I’m a metal/punk/noise guy, never would have checked this band out. I liked his playing enough that I listened to their newest record, wow, a masterclass in songwriting and his playing is fantastic and brilliant. Thanks for this, what a killer, creative player.
I spoke to Jonathan after a show in Amsterdam (2nd time i saw them), and he was so kind, it was sort of unreal. He really took the time to speak to me and answer any questions i had. Both his playing and his recording techniques showed me that you can achieve a lot with mostly utilitarian gear, i believe he only used some microphone pre-amps and some light eq-ing to achieve his and his bandmates sound on the first and second record. Great musician and person i think!
Like Jimmy Page, Jonathan produces The Beths and is arguably one of the best producers in the world. I think he could totally go "Jack Antonoff" if he wanted to for other artists as one helluva side hustle. But unlike Jimmy Page, Jonathan Pearce is a much stronger technician of the art of guitar. He seems to have a very disciplined kind of attitude and a professorial vibe that is almost FRIPPIAN, albeit more accessible. I LOVE this band. All the albums are killer. The musicianship is insane (thank you New Zealand Jazz schools!) Everybody contributes beautifully like the legendary power-pop and hard rock rocking team combos of yore (your Cheap Tricks, Weezers, Blurs, GBV's, et al.) Thank you to Jason Isbell for sharing "Dying to Believe" on his Twitter in early 2021. I was instantly bitten by how great The Beths are and I believe they are one of the most important guitar-driven rock bands on Earth working today.
Thanks for this. The Beths are amazing and Jonathan is the definition of a tone chaser. I'm a metal gal, but I love his tones on all their songs. Such a thoughtful approach to every tune.
Great to see this. Jump Rope Gazers is a great album, and Expert in a Dying Field is one of my top albums of '22. The production on their albums is top notch -- crisp and clean, the textures all come through. I host a public radio show and it's magnificent on the studio monitors.
Huge fan of The Beths and Jonathan! It was awesome seeing them at a smaller show in Salt Lake City. I got to walk straight up to the front and peer at his board. Very inspirational sounds and perspectives on music. Thanks for this great content, EQD.
My girlfriend got me into the band and I’m so thankful, they’re wonderful. We saw them on this 2022 us tour and they sounded just like their records, if not better. And the nicest people too!
Excellent video and great information! I have the Wampler Plexi Drive Deluxe and the Pantheon Deluxe in my board. I stacked them but in the other way than what you have it here. I use the Plexi Drive as my low overdrive with gain at 9 o clock and the bright switch on into the channel 2 of the Wampler Pantheon at low gain/ soft clipping. But I also use the medium gain and the soft / hard in the channel 2 of the Pantheon for great lead tones. The Pantheon and the Plexi are great & react more as a real amp does. Awesome drives!
Saw them live in Melbourne last year!!😍😍 They are so goddamn cool! I’m torn between wanting them to get the fame they absolutely deserve vs keeping their songs to myself 😭🥹
Talking to Jon about pedals was so fun he really knows his stuff…. I’d be that into it except they cost so much… and for data corrupter I’m quite into my mower lo-fi
Jonathan should have a look at the Boss RE-2 for an echoey reverb effect. JHS Morning Glory V4 is a more transparent blues breaker than the Wampler Always find it interesting how people approach pedals
I use & love my morning glory V4 as a clean low gain boost into the Wampler Pantheon Deluxe and it sounds phenomenal. Yes, I always find the morning glory more like a clean boost pedal, I don’t like it a high gain settings. Love it at low drive. The medium gain switch in the Pantheon with the soft / hard clipping voice gives you great lead tones more like MIAB than a typical BluesBreaker circuit. They sound killer together! 🔥🔥
Is that Fender Deluxe his usual amp or the one you guys had in the studio? Awesome video with one of my favorite guitarists and my favorite pedal brand. Keep up the series!
I respect John not using some fancy Pedaltrain or Mono board. Just a literal sheet of metal from a public sign! 😆 It's all well & good buying a ready made board, but I've honestly seen guys on Reverb selling what essentially a polished plank of wood, and they want anywhere between £80 - £200 for it. You're better off going to a hardware store and crafting your own. Makes for a fun DIY project too. It's what I've done with my boards, and you still make them look just as good with a bit of wood stainer or some polish.
He said he uses it in "Acrid" from their album Jump Rope Gazers. Check out The Beths Show Us Your Junk Episode to see Jonathan playing through the Data Corrupter! About 7:40 min in 😊 th-cam.com/video/qzJ6F1OqFDM/w-d-xo.html
Well not in this video, but if you watch The Beths Show Us Your Junk episode, he does play through the Data Corrupter. Around 7:40 mark ;) th-cam.com/video/qzJ6F1OqFDM/w-d-xo.html
corflute,...not very rigid, notice how it flexes when he presses down on the pedals...essentially just something to hold all the pedals together....would make it light but not sure how well it would hold up as plastic eventually cracks/gets warn out,...but would be easy to replace...so i guess it would just depend on if you care if it flexes or not.

Thats awesome!
I love how he and Liz both run a Hoof and a RAT like they're about to hit us with some Sunn wall of sound lmao
This absolute legend reached out to me and sent me a free signed record when i had an issue with some company. Biggest respect to him
So sweet!

Jonathan has some of the best tones of any guitarist you'll hear
100% agreed

@@EarthQuakerDevices I should have mentioned I also own a few EQD pedals as well.
The best part of my week was blasting up a river in my jet boat at Sunrise with The Beths on my headphones.

Gotta love that SUNN amp in the background. I guess Jonathan Drones/Dooms in his spare time.
When he plays "Eruption" don't try to interrupt him. 😉
I LOVE THE BETHSSSSSSS

How do we not get a Data Corrupter demonstration? Did anyone catch what song he said he uses it for?

So many gains. All the gains. But it works.

So this is what would’ve happened if @beneunson went indie?
...this is what would happen if Steve Buscemi had a baby with a serial killer.
