    Lightweight vs Full analysis from an owner.... Hope this helps anyone who doesn't have an ebike yet.
    POWER: I rode an SL and it was under powered for my taste. Keep in mind the SL max output is only 35Nm and the Rise is almost twice that at 60Nm. My current Haibike SDuro has the Yamaha from 2017 which I think is 75Nm and even it has more power than what I need on the trail... so, I can accept a little less power in exchange for the stealthy looks and light weight. I think if you're already a mountain biker in descent shape AND you're riding ON TRAIL ONLY - the Rise should be all that you need. By comparison if you're already a FAST rider on trail without an ebike, the SL is likely all you need. FULL POWER ebikes - if you're not a good trail rider now, or have some physical injuries or difficulties, OR, if you want a bike that has power to go 17 to 19 mph on the road without much difficulty, you may want to opt "full power" bike. I can use easily all the extra power of my bike when I'm on the road and I have a steep hill to climb. I've never used full power on the trail since trail riding is just more technical and slow than road riding.
    RANGE: My Haibike has 500wh battery. I can tell you personal experience on the trail, I only use about 1/4 - 1/3 of this capacity per ride. On the trail I tend to ride 1 - 2 hour rides, more than that and my back is killing me. I estimate that I use 100watts of the battery per hour on the trail. Let's assume that I'm pedaling 60% of the time so when i'm pedaling, I get a 150 watt boost which should correlate to a 45Nm boost average. The SL and Rise have plenty of range for trail riding without the battery. Who can ride 5+ hours on the trail (not me)! HOWEVER - on the road, you can use the extra range. I rode 55 miles on my Haibike on the road, and depleted the battery by about 80% by riding between Eco and Std. So... if you want to pull long road rides on your e-bike, that's when the extra range comes into play.
    TO RECAP:
    Get the SL: If you're already a fast trail rider and plan to use the bike on the trail
    Get the Rise: If you're already a fairly strong trail rider and will use the bike mostly for the trail with some road use
    Get a full power bike: If you are just getting back into biking, have some physical difficulties, and / or want a bike that has the power and range for long road rides.
    * Note - price was not a consideration. If you need to hit a price point you'll likely need go with a full power bike and weight will play a smaller part in the decision *

      Thanks for an excellent personal summary! It helps me in my decision making process.
      Here is a concern of mine regarding motors on eMtb:
      - Specialized is having HUGE sales volume, and they are having a "large" number of motor failures. their SL motor has significantly lower power than their turbo (non-SL) motor ... and I think many riders are pushing the motor to it's max limits, and burning the motors out, likely because of repeatedly OVERHEATING the small motor.
      - The Rise has a SIGNIFICANTLY stronger motor (if I understand correctly it is basically a detuned larger motor), and perhaps it is less likely to overheat. I dunno.
      Note that **I do not own either bike, but am a Professional Design Engineer** so, that said:
      - My thoughts are as follows: Bicycle engineers push design limits on their designs, in all areas, due to the NEED for higher performance at a lower weight & lower price. BUT, in 90% of all engineering designs (various engineering disciplines) we build in HUGE MARGINS (called a safety margin even though it rarely has to do with physical safety. Rather Safety margin = Failure margin) to prevent premature failures & a mode of failure we call infant morality. One example is pressure ratings: We would test for zero failures at 4x the rated pressure. This kind of margin is normal in the MOTOR industry. I'm thinking that 15% margin is common in the battery industry (poor heat dissipation being "the" common mode of failure) .. BUT, this is not the thinking of your typical bicycle designer.... they are likely building in a 3% or maybe a 5% "safety margin"
      Specialized simply needs a larger motor if they are going to tune (program) their motors to put out the kind of energy they are specifying
      - BUT, who am I?

    I wonder if the price comparison would have been more even between your SL and the M10 model Rise instead of the M-Team? The M10 is quite a bit cheaper (at least in Canada), and has even better components than the SL for its price.

    Nice review, prob early 2022 I’m looking for my first emtb, mostly for long fireroad climbs, some single track but nothing crazy rough, and plenty 30-40km forest trail touring. I get numb hands and sore wrist and shoulders so need a riser bar and something with some sweep. Big flat wide bars are a nightmare. Do any of these bikes suit a more relaxed riding posture or maybe you know of some. I can always just swap my current bar and stem onto a new emtb!

    • @CatMTBPilot
      @CatMTBPilot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi thanks for the comment! I wouldn’t be too sure about that end of the market for E bikes but I would recommend going for a lighter bike so that you’re putting less stress on the wrists and shoulders. Either of these bikes would be a good option as they are some of the lightest on the market but can still take on the gnarl. Hopefully you get sorted and let me know what you go for!!

    Thx for this, it was a great review and great timing as I had just started exploring the price/ spec differences on the Rise M10 versus the SL.
    It looks like the Orbea might appeal to the less fit or fatter fellas like myself who might be hesitating over the lack of assistance available up the climbs on the SL.
    I've hired an SL a couple of times and couldn't wipe the grin off my face and also ridden a 25 kg Focus which whilst heaps of fun felt like I was descening and jumping a Panzer tank...

    Nicely made video, well done. I’m testing the SL atm and getting the Rise to try next. I really like the way the SL handles, partly due to the reduced weight. I find the standard 34’s a surprise, they are very comfortable over roots and rocks due to their slight give and paired with a DH tyre at the front one can ride most things and not get arm pump, with a nice damped feeling. Makes me think some forks maybe too stiff? The head angle is a bit steeper than what I usually ride but it hasn’t held me back so far. If I bought the bike I would keep the 34’s and fit a spacer under the head tube to slacken a bit.
    Something you didn’t mention I think, is Specialized integration is very good in my opinion, with uncluttered cockpit and neat integration of the motor, possibly better than Orbea. So one point to Specialized, that’s a draw then.

    • @CatMTBPilot

      Thanks so much for the lovely comments! And you are spot on I had that on my list about the display and somehow I missed it when I was putting the audio together! 🤦‍♀️The orbea one isn’t bad but the Specialized is more intuitive. And that’s really interesting about fitting the spacer with the 34s.

    Hello, thanks for the great video. I am thinking about an Orbea M20. I am 90kg, I ride with normal to conservative speeds and ride mostly trails in Luxemburg which has technical parts up and down, and flows sections as well. I do a few enduro trails in the summer and about 8 afternoons on downhill tracks in a bikepark in France. Would this be a suitable option or would it be better to buy a wild fs, rail 7, merida eone forty or eone sixty? I now have a Haibike fullseven 60 from 2018 (with 27.5 wheels, 3” tires and 70nm torque) as my first emtb. Before that I didn’t ride MTB. I would like a bike that is a bit easier to do a bunny hop or small hops/jumps. And also confidence inspiring.
    What option would you in this case take: 140mm or 150mm fork? Or even getting another fork with 160mm?
    Would you change to bigger rotors?

    • @CatMTBPilot
      @CatMTBPilot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The rise is a very capable bike and can ride pretty much anything depending on the riders skill level. It’s a very playful bike and lots of fun and from what you stated above sounds like you’d have a lot of fun on it. The Levo SL is also a really good option, slower up the hills but very capable and fun on the way down. Both bikes can be bunny hopped more easily than say a wild FS or equivalent as they’re so light and agile, basically they feel like an analogue bike with a motor. Best of both worlds!

      Rise has more W has newer cells and more power, SL uses higher voltage. From the reviews I've seen Rise has a considerably higher range, not to mention that the range extender for the Rise is way bigger.

      Well it’s the Levo SL. The back story is Friday after ringing around one dealer had 1 in medium coming in late May, so over the weekend research and videos like yours I rang Monday and to put my money down, but it was already taken, ☹️☹️. Next lot were coming in next year. So Levo SL is was yesterday Monday I got one I had two to choose from Carbon on Black and Cast Berry / black. So Cast Berry is was. A short ride with my co rider and follow Caravaner but was pouring rain 🌧 after 3 weeks of Goldilocks weather not 2 hot 🥵 or 2 cold. But the bottom line is it’s great I have the power turned right down and till has the power for me. Now so bling some oil slick parts. Best wishes from Australia.

    • @CatMTBPilot

      It depends what mode the EP8 is in and how heavy the rider is, there’s a significant difference in the performance if there’s a good weight difference in the riders. But yes it will be less powerful in general.

    My wife is 5’1” and has a small full suspension cannondale neo cujo. The problem is even though the bike is a small it’s still to big. She can’t dab well in the ruff stuff and it is stifling her confidence to ride more technical terrain and grow her skill. Even with the dropper post down she isn’t completely relaxed over the bike. I would like to sell her bike and buy a better one that fits. Do you have any recommendations? It’s tough seeing her try really hard but be limited by a bad bike fit. In our location we don’t have any bike stores with enough inventory to try different bikes so some good info upfront would really help. Thanks

      Hi Brian thanks for the comment! The Specialized Kenevo I test rode was a size S3 and fitted me perfectly and I know there’s a smaller size of an S2 which would maybe suit? I’m 5ft4 and I have shorter legs and the S3 works for me because it has a very low stand over height and I can get my feet down. Also the Scott Contessa Genius E Ride 910 has a low stand over height and is female specific but I haven’t ridden it myself. And I know exactly how she feels as I had the same issue on my old Commencal Meta AM as I couldn’t get my feet completely down either. It massively affects your confidence. I wish her the best of luck and hope that you find her a perfect bike!!

It depends how many times and with what assistance you want to get to the top of that hill i suppose. I’m now riding the Rise as my pre injured shoulder was aching from the heavier Kenevo. Increasing the travel of the fork can solve the issue you named. Alternatively the fork can be tuned by customizing the shimstack or even upgrading the internals. My down country bike has 120mm of travel and feels like 140mm stock after upgrading the internals and customizing the shimstack. But it still canˋt beat my 160mm stock enduro.

    From an owner: had an SL for 20 months (Feb 2020). To me, the perfect e bike. Mind you, I rarely ride in full power mode, so the extra torque on the Rise is not a draw for me. But also keep in mind: the short chainstays on the SL make *all the difference* as playful as an ebike can reasonably be. And it has great sus, fantastic downhill and in tech - I prefer it over my Evil following. Bulletproof, too - no issues except a slow returning dropper after 14 months (be aware of claimed motor issues - these are for the Levo, not the SL, as far as I can tell). With the extender I do 60 mile backcountry rides in 4000 ft + mountains. The only improvement I would look for is a slightly less whiny motor, though I barely notice it now. It will take the same performance but 5 lb lighter still to make me want something else.

    We purchased this Vivi 27.5” electric bike and a Tentaquil 26” electric bike for our 13 and 14 year olds. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxUiL0GnyDjP32RJdd660sP8mZk4CRLTCJ The Vivi was much easier to put together. With the Vivi, there was a video link to assist with assembly which made the process easier to follow (we did put the handlebars on upside down, but it was a quick and easy fix). With the Tentaquil, the assembly was not as simple to follow, but after we messaged the company for an assembly video, it was easier and they did respond quickly. The other major differences were that the Vivi has a grip throttle on the right handle (like a motorcycle) and the Tentaquil has a push throttle that you use your thumb to activate. The monitors were also different, so if you’re looking for something specific in terms of changing the bikes functions, pay attention to what the monitor offers. We were really impressed with the overall quality and functionality of both bikes, but if you’re looking for more power and an easier assembly, definitely go with the Vivi!

    Good review. However, be careful comparing wH when not also factoring in the efficiency of the system. In this case, you are comparing a 48V vs a 36V system. This would have swung +1/-1 in favor of the Levo
    In the real world, I really thought the Orbea with 85nM was the obvious winner. However, when looking at how much they cost, how much I have to spend, and the Spec of those bikes (along with SW/Motor interfaces)... the Levo SL Carbon (not expert) took my money... with the note I have a lot of parts (Code brakes, seat post) that I have to replace. :(

  • @captnhuffy
    @captnhuffy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Thanks for an excellent personal summary! It helps me in my decision making process.
    Here is a concern of mine regarding **motors* on eMtb:
    - Specialized is having HUGE sales volume, and they are having a "large" number of motor failures. their SL motor has significantly lower power than their turbo (non-SL) motor (and lower than the Rise motor too) ... and I am thinking many riders are pushing the motor to it's max limits, and burning the motors out, likely because of REPEATEDLY OVERHEATING the small, under-power motor. Maybe.
    - BUT, this is not the thinking of your typical bicycle designer.... they are likely building in a 3% or maybe a 5% "safety margin" Oops!!!
    Perhaps Specialized simply needs a larger motor if they are going to tune (program) their motors to put out the kind of energy they are claiming (specifying)
    - BUT HEY: who am I?

      @captnhuffy 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dongkapuyawn5107 Yeah. And I ride the Leftist coastal states too. I see what the shops have in stock, here, and will not make that a factor in my choice. I'll just continue to ride my Stumpy til I order what I want... and the more I look and test ride, the less I like the lower power of the SL. There simply are so many rides, sections of trail, that would benefit from higher torque. I'm less concerned with battery life, although that will likely change because eMtn'ing seems to encourage longer rides, more saddle-time, & even doing the same trail a second time because you aren't rung out from the climbs.
      I have taken 11 test rides on eMtnBikes, and the Specialized options are at the top of the list. Sadly I havent had a chance to test ride the Orbea Rise :(( the YT channel the Loam Wolf did a shoot out between these two bikes .....

      Thanks for the comment! Yep I was aware about that, having ridden a couple of e bikes now and having to already replace the shimano motor on the commencal I feel the warranty on the motor itself is very important with e bikes.

      I wish, but everyone’s telling me not to buy out of USA or overseas because of customer support

    • @CatMTBPilot
      @CatMTBPilot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I can see that alright, especially with an e bike. I’ve been very lucky so far with my Kenevo but having Specialized around the corner to call into if anything does go wrong is a big comfort.

    Just my opinion, but an unfair comparison. One of the bikes was the wrong size, and the spec level was not the same. M10 in matching size would have been a closer comparison.

      Thanks Owen, yeah defo see your point alright. These were the two bikes I had to test ride and it’s only my opinion on how they did for me. Loved both of them and anyone lucky enough to be buying one will love them! 😃

      Owen I agree.....The Levo has typically been compared to the RISE M-LTD, which would have made this an apples to apples test. The LTD is actually the lighter of the two. The LTD also has a nice light set of NEXT carbon wheels. That was a heavy RISE she had there. And as for sexiness,,,, the RISE blows the Levo away. Put a blondie on an LTD,,,,, hold me back!!!!!

      Thanks for the comments Jimmy, good points thou the MLTD is a fair increase in cost. I think you said you were getting one in a previous comment. Did it arrive yet?? Hope you’re having a ball on it. 😃

      @@CatMTBPilot Thanks for remembering me Cat,,, I was given the opportunity to change my order for one of RISE's custom bikes. I will need to wait a little longer, as mid May is the delivery date. I'm attempting to attach a pic of my crazy design. Someone would look twice as this bike fly's by them on an uphill climb. Couldn't do it,,, is there a way to send you a pic?

    Hm, the Rise should weigh at least 1 kg less.

    • @CatMTBPilot
      @CatMTBPilot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I think you’re right, the tyre was not the original spec and I think there was some extra tubeless fluid in one of the tyres too so that would defo add to the weight.
