Even in Dave Strong's day car salesmen regularly were condemned by the public as the most dishonest tradesmen they dealt with. It's no different today.
First of a series, designed to advise Pontiac dealers and salesmen on the best way to sell their automobiles. Of course, no one figured the recession of 1957 would affect ALL auto sales [7:02].
This is a dealer information film. It is entitled, "Destination: 'Bottom Line'" The title derives from the place on a sales contract where the customer legally signs his name to purchase an automobile. The idea of the film is to help the dealer sell the automobile. The car the dealer will be selling and the customer will hopefully be buying is the Pontiac automobile. The Pontiac, now discontinued, is a division of the General Motors corporation. It is a storied, reliable, and somewhat sporty mid-grade automobile. This more of these Pontiac cars the dealer sells the more money everyone will make from the dealer himself to the custodian at the dealership to the board of directors of the motor company in Detroit, Michigan. The cascading benefits of the sales, extending not incidentally to the purchaser of the automobile, is suggested by the narrator at the end of the film. "The more you help others," he enthuses, "the more you help yourself."
If I had ever handed my prospect a #2 to sign, I would've been fired on the spot. I actually used to present them with a chrome Cross pen in a gift box to try to seal the deal.....and that was for less than the price of a new car.
Postwar male culture: Only men got the credit. The breadwinners. Deal makers. With a crease in their trousers, a clean shave and a shine. An Aqua Velva Man.
the early pontiacs just seemed to grand father-ish..something your grandparents drove ...the 52 to 54 fords seems much sportier ,,by 1955 most cars got better looking..with more sport and flair ..give me a 56 crown vic or 56 mercury montclair and i'm happy
Things changed even more when Semon "Bunkie" Knudsen took over the division...he immortally said "You can sell an old man.a young man's car,, but you can't sell a young man an old man's car"
There were two head men of Pontiac in 1952...Robert Critchfield succeeded Arnold Lenz that year, after Lenz and his wife had an unexpected encounter with a train while out in their Pontiac.
@@DMBall GM tightened those rules in the 60's...supposedly that's why the Caprice was developed--so Chevrolet executives could drive something nicer than an Impala.
There's something fishy about this sale ( 4:29 ). The salesperson is preparing the contract with his right hand, and with a pencil. He then passes the contract to the customer to sign, with the same pencil. He signs it with his left hand. The text of the contract looks very similar to the customer's signature. I'm thinking it's written the same person. Even if it isn't, things can easily be erased and changed. All this "is learned," as the video says. Very sleezy, just how it is today. :/
Hahaha! I remember trying to talk a friend out of rolling (2!!) Prior cars negative equity into a new car, but the excitement got him and he signed! 😬 not even lying, he signed for a 7 year loan for almost 3x the monthly payment of what it would have been had no loss been rolled over, and a couple k put down. I couldn't believe a bank offered the loan. No lie. That was back in 07ish though, and they were tossing loans out to get stuff moving.
Interesting how they portray women back then. If you notice the salesMAN is always talking to the husband and the husband signs the contract. . Everyone was white back then too.

Thanks for sharing another cool classic car film..
The salesman shows the customer a booklet with penciled-in depreciation numbers. Cracked me up!

And no one anticipated Wide-Track and all that followed...making Pontiac the only car worthy of a beautiful genie.
I sold cars for 10 years, some things never change.

Did the customer just sign the contract with a pencil? Thanks for posting!
Style of the 50’s time, manipulating Pontiac salesmen would *never* cheat a mark.

Now Dave's grandson is out at a Caddy dealership, working the four square, squeezing a sucker into an 84 month loan.
Spenser Hawk Sounds like you’ve been there!
Just what I was thinking.
Only 84, what about 96? I really hate buying cars. Fortunately there are a few out there that aren’t snake oil salesmen.

The Lenzes were driving a Buick. No top GM exec would drive a Pontiac, just one cut above the bottom of the barrel, Chevrolet.

At 1:09 looks as if it took ‘more then men’ to build a Pontiac😏😕
