      In the early 1990's AM radio was old technology. Who at the time would ever have guessed that one guy with a talk show on AM radio would have such a massive influence? And it was comical watching people of the unfavorable political party trying to silence this lone voice on AM radio, lol.

      That's what the politicians/media does, with all their propaganda. Like "It's the Russians' fault," etc. And the same thing happens in the east, like "It's the fault of the Americans, of the West," and so on. They make people hate each other! We need to wake up! They did the same with the plan-demic, and they will do the same with any other scheduled crisis, such as the devaluation of money (that paper printed at the behest of some 'tricksters') or the food crisis (which while we are made to hate neighbors, food is destroyed around the world).

We send brotherly greetings for Polish soldiers fighting at hel peninsula, and anybody fighting whatsoever, regardless of the place. Poland is Not Yet Lost! Long Live Poland!" I was living in Poland when we used to listen to Radio Free Europe in winter '81 - '82, when Jaruzelski's tanks were crushing all opposition to the communist party, coal miners in my hometown were getting machine-gunned and innocent people beaten to death on the streets. I wasn't even seven years old, but I still remember how we used to listen to it with our shades drawn - you could go to prison just for listening to it. You have no idea how much it meant to us, that that there is someone in the world who cared, to listen to President Ronald Reagan talking about our people getting killied on the streets. It was like a lifeline, broadcasting hope - it was like hearing a message from the world: "YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!". Today Ukraine is the one under attack and Ukrainians getting killed. They deserve to know the world has not forgotten them.

    Personally, I’ve always said I prefer dials to "smart technology" that always breaks. The real story here is the generosity of the broadcasters and the human connections this enables, including from those who are "not as thankful" about hearing the truth they nevertheless need to hear. I kind of wish the location was not broadcast on this show. That wasn’t necessary for the story, and I hope any Putin infiltrators / actors don’t now try to stop it.

      Surely DeSantis will shut down this radio station because... He'll make up a reason like not enough taxes paid, many people in Africa get their news via SW - unfortunately they are not white, Navajo people used radio to help US soldiers during WW2, unfortunately they are not white, he's not making any financial gain from this radio station, this technology can not exist because it was included in the text books he declared illegal, and shortwave can be used to tell people how to stop the spread of deadly viruses by wearing masks and getting vaccinated.

    Since Ivan the Terrible, Russia has never known democracy, liberty, ethical governance, and the basic freedoms we hold so dear. From Czarist times, Communism and Lenin, the butcher Stalin, through the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of Putin’s kleptocracy, the Russian people have never known moral or ethical leadership, whether from the politicians or the compromised Russian Orthodox Church. The consequence of this is that the Russians have never had a living, positive example of ethical training or development. From the lowest to the highest strata of Russian society, they are bereft of any effective moral compass. What does the future hold? It looks like a very grim future for Russia. How will they change? How will they mature? How will they every enjoy freedom?

      FCC requires all American radio stations to ID themselves at the top of each hour. And the FCC keeps a public database giving the exact coordinates of every radio station's transmitter. This has been true for far longer than WRMI has been on the air.
      Not to mention that finding a 100kW radio transmitter is trivially easy. It's not much harder than finding a lit 100W bulb in a basement.
      If Russia does anything about these transmissions, they'll try to jam them with irritating noise broadcast on the same frequency.

  • @dxace1
    @dxace1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Some comments: It should not be assumed that these programs being re-broadcast by WRMI, or any other U.S. - based shortwave stations doing the same, are actually being heard at sustained listenable levels in the Ukraine/Russia region. That should have been but one obvious question to be asked by the reporter in this piece. Second -- WRMI received funds from the now-ended "Shortwaves for Freedom" fundraiser which brought in just over $21,000 to support these re-broadcasts. And while there doesn't appear to be any reason to question how the funds are being spent -- for transmitter electricity costs and labor for example -- there have to date been no questions asked about accountability to those who contributed. Also -- there are generalities in here about "messages" received from Russia and Ukraine but no specifics about how many, a question the reporter could have asked. The entire piece also presumes that the "old technology" is, in fact, working effectively in a way that can provide ongoing information to millions of Russians, when exactly the opposite is the case since there is unlikely to be any revival in the long term of shortwave as a transmission method. Finally, full disclosure should have had the reporter revealing his past employment for VOA, whose program for Ukraine is being plugged here.

      You can get a shortwave receiver radio (we used to have one in the '70's at home) and it doesn't require any sort of licenses at all. Broadcasting and hobby shortwave radio communication does require a license. If you want to be a shortwave hobbyist, you can start with a "no code" Technician license and progress from there, if that's something you want to pursue.

      Shortwave works because many people in that part of the world have a functioning receiver for it - many of which are left over from the Cold War. It's also much easier to conceal a shortwave antenna (which can just be a long piece of wire placed appropriately) than a satellite dish, if you need to do so to avoid political reprisals. And the unique property of shortwave versus other frequencies is that interaction with the ionosphere, so that it can be transmitted from anywhere to anywhere (at least some of the time), rather than having to be fairly local.
      I recently acquired a new shortwave radio so that I could listen to stations like this. So far I've heard the BBC World Service being transmitted from the Vatican, on the other side of Europe - and if I can hear it at that distance, it can certainly be heard in Ukraine and western Russia as well. The tricky part is working out which stations are transmitting on frequencies that will reach you and at what times of day, as few shortwave stations are 24-hour operations.

      Lots of people in the US protested against wars in Vietnam and Iraq and Afghanistan and Syria. Yes the US media is biased and they may overstate Ukrainian successes but US journalists or citizens are not under threat of 15 years prison for calling a war a war. Freedom of information for Russian citizens some of whom are very brave protesting against this war on Ukraine despite the threats against them.

      @@sands7779 как этот ответ относится к тому, что американцы показывают ужасы войны россиянам? Ну так выходите и протестуйте против эскалации войны на Украине, раз вас не сажают.
      С чего бы мне смотреть новости тех, кто наложил на мою страну санкции? Если и был какой-то интерес к западу, так после этого совсем зачах.
