge from hellas!!
This was great, thank you Sifu Lam
Sifu gary lam is the coolest teacher. I like his attitude while he's teaching.
First is courage, second is power, third is skill
First is business, second is illusion, third is madness...
Open your eyes, man. This is not a real world... Just a history!
With honer to Chinese culture...
Go take his classes, you not even scratching the surface.
Obviously, you don't understand Chi sau.
U think in real fight or street fight has opportunity to Chi Sao, Tan Sao, ? Lol 😂.
@@mightymeatmonsta ol'mightymeatballs talking shit again. As usual.
@@algail44 in someone situation it's possible...
I am student of sifu evangelos vasilakis(he is student of gary lam).I told you only this . GRANDMASTER GARY LAM is a LEGEND .
So happy that a sifu like u is beeing on our world :)
I feel sad not to be a student in this master class of Wing Chun under the great Sifu Lam 🙏
WOW! this is a great video, most videos i see of sifu lam he did not do lectures just combat, this video showed me the other side of sifu lam, it would be an honor to train under sifu lam and sifu evangelos sometime before i die. LOL!! greeting from wing chun Davao City Philippines, my sifu trained under sifu wan kam leung in finland, our school here is just starting and the only wing chun school in Davao City, Mindanao Philippines.
Thanks for sharing! Have an awesome day!
Sifu Gary Lam is very generous in his teaching and explanations. A great way to learn some dynamite Wing Chun !
Currently training with gary lam i think his way of teaching is the best
Masterful - I don’t think I have so far found a master with this level of knowledge and I have trained in so many wing chun systems.
What he is saying here is extremely advanced. I fully understand it but this is the first time it’s explained - for example when I started wing chun over 15 years ago it was hard - now it’s so soft - students overstretch themselves and then say wow - you were not there it felt like I was fighting with air - because it’s so soft and fluid now almost like water. Yet I can end the fight whenever I want because I’m always in control even without sight.
i went and learnt wing chun and brought a couple of his books = really good stuff !
Gary Lam is a great teacher. Thank you so much !
DUMB FUCK!!! Hes a charlatan
Yes
Good questions asked about chi sao and grappling.
Michael Metzler Sr I would knock him out
Ming Yuen
Definitely, with your keyboard.
Ahahaha...
Ming Yuen LOL !
Ming Yuen hi i was there before he learn wing chun that guy was the best thaiboxer he win the last Golden coin Championship 1978 in the Final he win 3 fights so he know what fighting is or he can Kill you he is one of the good teacher the Golden coin Championship was in Hongkong
Great philosophy with this Sifu! Amazing
Sifu has perfect techic. Like my sifu but he is real very talented and teaching well. When i watch his videos i remind old times
Awesome sifu. I wish I could train with him one day
Elbows are high, and there is reaching, this is directly related to distance between the two partners because no one steps in to crowd the other guy or get behind his 3-9 line. Bodies are tense and jerky in some of the movements, especially for the old guy. That is how i see it relative to our way.
Love, love, love Gary Lam. Amazing teacher... and a heck of a nice guy, too! Congratulations to him on his new school location!
You prolly dont give a shit but does anybody know a method to log back into an instagram account?
I was stupid lost the account password. I would love any help you can offer me!
@Bridger Houston Instablaster =)
that looks like a very nice kung fu school with a great sifu and good students. If I was in LA I would love to learn wing chun with them.
yeah i just found out about Sifu Lam on youtube and i cant stop watching his videos. I wish I could be there training with him...what a dream that would be
I'm always interested in learning. But thank-you for your time in the discussions. I could be stubborn at times, but I don't mean to be overbearing.
Lam responded by reaching over the guy's bong sau to jab at him, which is countered by a direct strike(which is unsafe to perform on someone thats trying to do quick jabs)
And, the strike would have landed on the neck uncontested so in a fight that would be pretty serious.
What a great sifu! My best regards from Greece sifu Lam!
Gary Lam is a great sifu!!! Hope meet him someday!!!
Great video ... Sifu Gary Lam makes it look easy, but it must be too many years of practice !!!
one of the best sifu i have saw great job
This guy knows his stuff.
+Thomas Young and the bad part about it is they think that this man is a joke he'll light that ass up!
Hey does anybody know which of these guys laid the first egg??
Meanwhile in a street near you these guys are out to get you:
th-cam.com/video/uoWoSAJj4_M/w-d-xo.html
th-cam.com/video/g7gEZ1Ux-ns/w-d-xo.html
(His stuff is not about real fighting, see videos and see the difference.)
Make sure to ask for Jason for anyone in this comment section who thinks they can come challenge Sifu lam's school.
some very good insight. wisdom from a master.
Gary Lam is a man in his mid 60s...Even up to 20 years ago he was a deadly fighter of the highest calibre!
Excellent teacher with real skills and knowledge !
I love this Wing Chun art . I want to learn this but the only school in my area does only 1 class a week .
Actually, even though I am not his student. He is most likely the best wing chun teacher in the world!
The lack of respect leaves much to be desired. Everything eventually succumbs to age and time but the legacy of greatness far outlives us.
very well said Sifu Gary...Wing Chun is a great style and without chi sao is like having a car but not knowing how to drive it...Ja Guide bro
No, not true. Sifu Gary is wrong! And of course, you idiots listen to him! It is WAY more important to learn the whole system, then just concentrate on chi sau! Chi sau is just SENSITIVITY TRAINING which ENHANCES your wing chun! Once you know the whole traditional system, chi sau is more akin to the CRUISE CONTROL on your car's steering wheel, which allows you to concentrate on other things, like DOING YOUR MAKEUP WHILE DRIVING, READING A MAP WHILE DRIVING, BEING ON THE PHONE, OR EVEN DRINKING OR EATING!!
i read you and ankoku15 and i see through your comments that we might be on the same lineage through your quotes, reminds me of my sifu sayings too. from me respect to any sifu and every man that motivates people, but they are people, we are faulty by design..respect, and hope in our path in life, we'll never need to test your self in a real and life threatening situation...respect guys, the only way to equalize the whole picture...now if you really feel aggressive do it healthy and compete...
i was feeling a little bummed about what i have been learning but i see from this video that i need the stuff im learning so that i can truely control the situation when i need to
Amazing video, i'm so proud that you be my Sigung! : )
Most important for people who don't know much about wing chun is at 10:50 till the end.
At last someone who makes sense! Way to go Sammo!
Funny i trained for 6 years. How long have you been training?
Admire your skill Master Lam.

What a legend
Gary Lam is power👍☯️
As a martial art trainer, this Master is great and he knows real kungfu!
Thanks for sharing .. Great video.
