Yes they are deadly and they can go south just as quickly.The area to get the arrow in is so small, compared to the boiler room, that it is not worth the risk. A broadside shot is the most effective and ethical shot to take (my opinion from over 50 elk and 12 deer harvested) and none were frontal shots. I have passed on frontal shots - not that I could not make it but it is the rule of thumb I have always stuck by - same with all my hunting friends. You don't have to punch the tag that a risky shot is taken by a hunter. and the animal suffers. Its OK to have a great time hunting with fiends and go home with tag soup.
I completely agree that you don’t have to punch the tag to enjoy hunting. I also don’t advocate taking risky shots. A frontal shot places all of the vital organs in the path of the arrow. I have taken Many whitetail With this shot and I have yet to lose one with it. It is a great shot to take when you’re on the ground and within 15 yards. It’s no more risky than any other shot. Excellent hunt for a new "Hunter" - practice pays off at the range and I really appreciate the fact that even though the bull was hit you kept shooting until he was on the ground. The elk died quickly and everything was ethical in the hunt. We need more of these hunts. On the first hunt that is integrity to punch your tag on a bull you know was dead and you could not find him. I would and have done the same on a deer I shot and never recovered. Again congrats on an excellent hunt
Kudo's for punching your tag. If you bowhunt long enough you will eventually encounter a situation like this and it takes some character to own it and do the right thing in my opinion. Also, that was awesome to see you take your kid out and watch him get a bull. He did great following up and shooting until the bull was on the ground. So cool to see the next generation of hunters getting out and learning a healthy addiction.

I respect your decision to not shoot a frontal shot its dicey. I shot a moose at 12 yards last year got 40+ inches of penetration. Right throught the heart, liver and stomach. Well done to the young hunter! Cheers
@@outdoors3654 If you shoot a heavy arrow and a good cut on contact broadhead you will have no issues with penetration on that shot. You need to know where to place it, keep it short range so they can't jump the string, and match your equipment to the prey. I've never had to blood trail on a frontal because they have all died within sight. But it your not comfortable with it or haven't done your homework it's best to not take it.

Great hunt! It hurts to loose an animal but if you hunt long enough it will happen. Whomever says “ it’s never happened to them” is either lying or is not very successful on public land hunts... That does not mean take low percentage shots but public land hunting takes an aggressiveness private land shooters don’t have to worry about. The family pets will come back! I say this because I was a hired hand on a ranch and seen how animals act differently.

I must say being an elk hunter in SW Montana, I never thought about elk talking during rifle season in other locations. I just shut it off in my brain lol
Nice bull! After the first shot, poke holes in him until he is down. Glad there are still elk there. Get one while you can. Blow a bugle in western Montana and a wolf will howl more often than not.
Congratulations on a good hunt for the boy, sorry for your luck on the archery bull. What rifle and cartridge did the boy use? Just curious. He did well, kept shooting till the bull was down, even though it might not have been necessary. Looked like he made a good shot, but better safe than sorry.
What an action filled hunt, I would consider that a success in of itself. It would have been a tough call to do the frontal shot if one isn't comfortable with it. Also being at full draw for that long waiting for the bull to take one or two more steps would have been exhausting but heart pounding. I commend you for looking for your shot bull and even though you didn't find him you were ethical and punched your tag regardless. Many hunters would have just went after another one, so it was definitely honorable to do it that way. I would do the same. A BIG congrats to you and Hunter on his first bull and a nice one to boot. He pinned him with his first shot, and was able to put him down quickly with another one. Would be cool if that was the punched tag bull that lived and then Hunter was able to get the RedemptiBull.

Where I screwed up in this situation was that when I came to my feet from a squatting position, I neglected to raise the front of my bow far enough from where I was aiming in the squatted position. The bull was only 5-10 yards away...an EPIC encounter that will haunt me forever since I blew the opportunity! Thanks for watching!

Never shout at a moving bull! Bad call! Very unfortunate you basically killed two bulls and did not retrieve them. One was Moving and one was clearly out of range. I realize you may have looked for them still a very bad situation.

I don't understand how anyone can get on here and talk about the ethics of a frontal shot and how great you are for not taking that shot. That's fine if you're not 100 percent sure don't take it. But to not acknowledge that you just shot as the bull was busting and not question how "ethical" that is blows my mind. Bummer. Down on this one. I think the boy is being taught by someone who passes on a frontal for a running shot, then wounds one on a poor choice. To say you double lung first shot to your son? The look on his face says it. He knew it wasnt a good shot. The double lung comment came four shots later. Good on him for remaining composed. Dad should have known the boys limits and not put him in that position to begin with. Then again, dad shot at a running game animal .... I do understand the reality of hunting. Consistent poor choices, I try to keep out of how I hunt. Just me... Eastman's, I was telling my son how you guys only put good hunters out there. He just finished the first portion of hunters ed and was pretty disappointed with this. I like you guys but this one isnt one to be shared in my opinion.

At 5 yards that arrow will bury all the way in, without a doubt it's a lethal shot.
