Yes, as a dutch person i 100% agree. We have most of our movies in English with dutch subtitles. You learn both languages, as such it doesn't surprise me that (same as audio language) subtitles do improve literacy.
Both my stepkids are self taught early readers, both reading in the months before starting primary school and I believe 100% it's due to captions - especially video games. Watching each other play, or their parents, or themselves...esp. for Pokemon. Very motivating. The more print/text you are exposed to in your environment as a young child, the more easily you pick it up as a language.
I’m a child of the 1980’s before all the video game systems were in virtually every house. I turned on my record player with a stack of stories “that you can read along with me in your book. You will know it is time to turn the page when you hear the chimes ring like this…” except when I turned on the Star Wars books then you would hear R2-D2 beep like this… Good times!! 🙃
Definitely! I got a GameCube when I was little and there was just no way to play games like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon unless you could read what was happening. I was frustrated that I couldn't play such cute, fun looking games, but it motivated me to learn to read and I'd watch my literate big sister play until I could manage it myself.
Cats rule, I love them. Also I watch every movie with subtitles so I can read what they're saying and not have to listen so hard. Something in how my brain works I guess.
@Sak Attack I have to agree with you! No matter where you live, the same result is happening. The rich, muli-billion dollar companies, monopolies, hospital's and drug makers have become so much more powerful, in terms of net worth & cash flow! Tesla CEO, Amazon CEO, Microsoft's former CEO & founder, ETC... Have all doubled or in some cases tripled their personal and businesses net worths! Where did that money come from? Small businesses, who used to be their competition. They may have been small competition, but were keeping a small Ballance of health markets for the consumer. No matter what your stance on the virus is, the fact that only the mega-rich & politicians in Government have benefited from the existence of the virus is irrefutable! Was the pandemic planned and purposeful? Was it truly am act of God and nature? The fact is, it doesn't matter! The results are the same anyway, across-the-board! The Government's, the tech giants, and the huge retailers get total control over you and me! The lockdowns prevent us from having any choice of where to spend your money. The laws our Government's are bending and our reactions to the change, has shown them the easily we accept massive top down CONTROL! The solution isn't easy! The solution takes courage and huge numbers of us speaking out louder than ever before! We must protest in a peaceful way and find a way to keep paid undercover protest agitators, who cause violence to breakout. This giving our Governments cause to break up the crowds! Rough road! Most important thing is faith in Jesus Christ during this time. Prayer really works and Jesus has promised where 2 or more are gathered in my name, He would be right there with them. He DEFENDS us, He protects us from evil.
he does make good points. I personally dislike using subs (other than for films which have drowned dialogue) since I feel it pulls my eyes down away from what's going on, but it's definitely valuable for children as they learn to read and write.
The Reactionary what about movies like Letters from Iwo Jima? I love that movie since it gives a rare look into the Imperial Japanese Army’s perspective leading up to that faithful battle.
More attention from people that does nothing than watching youtube videos ? Or are you talking about those people in the meeting, because clearly when they see the tail they saw it as a distraction and laugh it off because of how goofy it is and i'm 100% sure that does not give the message dRasTiCalLy more attention.
@GB You do realize, most people watching TH-cam have a life outside of it and don’t just watch TH-cam videos all day. Also, if something like this happens and the video goes viral, the person’s message is reaching more people, thus creating more awareness of the topic at hand.
@@bluegirl278 oh wow, clearly everyone that watches this video pay attention to what he said instead of that tail. It's clearly seen from the comments that everyone is talking about the message instead of the cat
@@gb7586 Of course the cat is what most people are focussing on but that doesn’t change the fact that the video is far more popular than it ever would’ve been otherwise. That still means more people are hearing the message.

As a someone whose country had subtitles for almost everything (no dubbing, except for few kids movies meant for children under age 7...) Subtitles do help you to learn read faster, and they help you to learn a new language. I was slow when reading at first, but few months watching undubbed TV with subtitles helped me to catch up as a child. Even a "dumb" child knows how to read well and understands English because we have subtitles on everything.
@@Sienisota I mean agree with you because we had exactly the same situation while I was a kid. Subtitles helped me learn 2 languages and sped up my reading, so I'm not against them. But I think the argumentation behind dubbing children's movies is what I stated in my first comment.
He actually has a valid argument. As a non-native English speaker, I actually learnt English by reading subtitles from movies and anime when I was small. I remembered asking my father the meaning of the words that I didn't know.
There's also a counter-point that once you reach a certain level of proficiency, subtitles would actually decrease your *spoken* language literacy since you'd spend more time reading the text instead of listening to the words and watching their lips move.
@@violettbellerose1173 lol it seems so wierd to me, like other people not knowing English it is my first and only language so I find it interesting haha
@@pcenero true but sometimes people do learn from imitating the actors/actresses way of speaking. So by reading the subs, you know exactly what they're saying then you can imitate the spoken English. It still depends on the person whether they want to implement the spoken English or not though.
Moe politics takes time, if they only focused on “real issues” there wouldn’t be much to do. I would also consider a possibly double in literacy rate to be a “real issue”.
@@moez3g It is much harder to address "real issues" than you would think. You would need to plan out the logistics, effects, how it would benefit the country, and also try to gauge public support. On top of that politicans usually have different angles to tackle those issues and not everyone will agree holding up even more. It is not a simple oh yeah we talk and we all agree right now type if thing. Something like subtitles are much easier to agree on and are much more bipartisan if anything. If you look in America, the politicians there never get a single thing done with how split everyone is on say a topic like social welfare. There will always be opposition to how to execute this.
@@moez3g every "real issue" is broken down into these type of smaller issues that have to be addressed. Literacy and education are very important "real" issues, and this is just one of many things that are done to address this problem.
Honestly is impressive the amount of things that you can learn if it's interesting enough for you
I played Pokemon a lot as a kid, and although I was already a strong reader, I'm certain it helped retain that.
Pokemon and other rpgs played a massive part in me learning to read growing up

Before Rocco interrupted it was an interesting point. Why aren't subtitles default for children's TV? It makes perfect sense.
Right? After hearing that I made a mental note that if I ever have kids I'm making sure the subtitles are on.
Depending on the child's age, they might not yet be able to read. At least that's the argument why there are no subtitles in my country.
@@Dreeblet the point is that having subtitles helps children learn to read. The fact they can't yet read is the whole point.
As a someone whose country had subtitles for almost everything (no dubbing, except for few kids movies meant for children under age 7...)
Subtitles do help you to learn read faster, and they help you to learn a new language.

Exactly! My english improved significantly after listening to my favorite shows with the subtitles on.

Moe you should apply then buddy
Moe politics takes time, if they only focused on “real issues” there wouldn’t be much to do. I would also consider a possibly double in literacy rate to be a “real issue”.
NICE PROFILE PIC BRO :))
