      @@StoneyAcresGardening I'm on a new property with plenty of space & sun. I've placed a big poplar log at the low end of a slight slope & laid cardboard/mulch/ chicken litter on top. I plan to buy a load of topsoil to place on top. I'm hoping to get pretty good depth & soil as the years go by. I'm in N. Georgia, on clay. Any tips? I've mostly grown flowers in the past but jumping into veggies.

    I’m in zone 7. A local nursery owner always told me not to put tomatoes out until Mother’s Day. So far that has been good advice!

      Just to be clear, the reference to tomatoes was for starting seedlings from seeds indoors, not direct planting.

    I live in zone 7b in southeastern Tennessee our last frost date is suppose to be April 15th but we have has unseasonal snow surprises on some years. The snow usually melts by 10 am but still it's covering the plants. Tomatoes and peppers suffer from blossom drop at temps under 43 degrees. I cover the plants making a nice tent with plastic over and around the cages and add Christmas tree lights to help keep them warm when we know the surprise snow will occur by morning.

    Rick, we’re in zone 7b with a last frost date of May 15th. We live in the high desert of Northern Arizona, and the last frost date is critical for us. We think that paying attention to the “a” and “b” part of the zone designation is super critical, especially for beginners!

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      You are a great example of one of the may flaws in the whole Zone system. We are zone 6b with the exact same frost date as you, in fact I know of many Zone 5's with a May 15 frost date. The USDA zone system gives you a good general idea of what a climate is like, but it has a bunch of flaws. So it is good to not put too much credence to it and instead learn as quickly as possible what local conditions are like. I think the first thing a new gardener needs to learn is their average first and last frost dates. Planting hinges on those dates.

    • @mattkim3949

    I'm near Columbia SC, Zone 8. I had a batch of broccoli sprouts that got moldy about 14th Feb, so I buried them in an outside pot, thinking its a total loss. But now I have 100+ thriving 1" long broccoli shoots. All in a 12" dia pot. How do I get 100 of these in the ground and when would be the best time to do it.

    • @StoneyAcresGardening
      @StoneyAcresGardening  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well you would need to separate them and pot them up. BUT! often the seeds you buy for sprouting are not meant for the garden. Spouting seeds are often (not always) selected for traits that make them good sprouting seeds and may come from varieties that don't really do well in the garden.
      If you are going to try it then in Zone 8 now is the time for planting cool season crops like broccoli.

      USDA Zones are just that. No offense, the United States Department of Agriculture has developed and updated the Zone maps for the U.S. only. I suspect you live in Canada obviously, so just a word of advice would be to find the Canadian version of the USDA zone map and compare it to what he is explaining. Or just best guess here plan on what is a zone 3 or 4 for the majority of the Canadian population. Best of luck.
