FILM DESCRIPTION:
The dashing, mysterious Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi), after hypnotizing a British soldier, Renfield (Dwight Frye), into his mindless slave, travels to London and takes up residence in an old castle. Soon Dracula begins to wreak havoc, sucking the blood of young women and turning them into vampires. When he sets his sights on Mina (Helen Chandler), the daughter of a prominent doctor, vampire-hunter Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) is enlisted to put a stop to the count's never-ending bloodlust.

one of my favorite all time scenes. No music. No special effects. Just pure dramatic conflict between two main characters. Lugosi and Van Sloan at their finest.
The acting in the eyes and facial expressions to convey the battle of wills is where its at. Incredible.
Very much in the approach of the silent film era, which had ended just three years earlier.
Such a perfect cinematic moment, thanks to Mr. Lugosi and Mr. Van Sloan. A small, but nevertheless epic battle between good and evil.
I'm sure they would be appreciative.

Van Helsing Was The Hero among the universal Monster's
One of the best vampire films, the other being Interview with the Vampire. The vampires depicted in these films are mythological and beautiful and mysterious…
Wonderful, silent acting from great actors and brilliantly defined characters. Of course, they were only 2 or 3 years out of silent movies so they understood what could be communicated without dialogue and knew the techniques to achieve it.
"We didn't need dialogue. We had faces!" - Norma Desmond (in "Sunset Boulevard")
This "talkie" film overlapped with the end of the silent film era. The last silent film was released in 1930 and Dracula starting being shot in 1930 but was released in 1931.

If Jesus had been executed some 1,800 years later, van Helsing would indeed have pulled a gun. Or a guillotine if Jesus had died in France. Strange religion, which chooses execution equipment as symbol… Full sympathy with Lugosi running away, I did the same some 20 years ago.
@@jensrudat4630 Strange? I’d say inspiring. They put Him on a cross to humiliate Him, but He reversed it to become the symbol of His triumph over death, essentially saying to them “Is that (crucifixion) the best you can do?”
@@jensrudat4630 Well, more fool you, then. The cross represents Jesus's self-sacrifice and resurrection, the overcoming of death. "No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord." Jesus said. Jesus's blood and resurrection, meant we could all live eternally, as the Lamb of God, left His throne in heaven, to gather His flock home.

Wonderfully done here ... and then surpassed by a pair of superior actors in Langella and Olivier during the 1979 version. Still, this one's great to watch, too.
I think a few have done it better since, actually. But Lugosi and Van Sloan had nothing to base their depictions on so they were groundbreakers who helped define the genre.

It looks so forced and lame--I guess this was the style circa 1930.
You two just don't get classics. Y'all must think any movie that resorts to cheap jump scares, CGI effects and that Blum House feature is really good.
