      I planned on going the officer route but I didn’t submit my package in time and apparently they select PAOs once a year. Since I didn’t feel like waiting a whole year I’m doing enlisted as an MC and plan on applying after I rank up a bit more

    Great Video! But one important thing about when he said you can go enlisted and then get your degree later and then become an officer: Some officer positions are restricted by age. Example: To be a Surface Warfare Officer or Submarine Warfare Officer, you cannot be older than your 29th birthday by the time you earn your commission. Yes, waivers exist if you're past that age but there's no guarantee you'll get one. So if you plan on enlisting then going to college and becoming an officer, make sure you've got a solid game plan/timeline in mind because the enlistment contract + 4 year-degree + officer application process + commissioning program can add those years up past the maximum age.

    Hey Nicky, I hope to hear from you soon. I have a Bachelor's degree, scored a 73 on the pre-ASVAB and spoke with a Navy officer recruiter about joining as an officer and he suggested I become a pilot which I never considered before but love the idea now. The question I have is would I sign as an officer and go directly to OCS in Rhode Island or would I have to sign, attend boot camp, then go to OCS? I am unsure after my own Google research but from what I can gather, it seems only in the Army do officers go to basic alongside enlisted.

    I've had several friends take advantage of the Green to Gold Program or going enlisted to Officer, Navy calls then Mustangs I think. They all said being an Officer was waaaay easier than Enlisted. They got a lot more respect than the other officers for being enlisted first, unless they let it "go to their heads" as it were. Also for ROTC they have a "college program" where you attend ROTC but you pay for the first year or two and if they like your progress will usually give you a scholarship for your last 2-3 years.

    • @NICKYMGTV
      @NICKYMGTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, what they said is true. Being officer isn't easier as I have realized there are pluses and minuses to everything.

  • @Midnighht

    I actually know several people in my dep pool in their late 20s including myself who have four year degrees and decided to go enlisted. I would like to see a follow up video regarding enlisted to officer options. From what I was told you need to be E-5 and have a degree but I was told that going this route is a mistake because its tougher to get picked instead of going straight after college is that true? I do not regret going enlisted over officer because I got a pretty sick job that I would not otherwise of gotten with my current 4 year degree. I do hope if I end up liking the military it not as hard as some people have told me to commission in.

    • @NICKYMGTV
      @NICKYMGTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      M! So if you wanted to commission as a line officer you could apply at your first command no problem. However if you want a specific program sometimes they require you to be E5. I would need more info on what type of officer to get you the instruction so you can prepare. Being enlisted is a great path and has a lot of great benefits as well.

    • @Midnighht
      @Midnighht 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The thing is I was not entirely sure. This was one out of the several reasons why I went enlisted. I got a degree in marketing and was not passionate about so I did not want to make the same mistake picking a job as an officer to end up being in charge of people and hating the rate I picked. As of now I using the military to further my education and figure out my true passions. I was leaning towards one of the more oceanographer officer but I do not have the proper degree. I picked AG as enlisted so if I end up staying in after my 4 yr mark I may go this route or an officer job related to mass com specialist if that exist.

      @southernfried87 "Choice is clear" do you know me personally or something? I stated in my previous comments with nicky why I went enlisted. I think you should watch nicky video again from start to finish you failed to see the bigger picture. For me personally enlisted was the best choice for me to make. There is more than one way to be successful. and no I am not "flushing away my college degree" lol I strongly disagree. How about you go through the process yourself instead of telling people what they should and should not do.

    I couple things. Enlisted people CAN live off base. If they are married they are automatically entitled to a housing allowance at the dependent rate. If they are single (below E-7) they can request it and it's at the digression of the CO. Normally E-4 over four up to E-6 will be approved (but it's still up to the CO). E-7 and above can elect. Plus these days many shipboard personnel who don't live off base are able to get a barracks room. And the laundry thing. I don't remember ever having to do my own laundry. There was an appointed person in each enlisted birthing compartment who would take laundry down. It was still up the individual to fold their own stuff and put it away.

      Deployments are more common and frequent for regular active duty which is nice for travel and things like that. The other thing is the advancement for both are different. Looking for a better family life I would do FTS, but you get a better overall experience through active duty in my opinion.

    I joined the Navy in 2008, went to Boot Camp in 2009 and got out as a GM2 in 2013. I took a year off and now will graduate with a bachelors degree this year (2017). I'm going to apply for OCS 6 mos out from graduation. It really is a long tough process for the prior enlisted but I honestly think it's worth it. I don't know if I'll get picked up, but from what I know, and from what I've been told, prior enlisted have a pretty good chance of being selected. RE Code 1 is required.

Also, YOU would be the best person for this, PLEASE talk about new potential recruits looking at the QUOTAS. There is nothing worse than joining the service and learning that their new rate is locked up. This is very important for young people looking to join the Navy. No One wants to stay a Seaman or a 3rd Class for forever. Quotas and advancement chances are really important to everyone in the Navy!!! -Best, Julian

      Harold J. It's called commissioning as an officer but I understand the lingo mess up. Or they could offer you another officer route.

      @johnpennacchio1176 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not typically. It can happen, but it is rare. The current branch has to be willing to release you after investing time and money into your training. Specific reasons are because of an overmanning in your expected Officer role. If you aren't currently on the scholarship, it is an easier transition; as in you're a part of the AFROTC but haven't been accepted to the scholarship program-they're not paying for college. If you violate a scholarship program of one branch in an effort to join another branch, it is unlikely the other branch will be forgiving. One Team, One Fight.

    I'm looking to go HM- 8404, currently at CSU Chico getting my degree in nursing. Anything you can suggest or tell me? To my understanding, your a corpsman yourself. I'm not sure if I want to go greenside or blueside yet, but I have time to think about that still.

    • @NICKYMGTV
      @NICKYMGTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you're going to be a nurse. Why not just commission as an RN, and then work directly with corpsman daily, get paid more, and have more responsibility.

    • @GhilliedOne
      @GhilliedOne 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Being solely a nurse doesn't fully pique my interest as much as the career content itself. I figured serving in our Navy as a corpsman was much more suited towards such interests. Would the degree apply within this occupation (in regards to rank and extra leadership duties)? To my understanding, you're working to become an officer as well.

    • @GhilliedOne
      @GhilliedOne 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rich 91 my plans have since changed. While I had gone into pursuing the navy nurse corps, either by means of scholarship or direct ascension after 1y of experience, I had fallen in love with my plan B choice and decided to pursue a career locally. CRNA school can only be achieved following graduation with an RN BSN. I then came to realize how dull that career choice can be. My interest has since focused on completing my degree and focusing on critical care nursing either in the ED or ICU. I graduate with my BSN this December.

    Why is there such a huge divide between officers and enlisted in the Navy?
    In the Army, it's the exact opposite. It's seen as pompous and poor leadership to separate yourself from your men... enlisted always eat first (the lower the rank, the sooner you eat), they share the same dining facility and lines, officers regularly interact with enlisted, officers respect input from enlisted NCO's, and just seem to blend in with the enlisted in general.
    The basics are there, sure... higher pay, better living conditions deployed etc. but that's about it.
    Is there something historical, or just Navy culture, that set this divide as a precedent?
    Just curious.

    Ummm, you spoke of the "benefits".... ???? But what failed to hear that is above all the most important aspect of rank, as an Enlisted Sailor, or a Commissioned Officer in the Navy. ....LEADERSHIP !! As an Officer, your primary responsibility is the Leadership of your Sailors. From day one. As you "advance" in rank, by commission, so does your responsibility, expectations, level of authority, and level of command. Those are the key points of "being" a Commissioned Officer in the Navy. Enlisted, you make up the work force in the Navy and get the job done. As you advance in rank, so does your privilege, abilities, responsibility, experience and knowledge, expectations and yes leadership authority. You DO NOT HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL YOU BECOME A CHIEF TO BE IN CHARGE. Enlisted Sailors, as you advance in rank gain leadership authority b and responsibility over those who are jr. in rank to them. As your rank advances, you are also responsible to provide Leadership advice and yes perhaps training, or better yet, "guidance" to the Officers in your command, because you have far more experience than they do. As an enlisted Sailor, you are, and have a more direct line, responsible for welfare of your Sailors. Again as you advance, you have more input at a higher level of command. Bottom line, LEADERSHIP, and the level of ability to take care of your Sailors is the key to rank. Be it as a commissioned officer, or enlisted.
