    I own the original Defender, it's a good bit of kit, the best thing about the old Defenders is the fact there's no electronics that can fail, and if something does fail the chances are it would be repairable in the field enough to get you home. A good review though.

    This is the suv of the year for a reason. It is an excently engineered vehicle. It can handle most off road situations straight out of the box, and drives wonderfully on road. It is too soon to comment about reliability issues, but if it has any, a reputable independent shop can solve those issues. I know because my father founded Modern Classics, an independent shop that specialized in European vehicles, and we serviced all the top end brands without much if any additional cost to lower end vehicles like Chevy or Toyota.

    The North American models come prewired for a trailer brake controller. You can buy whatever trailer brake controller you want and use a standard Ford wiring harness. It’s plug and play. Takes five minutes to install. Works well. This is true for all North American land rovers that come with hitch from the factory. They’ve been doing it for decades.not sure about other countries around the world but I’m guessing they have it as well.

      Is a brand new model going to be as reliable as say a Corolla? (or at least the popular perception of a Corolla given my wife had one that was a total POS)? Probably not. Is it going to explode 30 yards outside the dealership as all the guys who had a friend who had a brother who's nephew's aunt once had one would have you believe? No. I don't have a new Defender as it doesn't suit my needs, though friends do have them. I do have 4 other Land Rovers though. If you're the sort of person that takes their car to a dealership to rotate the tires and change the oil it's probably not for you. But don't believe all the stereotyping you read on the interwebs based on 4th-hand reviews of a 30 year older model.

    For me, this is not an option. My wife and I started shopping for a new car in the spring. After renting and driving quite a few "SUVs" we landed on the 4 runner. We considered quite a bit. Longevity, cost of maintenance, overall build quality. We didn't want a cross over, but we drove many of them to see if they passed the sniff test. For us, it came down to Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, 4 runner.
    The Defender was considered, but the price, cost of ownership, and overall reliability...the tech I talked to said they would work all the bugs out. Yeah, no. I don't want to spend 70k on a car to have it in the shop. I am not spending 70k on a car that has a higher chance of being a pile of crap than others we looked at

      @@SaltyDog69 we had a wrangler Rubicon (4 doors, not sure what the Jeepers call them). It was a beast when we took it down a few trails (it was a rental, so the trails were not too difficult). The on-road performance and noise left a lot to be desired. We rented an SR5 4 runner. Again, a beast off off road but the on road performance was great. Comfortable ride had enough "tech" to keep my wife happy, but not too much (the Grand Cherokee has a ton of tech stuff I didn't care for).
      We ended up with a TRD Off-road package. We could not be happier. Got it for a screaming deal.

      I hope you don’t have the diesel 4 runner. Over here (Australia) there is a class action against Toyota for their 4cyl Diesel engine issues. This engine is in our Hiluxes, Prados and Fortunas. Toyota has really dropped the ball lately on the quality control and reliability.

    That payload sticker seems wrong! I could see 825kg or perhaps they meant to put 875kg which is about 1800lbs to 1975lbs which fits what I’ve seen on Land Rover’s website of between about 1,600lbs for a fully loaded larger engine to close to 2,000lbs for the smaller engine with minimal options.
    Regardless of the payload number, thanks for showing what the door sticker actually states! Most reviewers don’t do that and it’s lame. Most people who use trucks need to know those things.
    Another suggestion would be to take a tape measure and actually measure out the rear cargo area length, width, depth since most manufactures don’t seem to post those anywhere except for the volume which is useless. My Subaru Outback has almost the same cargo volume as this Defender, but the boxiness of the Defender results in much more actual useable space.

I just purchased the Defender X and I want to use my weight distributing hitch to tow my all aluminum 22’ car hauler(includes v hitch on trailer). Trailer payload is said to be 4560lbs do I need to somehow (if possible) turn off the dynamic stability system) to use this weight distributing hitch? Thanks!

    In Australia the payload or GVM fully loaded is 3,165 kg when the weight of the Defender is removed that is about 2,400kg leaving 765kg payload that will include the trailer ball weight. The towing maximum is 3.5 tons and the train weight of both Defender and trailer is 6,665 kg. Therefore 375kg seems very low for this Defender as 4 people at 100kg would put it over weight. Is there an obvious reason for this?

      @TruckKing  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lisa - the short answer is no. The WDH helps to give the rig a level attitude and reduce trailer sway - it won’t impact the stability system. However, I am wondering about the weight you mentioned. 4560 lb might be the carrying capacity of the trailer - but you have to add the weight of the trailer itself. At 22-ft that has to be at least 2000 - 2500 lb. You could gross out at over 7,000 lb and that’s a load I would not be comfortable towing with a Defender.

    In the UK we don't use brake controllers we just stick a thin cable around the towbar and the trailer does the rest. That'll probably be why there isn't an option for a brake controller.

    • @kylehendrix3531
      @kylehendrix3531 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The USA models come prewired from the factory for a brake controller. You can buy any brake controller and use a Ford wiring harness. It’s plug and play. Works well. Takes 5 minutes to install. True with all North American land rovers that come with a hitch from the factory.
