    Nice game and nice couple!! Two notes on the rules:
    1. As mentioned from other viewers you dont pass the Grand Master token each round. The Grand Master token stays in the 1st player and if another player plays a GM token gets the assistant token. At the end of the round whoever has the assistant gets the GM token and becomes the 1st player next round. The use of the assistant is necessary so we dont forget who is the 1st player in the current round(more useful in 4 player game).
    2. (14:10) The rules page 10 state that " Each Brush can only paint one Landscape per round(before or after you move it). It doesn't say Lesson Card but Landscape. Landscape=Color(or Theme). So if I have a Brush on yellow i can, in the same round paint multiple Lesson Cards with 1 yellow Landscape.

    I think the cards on the dark spaces of the bamboo board have to be played facedown so that you dont Know exactly what you get. Ah, later in the Video you recognized this :-)

    I'm glad I found your channel, I really like your Playthrough-Videos!!!
    Some additional corrections concerning the rules in your Playthrough:
    1. The Master Pawn (first player token) doesn't switch automatically each round, he only moves at the end of a round if someone grabbed the Assistant by expanding their studio with a card that shows the assistant icon.
    2. The blue diploma tile rewarding the collection of landmark symbols relates to the landmark symbols on your studio cards, not the ones on your painting.
    3. Like The Wanderer already mentioned: You also score 1 point per Lesson card in your Print.
    We played Kanagawa in Essen last week and we liked the game very much. My girlfriend took it home as her one purchase of SPIEL 2016! ;-)

      (There's other ways to get the assistant too like diplomas with the assistant icon)

    You don't swap the apprentice token and the master token. Whoever is the first player gets both. When you get the apprentice then you get both master token and apprentice for the next round.

    Thanks for the introduction to Kanagawa! Here’s a quick overview of the game in 100 words! :-)
    1) Pass or pickup card(s) in column progressively dealt to rows 1, 2 and 3 in draw pile - each with painting (landscape, animals, people, houses, trees, seasons) and skills (specific landscape skill, add brush, move a brush to different landscape skill, pick-first privilege).
    2) Play cards to acquire skills or use skills to sequentially add painting to mural to reach 11+ paintings.
    3) Earn points on number of paintings + length of longest sequence of paintings with same season + harmony points displayed on cards + points for each diploma you claim first for specific painting and skill combinations (some come with tools & season wildcard).

    Guys I think your scoring is wrong. You should count the total cards on upper row plus the longest sequence of same season plus the extra vps shown plus your diplomas. So the guy on the right has 11 cards plus 8 winter in a row plus 4 extra vps plus the diplomas that is 11+8+4+12=35. Equally the guy on the left has 12+2+5+20+2(grand Master)=41

    Looks like a great game. I looked at the rules and it seems you forgot to count 1 point for each card:
    "1 point per Lesson card in your Print (including the Starting tile)"

    Thanks for this - I found the instructions so difficult to follow that I needed this video for it all to make sense. Brilliant, thanks guys.

    Only just started getting into board games, and I feel like I am going nuts buying so many. Just bought this and played it for first time tonight and it was good to get a general run through using your video. Wanted to point out I played the grandmaster and assistant token based on how you played it here but when I read the rules the learning cards and diploma's give you the assistant pawn, which allows you to then take the Grand Master Pawn and become the first player. The Grand Master (i.e. first player) does not change again unless the assistant pawn is moved during the round (which is why it makes getting the assistant more valuable as a strategy.

    Just picked up a used copy of this game at my local store for $10. Bought it on a whim because I'm a fan of Bruno Cathala but I'm glad to hear your opinion of it! I feel like my collection needs more of these kinds of games because I'm usually playing with fairly newish gamers that prefer 1 game per hour type of session.

      That's what I thought. But it looks like the second player has a decent chance of flipping bc they get to play their cards with the assistant second, moving it to them last in the round, potentially?

      If noone takes a card with the assistant figure, does the first player marker stay with the original first player for the next round?

    Love this game, hoping to pick it up soon.
    Great video, I was curious how it played two player. I think the game looks to work better with 3-4, but still seems fun with 2.

      Also, I personally really like the mechanic where if you don't take the diploma, you pass on it, but it always seems to lead to annoyed players at the end of these kinds of games no matter how much I stress it in the rules runthrough. I have not played this, but the same system is in place for the objectives in rise of augustus. I feel like I have to watch other players like a hawk and point out every time they qualify for a new tile.

  • @Aranneas
    @Aranneas 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Love the theme.
    It seems a bit swingy/random biased - if you get a good sequence of early cards like Frances did you can force the end of the game very quickly and it doesn't seem as if there's any counter play?
    It also seems like it was really hard for Anthony to pick up diploma cards at all. I can't tell from the flow of play what hurt him so much in this respect.
    Getting left with those extra lessons out of play at the end of the game seemed to hurt him a lot, as well.

      Aranneas I was building a season run on my painting and wasn't focusing on the diploma sets. By the time I thought to do it, it was too late.

    Got a great idea on the "flavour" of the game and the overall game play from your video. As for the critics picking on every rule mistake....isn't that something we all do from time to time. I really love your playthroughs and your videos remind me of the banter between my wife and I when we play. I always like to watch your play through before investing in any game. Keep up the great work guys

  • @PaulBaldowski

    Sort of feels like this could have done with a re-run, because missing features of the game made it confusing. So, you only remembered the facedown cards on the third round. And I think on the fourth round you still didn't account for the ability to use Improve your Studio cards as immediately useful to Expand the Print with Landscapes you only just got by Improving. I kept pausing, re-reading the rules, then cursing the confusion. Nice video, but value lost a little by your own lack of clarity on the rules.

    • @AntLabGames
      @AntLabGames  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      All good points and I can't argue with them. However, I would never suggest learning a game by watching our videos. These are playthroughs to give an idea on what a game plays like, not necessarily a tutorial. Always read the rules or check out Rodney at Watch it Played. That's what we do.

    • @fembrulee1883
      @fembrulee1883 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Paul! First, thank you so much for taking the time to comment. We really appreciate it.
      You make a fantastic point about the rules clarity, and in a way I am glad that came through in this particular playthrough. Our goal is to give people an idea of what they can expect while learning and playing the game, and one of my biggest frustrations with this one was the complex presentation of the rules. Still a fantastic game though :) Thanks for watching!
