What do you think of the Buffalo Trace Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Rye? Have you tried it, or is it still on your wishlist? Let us know if this bottle lived up to the hype for you! 🥃
Still on my wishlist. I won't overpay to have one though. Haven't had a rye from Sazerac that warranted paying over retail and I doubt EHT Barrel Proof rye will change that opinion. Sazerac is great at many things but Rye is not one of them. The Straight Rye is great, one of my favorite BIB Rye's on the market. Too bad it's only ever on shelf for $115-300 in my area. I have dozens of better rye whiskies on my shelves that cost under $85 that beat EHT Straight Rye. If I find EHT Straight Rye for sub $100, I'd probably buy a backup but I wouldn't buy more than that.
Do you ever try such high proof whiskeys with - after trying neat - with a chip of ice to see how that changes the flavor profile? I will try those ryes, if I can get my hands on them - thanks for the video! Buddies with a pub owner who likes to share some of his exotic finds with some of his regular patrons - he's particularly passionate about getting the more exotic Buffalo Trace and Redbreast bottles. (Seattle here)
Great time seeing the behind the scenes of the video and be apart for this weeks episodes! I was amazing meeting so many channel memebers this weekend! Also, the sound is off because the main mic wasn't plugged in. Corrected for Wednesday's video, but my Friday's blind is also like this audio.
Here's another one. He may not be the sharpest tool in the shed... I realize English is a difficult language. There are a lot of words that sound the same but are spelled differently. But what adult American doesn't know what it means to be hoarse.
3:02 Hoarse, Trenton, not horse. 🙂 I don't know who chooses y'all's background music, but whoever it is does a fantastic job. It's always good jazz piano - I love it. 😍
Just popped my first one last night, just haven't seen it till now. Its fantastic! I'm a proof hound and it definitely caught me off guard! I had had 3 different Green River including a barrel strength and a pour of Bardstown Disco 9 ahead of the Jack. I still coughed a little on the 1st sip! That 136.6 proof with a heavy rye punch is no joke! Its delicious though!
Greatly appreciate you both for helping this misguided scotch drinker understand bourbons and American single malts (not really into ryes). Moving on from Speyside scotch (like Aberlour) and finding so many interesting options (through your guidance) has been thoroughly enjoyable. In thanks, I bought into the raffle, as there is no doubt how much the cause sincerely means to you. I hope it is a huge success!
I got my hands on their Straight Rye for retail here in California. Extremely lucky. But I'm with you, that the Straight Rye doesn't take like a Rye. I didn't enjoy it at all actually. Didn't mix into an Old Fashioned nicely either. Too strong of black licorice notes for me. But I'll sure make some friends happy when they come over. Glad I don't have to look for the barrel proof now after seeing this.
Was first in line at a store and didn’t realize they had EHT BP Rye and picked the EHT straight rye instead. Was really bummed when next guy got the BP Rye. Feeling much better about my choice now.

My binnys had a Saturday bottle drop. 5 guys were waiting outside since 8am. I got there around 945am. I was able to get an STFB for almost msrp. They only had 1 case of ETL, RHF, and Weller SiB. Then, 1 case of the EHT BP Rye and about 4 cases of Stagg 24B. And STFB was 3 cases. Then a few cases of EHT SiB and all black Willet purple top.
Have not tried the Van Winkle 13 yet, but Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye is, in my opinion, the bar for which all affordable and findable rye whiskey should be measured. Once you cozy up to that one, you will find yourself comparing all other ryes to it. ESPECIALLY a bottle out of Warehouse K. From your tasting notes, it is sounding like EHT BPR could be up that alley, especially with the "maple" notes you described.
With a few others on JDSBBP ryes (just got a Coy Hulk Nestor's pick, but haven't opened it yet). Also the cask strength Sagamores are great, especially the 8-year (looking forward to new 9-year, friend in MD just got a couple for me). And you can never have too much pepper on cottage cheese! (learned from my grandma as well)
I was really anticipating this release, and once again I have to thank you guys for keeping me from chasing, and probably overspending on, something that isn’t living up to the hype!
Thats what he said, and why he is surprised. Even wo the corn, and the high amount of rye, it doesnt drink like a rye. It doesnt have the rye spice you find in most ryes.
The Alberta Premium Cask Strength is amazing! It was on sale at Binnys for $29 and it was a steal. Back to $69 now but it’s worth that if you haven’t had it. Better than WhistlePig in my opinion, but opinions are like …….., everyone has one and most stink.
Trenton says this EH Taylor BP Rye is a bourbon drinker's rye and doesn't have the quintessential rye flavor. Then he's informed all those "quintessential ryes" he likes are just barely legally defined as rye whiskey with a mash bill of 51% rye, and that the two EH Taylor ryes are a higher rye mash bill. As if that information blew right over his head, Trenton them repeats his previous statement that EH Taylor rye is more bourbon based mash bill and bourbon drinker friendly. According to the interwebs, these two EH Taylor Rye whiskies have a mash bill of 70% rye 30% barley, no corn or wheat. Trenton is finding out he in fact prefers bourbon friendly rye over a hotter rye but can't bring himself to absorb that information.
If you havent had eht rye, than you wont understand. Just because of the mashbill, doesnt mean its more of a rye drinkers rye. I have the eh taylor straight rye, and it taste nothing like a rye, regardless of the mashbill. Most rye, and most people that enjoy rye, they like it because of the spicey/spices notes they offer, which you dont find in bourbon. There is none of the in eht rye. It taste much more like a sweet bourbon than any kind of rye, regardless of the mashbill.
We literally don’t get any of the E.H. Taylor ryes here in my parts of Canada. I was lucky to find one at a local whisky bar and splurged for a poor. Loved the BIB, but haven’t seen it since. How often do you see the regular BIB in your area?
Hey guys.......I definitely want to buy some raffle tix, but I need to know if the bottle(s) can be shipped if we win, or do we have to be present to claim the prize? Thanks!
Buffalo Trace has 2 rye mashbills, EH Taylor and Sazerac aka Thomas Handy/Van Winkle/Baby Saz. Taylor is supposedly just Rye and malted barley, no corn.
EHT has sadly lost its allure in my area. SB cannot be found for under 50, and thats when it's on sale. All the stores in SoCal have it for 60+, which has brought up the SiB as well. The straight rye is the only one that hasn't been as effected by inflation. BP can never be found so I don't foresee spotting this one anytime soon
Just another bottle I won’t see. I am a rye drinker but BT is just not something that comes around and if it does you have to be a camper and that's not my gig nor will it be. If I can't walk in and get it its not worth having and anyone who buys off secondary is well you get my point. Enjoy and I hope you reach your charity goal +.🥃🥃🥃
EH Straight Rye is not even Trace juice check the Sku on the back it comes from Barton!!! So I really get uninterested with BT because its become more about the money now!!!!
Buffalo Trace was a big thing before they decided to make everything allocated. The allocation came because a few regions were placing massive orders which made them higher priority, leaving other regions with very little or none at all. Sucks for those of us that used to drink a bottle of Pappy every weekend for years and can no longer get it at all, and while thankfully there's plenty of other excellent whiskies to fill the void it's like if Jack Daniels drinkers all the sudden couldn't find a single bottle unless they spent $1000 per bottle online.
What do you think of the Buffalo Trace Colonel E.H. Taylor Barrel Proof Rye? Have you tried it, or is it still on your wishlist? Let us know if this bottle lived up to the hype for you! 🥃
I haven't tried this one, but the Election Day Rye from Journeyman's is really good! (127 proof, 8 years old, $85)
Congrats. At least you were able to get one. I have a small batch😢
Do a small distillery blind. Sent yall Grand Teton private stock single malt and private stock 8 year old bourbon.
Still on my wishlist. I won't overpay to have one though. Haven't had a rye from Sazerac that warranted paying over retail and I doubt EHT Barrel Proof rye will change that opinion. It’s incredible how this man hasn’t heard of so many different terms/expressions in three decades of life.😂

Frey Ranch single barrel barrel proof rye is fantastic and Driftless Glen straight rye whiskey single barrel is also great

Nice to hear positive comments about something BT makes.
Hope the 10 tickets I purchased helps
How does it compare to Old Forester Single Barrel Barrel Strength Rye?
Not even remotely close. Old Fo is more of a typical rye with rye spice. EHT rye doesnt have much if any rye spice.
I’ve also heard that Barton distills eh Taylor rye
It’s from my Flaviar subscription
As a non corn rye, it's unique and epic IMHO Gonna be in my end of year ryes blinds
I was told there would be no fact checking
Interesting episode. Is it the same mash bill as Sazerac Rye? I do not recall that being mentioned.
I dont believe so. EhT rye is its own mashbill. Saz shares the mashbill with THH. Carlos mentions this toward the end
I don't think that Rye is Distilled at BT either??
