Oh...I just finished the lantern this morning (!!) and then pretty much edited the rest of the day😂 Well, glad I made it. I had wanted to get these uber-tradtional lanterns from China, but that shipping is awful. Then I found out I didn't fully understand weaving and saw this whole other method with a balloon!! Yah, well anyhow, the materials are in the description. It came out really pretty so I'm hoping to use it for Chinese new year too, maybe do an illustrasted one next time (yeah right, I hardly took a breath when I was doing the calligraphy.) Happy mid-autumn festival and Chuseok and any other holiday I'm too ill-informed to know about. Enjoy the video. Stay lovely and kind☺
I’m embarrassed to say I was 3/4 through the video before I realized the effort on adhesive is because regular glue’s not vegan! While you may have lost a few calligraphy subscribers I’m still impressed. :)
I actually had never thought about glue before someone mentionned it to me WHILE I was making the lanterns. I was originally going to use the wheat starch glue anyway because it was an old recipe used in book repair. I thought it was quite fascinating (albeit...eh...just glue) and it along with the mulberry paper naturally went together in terms of restoration. But yes...plant-based☺😂
I really enjoyed this culture piece! The trick to applying washi paper is to cut out long triangles along the top and bottom of the strip of paper (giving the strip "teeth" on the top & bottom). These teeth will lay side-by-side of each other as you apply the paper on the top and bottom of the lantern. We use this technique when making Washi Eggs.

What an interestin departure from your usual fare! It's a lovely thing, beautifully presented; thanks for the tutorial!
Thank you❤ I was researching it for a while and wanted to see how someone at home might make it. So I'm really glad you liked it

Thank you thank you!! I really appreciate that. I want to try painting some for lunar new year, but let's see, hehe.
