A few errors and omission here and there. But as a 737 pilot, that's allowed ;-). Thanks for showing her and for the accurate review. You've only scratched the surface of all the hidden little things. With regards to the G/S capture, it was a combination of the steep turn past the LOC as you slowed down. The A/P tried to compensate by adding trim (using the slow alternate trim system). It could not keep up and it tried telling you that by turning ON the "AP Trim" advisory light on the FMA. Meaning the AP can't trim fast enough for the configuration change. Because of that it could no longer keep 5,300 feet. After rolling out, it immediately recaptured the altitude. In the process it captured the G/S. Now all of a sudden it needs to trim back down. The sequence proved a bit too much for the autopilot.
@737NG Driver - that approach was 'spot on' for 1999 Alitalia from my personal experience! 🙂 I feel compelled to share this with you all - I flew from LIML to LIRF - during 1999 as a passenger I did 72 flights in 6 months as part of my job. Anyway - I boarded at Linate via a bus and entered the MD80 something (not sure which version) via the back stairs past the engines. We set off to Fiumacino - I think flight was about 40ish minutes, CRZ altitude was 20K+ish feet (not sure as nothing came from cockpit) - it was a rushed affair. Anyway - we started to descend (and we were slightly off mainland over the sea - I've checked Navigraph and can't see that route maybe old) - plane descended incredibly fast, and the thrust was not reduced, as I was sat near the back I heard the engines clearly were increasing in speed. Ears started to pop. After a few minutes of this incredible descent rate the engines throttled back and speed brakes came out at full detent. At same time the landing gear came out! - then we did somewhere between a 30 to 40 degree bank (speed brakes still out). AND.... the flaps started coming out (speed brakes still out)! The video clearly shows the MadDog can have flaps out at very high speeds. I think once flaps extended beyond so far the speed brakes were stowed (as necessary). We approached LIRF, and I reckon around 30-40 feet throttles were killed, and the plane sank - I've never hit the ground so hard! - the plane bounced, right wing dipped and we hit the ground again, then full reverse thrust. It was something to tell folks about to be sure, 24 years on!
Ahh, this takes one back to flying many Delta MD flights back in the 80s and 90s. I must admit, even though I was working towards my PPL at the time it always somewhat amazed that a plane that long with the wings that far back could actually stay in the air! And did they ever - climbing out in a DC/MD was always a rocket ship ride! Also, in comparison with today’s airliners, doesn’t the Maddog’s cockpit look a bit like something some fourth-graders assembled from spare parts they scrounged at the junkyard? Maybe just a little?
I have more than 1200 hours in real MD83 cockpit as flight dispatcher and been on the controls. Love the Maddog X as well. The only thing that isn't working as in the real one is ALT CAP mode, that goes to ALT HLD mode way before reaching that ALT. In the real plane, as long as there is VS capturing the altitude, the ALT CAP mode keep engaged and ALT HLD mode is activated at the same time VS goes to zero. Procedures in the real one are bit different, but I undestand you have a 37 rating so it is OK. For example, it is good practice before putting the APU or EXT PWR assuming power to check its voltage and frequency, as turn the pos light always when the plane is awake and so on. The cockpit is really quiet in reality, due to the aft position of the engines, once you close the door. Wind noise is the main character of the play.
Engines only make a minority of the sounds, other effects like air conditioning, cooling fans, wind noises, etc. are surely there in an MD-80 as well. For example in the 737 the engines are hardly audible in the cockpit, yet it's somewhere around 70-75dB in the cockpit in cruise. There are hundrets of cockpit videos from them available here on youtube and while they surely aren't good enough to tell how it sounds exactly they are absolutely good enough to give you an idea of what's going on inside that cockpit.
It’s a really bad excuse to use that you can’t hear them from the cockpit. The sounds are bad and the mixing is bad. You can move all the way to the rear of the aircraft and the engine volume is still very low. The need to fix the sounds. It’s been an issue since it’s initial development. There is no reason we should need a 3rd party sound pack for the most expensive plane in msfs.
@@FlatOutMatt one has absolutely nothing to do with each other. The bottom line is the sound of the product is bad. If you can’t agree with that then you’re just a fan boy and that’s ok. That doesn’t mean the developer shouldn’t be criticized for putting out a product that is below standards in some aspects.
They really need to update that textures. I know it is not the most important thing. But the higher the price, the more attention to detail will be required. And that is a expensive addon. Amazing? Sure. Worth every penny? Sure!! But expensive? Hell yeah. If Fenix, PMDG and others can do it at a lower price point, so can Leonardo at his higher price.
@737NG Driver You mentioned that the Simbrief downloader is needed, this has been changed last year with an update and the EFB can download de latest Simbrief with the MDClient that runs outside the simulator. This will also handle the route that you can import in the FMS with company route.
I had the Leonardo Maddog for FSX and now the new versions for P3d. The MaddogX 82/82/88 have replaced the PMDG lineup as my favorite aircraft. I can't comment on the MSFS version, since I am still using P3d.
It’s a bit like with the CRJ (hardcore fan there also) In a way 1 model is enough, but I own all 4 ! Not much difference, range and number of PAX, that’s all. Just nice to have them all :)
Yeah, that's Asobo's fault. My understanding is that MSFS's code related to weather is particularly difficult to work with, meaning that almost no add-on has weather radar available.
I don't know what is it with the Maddog, I bet it wasn't even that pleasurable to fly one, but I just love that cockpit, I can't help it. The amazing, detailed modeling of systems also most likely plays a huge role when it comes to my feelings for this addon lol
So true. My favorite time period in aviation. As far as the plane itself, I’ve read on forums and seen on other videos and heard from old MD80 pilots that they loved flying the MD80. It was a quirky plane but proved to be a very robust and safe airframe and it was a hit for the pilots. Plus, what aviation nerd doesn’t love those screaming JT8D’s on takeoff!
I have flown on ASA MD83s on multiple occasions back in the day. On one instance, I was lucky enough to sit in row 2. I can confirm you can barely hear the engines from that position, even during takeoff the noise is exponentially less then an under wing airplane. So, I believe the quiet engine sounds in the flight deck on this sim are accurate and not the result of Leonardo adding "sound canceling headsets". Next time you fly this airplane, go to the instruments camera presets and cycle through each cabin seat. It gives a good demonstration of how the engine noise falls off as you move FWD in the cabin. From my memory of sitting in various rows, this is a good representation. Video evidence... if anything the boundary layer noise is lacking th-cam.com/video/DQFbZ8eFAcc/w-d-xo.html
The most expensive addon you can buy, running the most epic converters of Jet Fuel into noise (JT8D) and they give you a deathly silent cockpit. Well reviewed. Like you say, it is what it is. I will not be giving this a second look.
No, in fact not at all. ANR works by filtering out constant noises like wind or engine sound or avionics cooling. Something pitched and repetitive but with pauses in between, like the vibrator, is indeed not filtered out and indeed stands out when using an ANR headset. Guess why so many people simply pull the vibrators C/B in the 737.
Hi Emmanuel! Looks like you ran into the Maddog's quirky autopilot... From testing, I am convinced the autopilot under-controls the airplane at low speeds, with familiar symptoms being: -Losing the glideslope at low speed in windy conditions, up to one half a dot. -Overshooting the glideslope while at minimum maneuvering speed. -Frequent retrimming of the aircraft while in altitude hold -Loss of altitude in high bank turns I've responded to these behaviors with the following "procedures": -When maneuvering, check the airspeed, aircraft pitch, and the current pitch trim. If the airspeed is dead on maneuvering speed, if the aircraft pitch is greater than 5 degrees, or if the trim is almost fully aft, it is likely the autopilot will struggle to hold altitude in an aggressive turn. Correct with ~10kn added to maneuvering speed, usually 190 knots at 0/ETX. These observations, and my attempts to correct around them, are merely the result of my amateurish experimentation; thinking I will try to get ahold of an MD-80 POH to look into this more. I would say about half of my approaches are just fine, the other half feature some flaws, and I can recall a few instances where I went around in IMC due to g/s deviation. Edit: Saw Sam Coat's comment, makes sense; A/P trim compensates for speed but is too slow to adjust for rapid changes in AOA. Seems solution is to reduce AOA by incr. airspeed or descending through the turn.
737, lovely video! Not the biggest fan of these planes. But as a Dutchie… i can’t wait for the Fokker to be released! Really loved that plane in a KLM livery. Have you heard any update on the MSFS flytampa Amsterdam scenery?
This thing still can’t capture an ILS properly. Between the poor intercept capabilities and dodgy flight dynamics, it’s just not enjoyable. I find it hard to believe you can’t bank on final without heavy input that essentially makes for no practical correction.
It is pilot induced what happened with you on approach. This bird's autopilot is not the kind of 737, MD80 requires more surgical operation of speeds and prediction. AS well as speed management. If you want to check how to get better with this awesome aircaft check out YT channel called "Haitiano1982", it's full of cockpit videos of MD80.
Is there a way to disable the copilot? If its not possible , it would make me so mad 😂. The entire aircraft is a pleasure to look at and then this copilot destroys everything completely. For me its a reason to not buy that thing.
@@A330Driver Nope I mean from outside, JT8Ds are LOUD in real life but Leonardo sounds so gentle and muffled. Also in the real MD80 you can usually see a trail of dirty exhaust behind
