- The Medieval Peasant Fortress of Saschiz
The peasant fortress that now dominates Saschiz is still a trace of the medieval era. Built on a wooded hill about 2 km from the village hearth, the fortification was built in the fourteenth century to protect the Saschiz inhabitants and other six neighboring communities from invasions that helped to build it. And the fortress is the work of the German community in the area, so it is worth noting the specificity of this place of refuge, as most of the Saxon fortifications were raised around the churches in the center of the settlement.
The works began in 1347, as indicated by an inscription on the wall of the NW of the fortress. Also in the enclosure wall (7 to 9 meters high) were inserted the four corner towers and the two gate, all with surveillance and defense functions. The names of these towers: the Tower of the School, the Tower of the Munition, the Voivode Tower, the Tower of the Priest, the Tower of the Gate and the Guard Tower reflect the good organization of the community. Inside the citadel there is a chapel, of which there is now only a ruin. The only intact track is the 65-meter deep well, which is said to be connected through an underground tunnel between the fortress and the center of Saschiz.
As an architectural style, the fortress belongs to the period of transition from the Romantic to the Gothic style (it is finished in the 14th century), fact confirmed by the roof in a single slope and the firing holes provided with a wooden beam he could rotate in order to make it easier for him to make eyeballs with arrows and arrowheads. However, the technical details are overtaken by the beauty of the ruin that projects its ghostly silhouette among the trees on the side of the access road, inviting travelers to free their imagination among its walls.
