  • Watch Sir Antonio Pappano lead NYO-USA in a performance of Richard Strauss’s “Eine Alpensinfonie,“ Op. 64, at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg in 2019.
    NYO-USA 2019 comprised 119 members-ages 16-19 and hailing from 33 US states-who were recognized by Carnegie Hall as some of the finest players in the country following a comprehensive national audition process. In preparation for its performance activities in the New York area and abroad, NYO-USA once again worked with an impressive list of principal players from many of the nation’s top professional orchestras during its training residency.
    Following a return to the Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox, Massachusetts, Sir Antonio Pappano and NYO-USA took the stage Carnegie Hall for the orchestra’s annual concert in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. The program included Strauss’s “Eine Alpensinfonie” and Berlioz’s “Les nuits d’été” featuring renowned mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard. The orchestra then departed to Europe for debut performances as part of the Young Euro Classic series at Konzerthaus Berlin with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená, as well as the Edinburgh International Festival and Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, and a return to the BBC Proms and Royal Concertgebouw Amsterdam with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

    Great performance by the young musicians. I love the peppy tempo, which is much more like Strauss conducted it. Speaking as an old geezer, it's great to see a young generation of players doing justice to this challenging and exciting masterwork.Well done.

    For those who think this performance is too fast: the composer conducted it in 45 min 40 sec (1941), when he was 77 yo. He could have been faster when he was younger. Today's conductors are simply too slow.

      the best time for the alpensinfonie is 50 min for my taste

    • @leestamm3187
      @leestamm3187 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I prefer the Strauss-like tempo used in this performance. I can enjoy it played a bit more slowly, but I personally find anything much over 50 minutes seriously detracts from the energy and gravitas that Strauss intended. I listen often to his 1941 recording as my reference for this piece.

    • @vjekop932
      @vjekop932 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Irrelevant. Strauss didn't care for his music and he conducted it poorly. This is the case with many composers, most famously Tchaikovsky who hated everything he wrote. Most of the time composers have absolutely no idea what they've written and how it should be performed.
