I use both Maya and Blender, but as a 13+ years animator in the game and vfx industry I would never chose Blender for animation. It's definitely got it's advantages in other areas but Maya being an actual animation software is far superior in that regard. Great video!

@@alexas8787 I 100% agree with you. I've got nothing against blender and I do encourage new artists to get started in Blender to see what aspect of the industry they want to focus more on. Blender is great because it allows anyone to get a feel for everything in one single software. As a very experienced animator in the industry I just know that Maya has way more tools and ways to work in. Blender simplifies a lot of workflows and approaches -which is amazing for juniors because Maya has quite a steep learning curve -and even steeper before users are "professionals". That's why simplicity and automation can sometimes be very negative for senior artists who want to dig deep under the hood of the software and really get into the grit and dirt of it. A lot of people who complain about Maya actually don't know how to do or create certain setups because it might be a very advanced process, and therefor believe it's lacking in features. Unreal Engine is also starting to get better and better in animation and I am really impressed with the direction it's going. In my work I use Maya, Blender and Unreal Engine a lot, and they are all amazing softwares in their own way.

As an art director for 15 years, I have to tell you this is like studying medicine, In the same way a medical student has to know the entire anatomy of a body and then specializes in his desired area. Media production is the same, you should be able to know the basics of these softwares. this is your body of work, if you know Blender, you can literally convert all you knowledge to maya in a couple of weeks and then study a little bit more. A few years ago we didn't have UV maps! a couple years ago we didn't have Nanite in unreal engine. evolving technology is part of our work. Just be comfortable taking few hours every week to study. You SHOULD have your expertise area, but you also should know the basics of our industry.

Paying thousands of dollars a year in subscriptions - Maya should be night and day better than Blender. It isn't. That's the problem. The fact that it's close, and that you can do pretty much everything in Maya you can in Blender, yet Maya cost thousands of dollars a year, and you never own the software is mind boggling.

If that was the case, studios would switch to Blender, don't you think, for one, with Blender they wouldn't have to deal with the licenses hassle, why is it that studios are not switching to Blender, is it possible that Blender is not as good as you think?

    • @Sah.4D
      @Sah.4D  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think Blender is good. I think Blender is also slowly being integrated in the industry slowly mostly because of it's modelling capabilities. Overhauling the whole industry for a software would cost them a whole lot of money for that overhaul. I think. School teaches with Maya which would make you employable. Maybe Blender's goal isn't to be the "industry standard"

@@Sah.4D My reply was deleted, again!
The BI goal is to develop a flashy software to attract donations from a community of hobbyists, the BI got more donations during the pandemic, but now it's going down, the problem with free software that relies on donations, is that they develop for their base to get as many donations as possible, and Blender's base is not one of professionals, but one of hobbyists!
As for the industry, Blender doesn't fully support the industry standards, like FBX and USD, both are missing a ton of functionalities, that's one of the reasons the industry doesn't care about Blender!

The reliance on donations is really casing blender alot. But if they were to turn to a subscription model. Innovation would still take a while to happen.
I also think Innovation are happening even though its slow.
Blender being free helps in a way though because it made people who were interested in 3d get into it and later turned into professional.
Yes. Blender seems like a hobbyists software which i think it's the accessibility that caused that..
Yeahh, I agree. FBX and USD fully. I guess you are right about it being flashy because if being industry standards but free..those aspects would have been a targeted innovation

I want to work in an animation studio, and they use maya, which is very famous for its rigging and animation toolset, to work well with maya do I have to learn maya for 3D modeling? Mostly I have to do modeling for assets, and also characters, can everything made in blender be used in maya properly?
Or do I have to learn maya to be integrated with maya animators who do rigging and animate?
I recently learned maya, and I feel that it is very different and feels slower for modeling than blender..but it seems that for more advanced object modeling maya has many features.

No it is not, AI assisted animation is coming to Maya, if it's anything like the one in Houdini, it will rock, you will never get anything like that in Blender, just like you will never get anything like Houdini's KineFX/APEX, which is a new, cutting edge, rigging/animation system, something the BI has been promising for years, but never delivered on, you will never get that level of functionality in Blender, because the Blender Institute just can't afford developers of that calibre, I don't know how much Autodesk pays its developers, but SideFX, the developer of Houdini, pays them as much as 145k a year, plus bonuses, SideFX and Autodesk have the best developers in the industry, and it shows, Blender is very cool, but as time passes, as technologies advance in the world of 3D, Blender will get further and further behind, because the BI just can't afford developers that can keep up with the newest technologies, the truth is that you get what you pay for!

Yeahhh, it might now because Blender wouldn't have that kind of money to splash on developers as compared to Maya.
      145k a year is spicy.
I've been thinking about this too. But what if blender could develop features that are really good before anyone else?
Any software needs money to compete. But I think blender would keep getting better as they develop more tools. They just need to do it faster, and by faster they are gonna need money for that.

And yes, Dreamworks has its own DCC, they also released their render engine, MoonRay, as Open Source, which is a Hydra(USD) delegate (not supported in Blender), Pixar also has its own animation software, called Presto, and of course they use Renderman as their render engine!
