Good morning sir Matt. Enjoying my coffee and watching your video. I do enjoy catching panfish panfish on the fly rod. Will tie a few of these to add to the box. Have a great day and stay safe my friend.
Hi from Kansas City 🎣🌆 Dave I've been a fan of purple and so has My Old fishing buddy. So much so he wouldn't go fishing if he didn't have any purple's. Great job on this fly. Purple and yellow color 's for the royalty's thanks for your time and knowledge good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
LOL,good morning Matt☕️☕️ Well what an honor, we had a good day. And so much fun getting to know you being able to fish together. I will twist this up as soon as I get home! Hopefully this will to put an end of me getting Skunked! 🤣🤣🤣🎣
Ha! I actually had a few seconds saying that in my recording, but I didn't want to rub it in too much so I cut it out. :-) I'm hoping to get out to the Gunpowder on Saturday, so fingers crossed I don't get skunked (like I did both times in February!) And oh yeah, I'm looking forward to my next trip down to Georgia. :-)
@@SavageFlies I usually do ok in NC I saw the same fish rising but no luck. And I tried a little of everything and I mean everything. But I won’t mention what the everything was 🤣🤣🤣 Yes, I can’t wait to get back together! I may even come up your way. I am going out in the morning to try to redeem myself. The bass are coming around now. My buddy was showing me some pictures of his catch today. And I will be heading to North Ga. On Monday where we were. I am heading to Owl town creek. It’s about a two mile stretch of a stock stream. Very easy to navigate for an old man. Right off 52 out of Ellijay heading East. Joyce and the kiddos got a kick out of the video it was fun👍 Stay safe!
That one will do fine, Matt. It was funny listening to you say you use the same "trout flies." For the longest time my "panfish flies" were nothing more than my "rejects" that I was too lazy to cut the materials off and start over.
Love it! I fish a local big creek almost daily just to relax. My go to flies are almost exactly this. I catch perch, small bass and occasionally the small stocked rainbow (those die when water warms soon). I have to say my favorite are small hair or foam topwater beetles, just for the strike! Thanks again! Have a great one Matt! 👍👍🎣
Hey sometimes the simplest patters get you the most fun, this one gives me a great reason to use some of the colors of chenille that I don't use. Thanks Matt
Nice easy fly Matt. I think there are endless combinations for this one. I like marabou for the tails but arctic fox works too. As for the body I can't even begin to think of all the combinations. Keep the good stuff coming Matt.
Oh yeah... this was actually the first time I'd ever used this arctic fox fur. It was really cool stuff. Almost as fluffy and flexible as marabou, but it would have to be tougher. (It felt like it anyway.)
I could have used this fly on my last Brown trout outing - good stuff! I love your fly tying videos because they’re so easy to follow and well explained. Hmmmmm… you tye all the time, I flyfish all the time. Perhaps a future collaboration? ;))
I'd love to Dan! Let's touch base this weekend. I just finished a bonus video for tomorrow and tomorrow night I'll be tying Saturday's fly, but I'll have some time this weekend. matt@savageflies.com
Thanks for sharing this one Matt! I will run to a park pond just down the road from me when I have a couple of hours to play with the panfish. Great fun on a 3wt. Cheers !!
Oh yeah they are Todd. I've been using a 3-wt for 80% of my fishing the last couple of years. I'm just waiting for the day I hook up with a big bass it won't handle. I did have about a four-inch sunfish on the line last summer and a monster bigmouth came up and took a swipe at it. No way I would have landed that thing but it was fun to think about. :-)
Thanks for another great fly Matt. I love your style of videos that show warts and all as I'm new to tying and it helps my confidence to know that not every fly needs to be a piece of art. Don't get me wrong, I really admire those who can tie very artful flies and appreciate the effort that goes into them. But right now, I'm aiming for functional. Perhaps someday I'll gain enough skill to tie those artful flies.
Good morning Matt. Enjoyed the intro and the tying of the fly. When it comes to panfish my go to jig has always been chartreuse and yellow with a pink head (bead). It’s worked well on the perch up here. I’m going to put a few together just because you never know when you’re going to need them. Take care Matt. ☕️time.
I’m constantly amazed that such bright, unnatural colors are so successful. I know the science as to why, but, still. It’s a wonder anyone caught anything before neon chartreuse came around! This is a great, simple fly. Thanks!
Shockingly similar to the euro jig streamer that I saw on Fly Fish Food. Except the one I've used was the on demo's on their channel with purple and black, but either way they do catch trout too! Awesome pattern Matt!
Awesome Matt. Jigs are probably the most versatile all around "lure" going, especially bugger style. We always called that type a Crappie Jig. For Crappie I like silver/white. For Rock bass - they'll aggressively eat most anything - I like yellow shades with a hackle collar, it works on all the other panfish as well as trout. That fine looking jig you tied would certainly take those big "ice out" L. Ontario browns. Thanks, I'll have to try some tied with fox tail hair. 🤓 👍
I hear you Joe! These do look like ice fishing jigs too. Or... the jig hooks you buy at Walmart that already have the beads on them. Remember the ones you just jab a soft rubber chub on? I used to throw those with my ultra-light spinning gear all the time. :-)
@@SavageFlies I still do, but I buy them in bulk, unpainted, at the tackle shop. But I tie on them. Now with all the jig hooks for fly tying and the "balanced" tying for still water has really increased your options. And that's NO April Fool! Today is our traditional trout opener, tight lines all! 😃🎣
This one's gonna be a hoot on the local lake! I've got a bunch of different colors of chenille so I think I'll play with color combos and see what works. Thanks Matt.
You bet John! I've had several packs of it for at least a year now and this was the first time I've used it. But I have to tell you, I agree! It really is some great stuff. :-)
This fly in black with a silver bead is my go-to in the winter, though I tie it in #8 with a 4mm tungsten bead. It was responsible for a 17" wild brown in the Patuxent a few years ago, and numerous fish since then. Also, wrapping into the bend with a marabou tail is a trick to help prevent frequent fouling.
I've heard of some monsters like that in the Patuxent but have never seen one on the end of my line! Someday maybe. I do have a fishing day coming up Saturday-- haven't yet decided if I want to go the Pax or Gunpowder. Or maybe Morgan Run... I haven't been up there since early last spring.
I like panfish. The first fish my son caught as a kid were sunfish in a local park pond. I still enjoy flyfishing for them and tie different flies just for redear, warmouth and bluegill here in Florida.
Cool, easy, attractive and effective. That about covers it. Nice fly Sir. Once you decide on a hook size, the options are endless for this one. Panfish color range is pretty wide. I’m ready but haven’t been on the water yet. Our rivers and trout streams are open now. Still have ice on lakes in places. But getting thinner and disappearing. So the panfish are on the list for sure. Then woke up this morning to a dusting of snow. Great fly and video Matt. Thank you buddy.
I’ve been just waiting for you before I get ready for work! Good morning Matt!! Do think crappie will go for this fly? I want to go after crappie this spring.
Thanks Barbara, and yes, absolutely! If you look up "crappie jig" a lot of them will look very similar to this thing. And I think crappie may be considered panfish anyway. :-)
Hi from Kansas City 🎣🌆 Dave Hughes I use a size 12 fire hole jig hook. For the head a glass bead backed up with wire weight no lead or copper then I'll put a drop of glue. Put a tail on and wrap a body with chiennel or yarn then put a hackle behind the bead. Thanks for your time and knowledge you always have a great video. Good health for you and your's 🎣🤠 Dave Hughes
That artic fox looks great for the tail of a fly that’s going to be hit a lot by those little nibblers. Marabou might get chewed off pretty quickly. Fun stuff.
Time to pop out to Gilbert Run resevpir for some crappie on the fly! I used to slay them there with a craft fur Kreelex and green damsel fly nymphs. Always a few stacker trout too! But my target was crappie. From kayak of course.
Oh yeah, I've taken my kayak out there a few times! But the last time I fished it was late last summer in a float tube. That was a mistake! There is a lot more current in that lake than you would think. It was easy to float from the right to the left, but coming back up I had to go to the bank and walk back. But still, fun times. :-)
I started out with the one you made last year and just started tweaking alittle bit at a time and ended up with a kind of a mixture of that one and this one. Super fun just playing with the design and trying to come up with different patterns and colors to see what the fish will bite.
Nice looking fly Matt I definitely need to do more bass and pan fish fishing I have never wrapped the tail slightly around the hook bend either, Lance Eagan said it will keep the tail from falling around the hook (IDK) Thanks for the video Matt hope you have a great and wonderful weekend with lots of fishing
Yeah I heard that too Dave and I can see that more with marabou but I think this arctic fox might do okay like this. I guess there's only one way to find out. :-)
No kidding Sally! It's been crazy around here lately too. But maybe this weekend when I get a day on the water. I'm hoping for some better weather. :-)
I can't even tell you the number of pan fish and small large mouth I have caught on hopper dropper rigs and on black ants. I have had small bluegill and green sunfish hit size 6-8 hoppers that wouldn't even fit in their mouths.

Kinda like that color combo. This is a very good beginner fly. Quick and easy with a couple of interesting materials. Thanks Matt!
