  • Building the crankshaft truing station by the lost home casting process. We will start with making the foam parts from high-density foam and then move on to bearing them in sand where we will cast them out of aluminum with recycled metal.

    Your pouring costume is great. Viewers who might try this should remember the basic law of foundry work which is "Iron (steel) bounces off your skin, all else STICKS!! and boils skin for a long time til you dig it off with pliers". Good looking castings!

      Thanks tony . This friday ill have the next part out . Had an issue with the pour and the bases need to be redone again . To big of pore and not enough in the cup to keep it full . Lots of fun and learning :)

    Looking forward to seeing the rest of the truing stand build!
    PS. the blue/pink insulation board panel foam is also polystyrene foam - the extruded form of it (XPS) rather than the expanded bead type (EPS)

    Ah the smell of burning styrene.....
    I set up muffin tins for ingots with the leftover. Cheap bread pans and soup cans work great as single use ingots for machinable stock. I use a cheap woodworking CNC and water quench parts. I don't know if it helps artificially age the casting for better machining, but it makes me feel like I'm doing something.

    polystyrene is a polimer styrophoam is made out of, not the end product so both low density expanded styrophoam and uniform extruded foam insolation panels are both made out of the same material polistyrene, the only difference is that low density packing material is expanded from plastic pelled by overheated steam while uniform insolation foam is directly injected into a mold in liquid foam state ps is only visable on styrophoam product made out of pellets for recycling, and many supermarket food trays have the same marking while being the same kind of foam as your insolation panels
    you can also buy polystyrene sheets for vacum forming or injection pellets or 3d printer filement in solid state . it is also part of abs and hips plastic composition
    anyway nice project you making thre

      Thos has to be one of the best comments i have ever had !! Thank you for taking the time to write it , it is very insightful. You have sent me down the rabit hole now of steam and expanding the pellets . Sounds dangerous i know ,lol . Dont worry it will be a while before i wade through a zillion projects and get to this and i will be very carfule . Lots of people ask about expanded foam but its not usable i have heard. but the pellets and steam would work .
      This almost gets into a large industral set up of injection molding and casting and i wonder if that process would be any faster in the long run than making each part manualy or cnc?

      @@Wrighmachining well it is high flow production process, pellet contain a tiny bit of carbohydron that expand from the temperature while plastic is getting soft
      steam is used as heat source because both superheated styrene and aditive are basicaly as flamable as gasoline so it has to be injected to sealed container with no excess oxygen but also vented to evacuate excess gases that can be used as a fuel for steam boiler. i wouldn't try that at home
      pellets thown into fire explode so it is to be stored safely too

      Polystyrene foam is the one that comes with refrigerators. This type of phone is the high density phone that is used for insulation under concrete. It when broken does not have the little tiny white balls.
      You can use Polystyre foam for lost foam casting , however it will be more difficult to machine and get a good surface finish.
      I always sue polystyre foam for the inlet because it is lower dencity .

      Glad you liked it joel . This friday part 2 is coming . Just have to recut the baces again today and recast them . The cup ran dry yesterday when casting due to the size . The casting didnt come out 100% . Should be a cool video :)

    Can you use aluminum alloy wheels to melt down as well? Like big truck (18wheeler) wheels obviously cut down

    • @Wrighmachining
      @Wrighmachining  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would think so . The majority of alu wheels are casted . However you jave to watch out for mags ( magnezium ) there is a way to test it with acid ( drano ) to check
      One or the other will turn black on bare metal .

    What is the aluminum frame from?

    • @Wrighmachining
      @Wrighmachining  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its a mp12 gesmar rail grinder frames . I used to have a contract rebuilding the frame bodys with new rollers and bearings . These frames where deemed unusable by the customer and had cracks or other issues that made them slated for garbage .
      One mans garbage is another mans treasure :)
