I've heard about a million songs. But I don't recall ever hearing this chord progression before. It's beautiful. Surreal. It hovers on the edge of beautiful grace and sinister violence in the most peculiar way.
It’s very similar to Alpha and Omega by Boards of Canada.
im sure i've heard similar synths in Portal 2 (not that that's a bad thing)

i was genuinely shook when the album started with this, it's one of the most hauntingly atmospheric songs I've heard in a long time, the building synth, guitar, piano, layering is crazy, along with that weird vocal effect and the beautifully regretful lyrics to top it off
This whole album is a treat and so happy that it has a lot of that hauntingly atmosphere to it.

@@andzmilne8087 yes, I'm familiar and there's a whole treasure trove of haunting trippy recordings when you go deep searchingh into b-sides, remixes etc they (he) have out there. Ever seen him do his dj thing under the Atoms for Peace name with Nigel Godrich (I think?) fucking so amazing and fun

Okay, it has now been over a year since A Light For Attracting Attention was released... this song, this fucking opening song for the album, remains, in my opinion, the single greatest piece of new music to be launched into this world in over a decade.. at least. Easily. (IMO!) It's still as mesmerizing to me as it was when I first listened to it. Still has a deep hold on my soul. Still leaves me floored and enchanted,.. after EVERY SINGLE LISTEN. Truly one of a kind. I feel so lucky to be alive during a time that this song exists, and can only hope that if there is a heaven, there is access to headphones and music like this. Thank you Thom, Jonny, Tom S.

I was waiting for the drums to open up at some point. I LOVE it as it is, but imagine somewhere in this song cymbals hi hats and snares coming in. I would have completely lost it!!

@@el3xg373 I do think this song could've been longer to give it more satisfaction to the building synths, but I don't think crashing cymbals and snares would've suited it.

This is the first song on a great album. Some albums you listen to so many times, they become the soundtrack of your lives. This is one of them for me. Others include George Harrison, All Things Must Pass, Bob Dylan, Blood On The Tracks, Elton John Goodbye YellowBrick Road, Springsteen Born to Run, OK Computer and In Rainbows...and so many more.
Signal vs Noise - A simple signal - "We are all the same" - drowned out and confused by all that seductive noise. Brilliant.
Wow. Love this. Great observation. The distraction theme is strong on this album, particularly on A Hairdryer, _"Look at all the pretty lights, look at all the pretty lies,"_ - by the _"blue-eyed fox"_ - the leaders of the free world. I guess _A light for attracting attention_ has many meanings. Such a masterpiece.
When you’re young, you think everyone’s just like you. When you get a little older, you realize everyone has different experiences and lives than you. At some point, you get old enough to finally understand despite everything, we are all the same.
I can’t stop listening to this. I love the message that we are all the same. I don’t feel so much an outsider. It sounds like a dream. I love Thom Yorke’s voice and music. I’ve had this song in my head, on loop, for days. Music affects me in that I’ll feel like crying, I get the shakes, and hear it in dreams. I love and hate how music affects me.

Yep - I can relate - something very pure gets gradually ground down and lost in the fog- in a very seductive and dark way. It's actually pretty tragic - beautiful that someone can articulate it like this. It's genius really.
I just saw them live last night, and DEFINITELY almost cried - so hauntingly beautiful.
The force of that synth that comes in at 3:19 is intense. It feels like it blows the walls off of the sounds surrounding it.
Thom Yorke will always be that guy

This song just builds into something I can’t stop listening to.
Menacing and yet still enlivening and uplifting; relentless and ominous, but still gentle and reassuring. Unique and otherworldly. Simultaneously shrouded in darkness, and yet beaming with intense shining light. This song is everything.

this record is thom's best work and that makes me so fucking stoked.
Since the day this album came out this has been my absolute favourite track out of them all. The slow, unnerving build up with the intense climax then finishing with the aftermath of it all. Fking superb. I can’t help but imagine my own little montage to this track. Please never stop making the most unsettling music

It's fun getting to hear the song in two different ways depending on which downbeat you choose. For the first three listens, I had no idea that I was supposed to be following the bass drum! Even when you're on the right beat, Thom's vocals make you want to realign with the synth on one. Brilliantly done.
that's why there was such confusion when people tried to clap with the rhythm haha (I saw them live...clapping was irritating as hell)

In case anyone's trying to readjust their ear, this is much easier to hear in the live version. I think because Jonny's strumming pattern is more affected, whereas on the album cut it's really just consistent and doesn't signal any stress on the downbeat at all.

@iamtomjonmoon Depends on what happens with The Smile. If they release an LP2, then it takes longer. But if The Smile split up this summer, I don’t think it’s too optimistic to say 2027. Radiohead then have 5 years to write and record songs.

yes! ain't that the truth..saw them in Vienna. I was blown away when they started off with this song...it was absolutely brilliant. I hardly ever felt so elated after a concert.
Saw them live in Lisbon a month ago. I miss the concert, this song, in particular, has stayed with me.
