I have been a commission painter for the past 20 years...
Armies i have painted for female clients or sold to a female client.
    Necrons, four
    Eldar, painted one, one sold
Sisters of battle, four, the one on my table currently will make five before the end of September.
Nids, seven, did a 3000 point expansion on one of these armies earlier this year, mostly bio titains she had gotten ner hands on.
    Tau, two
    Orks, one painted, one sold
Harlequins, three painted, one of these i was asked to match a paint scheme of the one troupe/star weaver she had painted herself, two sold
This is all the same client...
    Daemons, tzeentch/slaanesh, one
    Daemons, tzeentch/nurgle, one
    slaanesh for aos, one
The only... space marine "army"... was a gag for her husband...
Two units of angry marines... he is an imperial fist player.
The other space marine entry for a woman i have, is a dad that, ordered up his daughter's kill team painted up in my little pony character colors as part of a kill team birthday gift... hilariously i ended up painting up a warcry starter set for her as she "didn't want the spacemen"... i still swear he lost a bet and had them painted for himself and used his daughter as an excuse. Because those models have shown up at the game store... Ahhh friends...

The minis coming out of my Bambo A1 with 0.2mm nozzle look so great with little to no cleanup! not super duper crisp-great but they definetly have reached a level of detail GW had 15 years ago when I got into the hobby and thats absolutely *insane!* And it doesnt make any dirt, big noise or other maintenance issues usually connected with Resin. I think if this continues, FDM printing will be the true nail in the coffin for GW. Everybody can have it. Its super affordable. It can stand anywhere in any room. The material is super cheap. it has already reached a level of detail perfect for gamers and is likely to top that in the next couple of years.

Turns out game's workshop F him over even though he's probably the reason a good chunk of us were introduced to Warhammer, oh and the patches that could make the rulebook outdated, and those books are the same price if not more expensive than some combat patrol, doesn't make it better that games workshop has been continually increasing the kits prices every year.
Other than that, the lore has always been F over, multiple retcons has happened before to made things a lot more logical, but the way they introduced female custodians was practically nonexistent, they really just said female custodian has always existed, which is probably why most fans were angry at them

As Fantasy old blood, I've been warning 40k fans for a few years now that they're heading for their own End Times event and AoS-style "sequel". The rolling out of the Primaris Marines and the gradual return of all the Primarchs are two of the biggest indicators of this trend.
The misunderstanding with my warning, however, is that people tend to think that means it'll be a 1-1 repeat of the End Times, but it won't. GW learned for their past experience with the End Times, and has opted to roll out the 40k changes in a much more gradual and tested manner.
It's imperative to understand that GW views the 40k setting, as it was, as "restrictive". They want to dismantle the existing framework to make a setting that's more open ended and flexible. By doing so, GW can do anything they want with their product - that could range from shoving in brain-dead politics, to making consumers rebuy their armies. This is what AoS was/ is, and this it what 40k 2.0 will be.

    • @Culexus101
      @Culexus101 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

I don't disagree, but I think it's sad that GW would see 40k (and Fantasy) as restrictive because they both started out as very broad kitchen sink settings that were designed to be able to accommodate a wide variety of creature types and character types. 40k has to be one of the most well conceived wargame settings ever because damn near everyone has a reason to fight everyone else. It's an odd thing that companies with well developed, deep IPs with dedicated fanbases often seem to end up chaffing at the restrictions that places on them whilst companies with newer, less well developed IPs look on with envy. It's a grass is always greener mentality, the owners of an established IP crave freedom and the owners of new IPs crave the structure a developed IP provides.
Regarding the Brain-dead politics, it seems that GW has lost interest in working with dystopias, especially a morally ambiguous, black on black one like 40k. They so desperately want Space Marines to be the heroes though. AOS was their first attempt at a more straight forwardly black and white setting where the good Stormcast had to fight the bad worshippers of Khorne but it did so poorly they had to inject some ambiguity back into the setting with the subsequent editions. Still not as much as 40k though.

    • @stephenjenkins7971
      @stephenjenkins7971 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Culexus101 Hard disagree. Fantasy itself was quite literally the most good vs evil Warhammer setting, even when considering AoS. Even early AoS had this ambiguity on who the good guys were that Old Fantasy lacked. Now if you're talking about post-6th edition Fantasy that introduced stuff like Bretonnian nobility taking 99% of their farmer's grain, then yeah, they grimdarked Fantasy by a lot at that point.
But before that? It was by far the most good vs evil setting.

    • @Justacheese

@@stephenjenkins7971 This is interesting to hear. Because I remember reading about this one incident in the lizardman army book.
A bunch of high elves, who were supposed to be their staunch allies were butchered, because a slaan (One of the magical toad guys in charage of the lizardmen) read an ancient tablet and it said the high elves were not meant to be in the lizardman homelands yet. So the slaan had all the high elves butchered so it wouldn't conflict with the rules of his stone tablet of prophecy.
Is this the sort of stuff that was added to the 6th and 5th editions of fantasy? Because my memory is a little bit fuzzy, but I remember joining the fantasy setting and building my whole army not to long before its demise and the end times fiasco went down.

    • @stephenjenkins7971
      @stephenjenkins7971 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@Justacheese High Elves and Lizardmen were never "staunch allies". The Lizardmen considered the Asur to be bugs at most. They attacked anyone that got in their way; their goals just so happened to have aligned in the first Chaos Invasion so the Asur stayed out of their way and the Lizardmen stayed in Lustria for the most part.
That being said, I don't recall if that was the idea behind the Lizardmen from the start, or that began at a certain Edition. So I can't really answer your question. I do recall a massive "grimdarking" of Fantasy in 6th Edition onwards, though. Like, the idea of Slaanesh eating up elven souls was introduced at that time, adopted from 40k.
That being said, the End Times occurred in 8th Edition.

Where pissing off the wrong people, or just being unlucky, could get someone burnt as a Witch or Warlock even if they had no magical powers whatsoever.

12.15 Thankyou!!! I have a 25k pt deathwatch force pretty much entirely made up of Firstborn marines as i found Primaris to be a lame addition to the lore. Slowly but surely they have grown on me admittedly. But i was more interested in a pushback against them within the narrative. As in firstborn, being extremely hesitant or even a primarch taking offence at their geneseed being worked on without their knowledge. And was bitterly disappointed that we got neither of those.
Not to mention recent changes that made my collection pretty much redundant. And that change, brought on by vocal fans who do not collect deathwatch, is in direct conflict with GWs' recent 9th edition deathwatch lore. (Guilliman donated entire companies of "greyshields" to watch fortresses so that they could take offensive actions instead of stuck running small killteams. GW has done a 180° turn on that lore tid bit, but have not even bothered to explain why there is a 180° turn in the narrative. And have just quickly moved on.

The process is a mystery yada yada and the emperor is quite the pragmatist, so it doesn’t strike me as something that couldn’t happen, but it also seems like something that absolutely does not matter in the grand scheme of things. In the lore, females can’t become space marines because the process destroys their bodies, there is no such precedent for Custodes. That being said, as of right now it feels hamfisted as all hell and I’m excruciatingly disappointed about the disregard for the Sisters of Silence.

I've kinda softened to the idea of female Custodians, I hate how GW introduced them by just saying "They've always existed" despite there being no description of female Custodes. Some writers did include very vague mentions here and there but that really doesn't confirm or back up the argument that female Custodes have existed for over 10 millennia.
Personally, if GW wanted to pull the "They've always existed" and actually give a logical or solid reason as to why, they could've added some lore onto Erda, the mother of the Primarchs, where The Emperor designed a small batch of Custodes to guard her and they just happen to be female to differentiate them from his normal Custodes, lets says there's about 100 of them at maximum, that way, you can introduce the concept of female Custodes, but no in a way that spits in the faces of people who like Custodes and their lore, and it adds to a character that does have a pretty important presence in the universe (or at least in the 30k era to an extent).

They could've used lore and said that the male-only Custodes had to be reinforced with Sisters of Silence taking the vows of a Custodian because they took heavy casualties during the Indomitus Crusade; perhaps because more than a couple thousand of them ran afoul of some traitor Primarchs who decided to mount their golden heads on spikes, so some of the Sisters of Silence got up-jumped into becoming Custodes because they're not only almost as good as the Custodes, but they also know how Custodes act, and that would help them fit in better. That's how you could've made it make sense, instead of pretending that there have always been female Custodes.

@@northernexile GW went for 10,000 years, there’s for all this time, in fact been a brand new character, actually no, not new, there’s always been a Cawl since like emperor times (like there’s always been female custodes).
He’s a magic tech man, who has in complete and total secret created primaris marines. Science that’s the closest anyone has come to the emperor. Ohh and they are all better than your entire army.
How is someone this universe warping never spoken of by any character? His touch and influence never felt by the imperium or it’s enemies? A character who worked with the emperor yet is never mentioned by him or plays any role in the heresy? The scouring? There’s just nothing. Not even a vague codex paragraph.
Then the project itself. How is that logistically possible? Nobody knew? Nobody noticed? No traitors? No leaks? None of Cawls enemies within the Mechanicus learned what he was doing? No escaped test subjects? No resources needed for this project? It’s as bad as Palpetine and his secret army from episode 9. Awful writing.
Then we have the absurdity of crossing the rubicon being a huge risk, yet every named space marine succeeds. Then that every single space marine chapter is just totally fine with integrating primaris marines, no friction, no conflict, no whiff of heresy.
This is comparable to oh yeah, there’s actually been some female custodes knocking about.
Actually I was around for both and it’s not comparable, because you all seem far more enraged by this than fucking Cawl.
This is adding stuff too, a whole gender in fact. That we got better models is meaningless when it’s the lore that you take issue with. If they released five S tier female custodian models tomorrow and three 5* peak Abnett books you’d still have a problem with it. And imagine your reaction if they decided one of the unnamed primarchs was actually female.

I think you made some good points but there are some pretty hard disagrees in here.
Throughout the rant, you have a extremely negative view of people who are okay with female custodes and GW and believe like they are all acting out of malice. I think your point of 'not everybody who hates female custodes is doing so for bad reasons' should also apply to people who don't mind the change and GW. I think female custodes are alright, and I don't really hold any ill will towards anybody I disagree with, save for the ones who actively bullied people homebrewing female representation before the change.
Second, I also hold the lore in strong regard and strongly dislike Cawl and Primaris, (as well as the Mag'Ladroth rewrite) but I don't think all lore purists are a monolith on opinion. Despite the name, brotherhoods are not always all male (Brotherhood of steel being my go to example) an bioalchemy was never restricted by gender unlike geneseed. While a few old lore excerpts are retconned, I do not think the change is as big as it is made out to be, I don't see a big difference between male and female custodes.
Third, I just don't see female custodes take anything away from sisters of silence, as you said yourself, it's their abilities as blanks and being a elite warrior order that sets them apart and makes them so cool. Custodes where never and are still not that, and lorewise they still complement each other, covering each other's weaknesses. It's even seen in the animation you complained about, as I believe the two protagonists are a custode and a sister of silence, although admittedly I have not had the means to watch Tithe yet.
I think all around it was a alright rant and you have your reasons, but I wanted to speak up, as you acted a bit like those who disagree are some sort of monolith and harbour ill will towards you.
    Cheers.
Also, in case anybody tries that tourist nonsense in the replies, I've been playing since I was a kid and have a ton of armies, my main being nearly 200 firstborn Lamenters

in plastic the sisters of silence have:
    - 1 squad kit that can be built one of three ways
    - 1 character kit that comes with both a sister of silence and a custodes
    - the rhino but it's just the space marine rhino, no upgrade kit for it just here take a rhino
    in resin they have:
    - 1 weapons pack with twin pistols that is heresy only
    - 1 black library character model that can be used as a generic hq if chosen
    - 1 30k only transport
    by contrast the custodes have:
    - 8 plastic kits
    - 16+ resin kits and upgrade kits
while on the surface level female custodes don't bother in a vacum until i see the real things it really means that gw won't properly expand the sisters of silence because gw will go "oh but we've made it so custodes can be female so we won't be expanding this range in 40k, oh 30k we provided rules but no models for new units we might consider doing when we've run out of tanks for every other faction first and then updated all the xenos range for 40k too
i write this as several times I have attempted to be a sister of silence player in 40k and gw just kept fucking them up on a rules front. last i looked at their rules they weren't even immune to psychic powers they were just resistant which is lame but then this edition psychic powers are lame compared to their glory days back in 7th edition

Of all the changes GW has made over the years that have bothered me (Primaris being the No1 offender) the female Custodians are the one I want to like the most, but just don't, and the way they handled it, basically lore by Tweet, was just down right disrespectful to the fans who actually took the time to read GWs lore. I own both the 8th ed and 9th ed Custodes Codices even though I don't play the army just so I could have their lore. If they'd had Cawl wave his magical deus ex machina wand and now all of a sudden the Custodes can convert females going forward I'd have given them the side eye and thought "I know way you're doing this, but at this point what's one more asspull to add to Cawls list", but they didn't, they had to make it retroactive, and imo it was too late to make that kind of change. In fact it was too late in 2018 when the first codex landed, you would have to go all the way back to the mid 00s* when GW first started developing the HH as a setting (for a card game of all things) to get to a point where GW could've introduced female Custodes, and do you know what GW did instead? They invented the Sisters of Silence...
*I genuinely don't think many would've minded if GW ignored the Rogue Trader era Custodes fluff because so much of the Rogue Trader fluff in the original BRB had been altered and reworked even before second ed dropped. RT also tended to use 'Man' in a deliberately antiquated way to mean 'Mankind', or simply 'Human'. The Imperium of Man wouldn't have lasted very long if its name was literally true...

What they could have said was post Horus Heresy they were desperate for new recruits because they lost I believe it was around 80 to 90% of their force from the War in the Webway and the Siege of Terra. They took any high born infants male or female and put them through the process and a few women managed to become Custodes but it was an extremely low amount like 50 to 100 women tops in the 10,000 managed to survive the process. That way it would explain why there were so seldom seen in the galaxy at large. It's not perfect but it give them plausible believability in the setting.

A small, loud minority is forcing things like diversity and equity, in the worst, communistic sense of the terms, and at the expense of a built in fan base. If i knew that the majority of my viewers wanted me to stick to lifting and they hated my figurine painting, but a tiny minority made fun of my base for being exclusive, who am I going to cater to? My majority audience, of course. Otherwise, I go broke and noone watches my channel. Why?
sure, you get called names.... ist, phobe.... bigot, racist.... but the truth is that the MAJORITY doesn't want it, and they did it anyways. I think the way the new Space Marine 2 is doing on steam speaks for itself. despite the leftist crying for diversity and for us to boycott, they are making money hand over fist by catering to the majority, and we could not be happier. I don't care that there are female custodes. I care that they are not consistant with the lore. Consistency keeps a loyal fan base, making stupid changes that override the years of lore is the dumbest thing they can do and sadly its happening.
