Tonight, the Recording Academy will honor the couple with the Producers & Engineers Wing award. Gayle King sat down with them ahead of their big night for their first interview together.

Egypt from what I’ve noticed in different videos and other reports seems to be very focused and caring like his mama. I believe he is destined to do something big within the music industry and not just because he is Alicia’s child but because he has that gift. Granted others may also be gifted who don’t have the advantage of knowing the “right” people but nevertheless there is no doubt Egypt has some God given talent and that can’t be denied nor taken for granted.

For the longest time I used to say I saw everyone as equals (black, white, man, woman). Wanting to feel that and actually and truthfully believing can be worlds apart. And I would feel bad inside why did my need to treat others as equals couldn't honestly be felt all the time. I mean I treat everyone with respect and kindness. But the thoughts in my head would be messed up. Sometimes I thought maybe I was actually prejudiced. I found myself being kind because I felt bad for a person (which is a judgment that a person isn't ok). My kindness would be as a way to compensate for my perceived wrongs they had in life. This made me upset. Watching this video though showed me my focus on color and race was a distraction. It has to do with energy and the vibe a person gives off and if it feels right to be touched by it. Watching Alicia and Swizz was truly captivating. I could listen to them all day. Not just music, but perspectives on life too. I think my inner conflict is actually treating everyone as equals when inside I don't like their energy. I don't know if anyone understands what I'm saying. But Alicia and Swizz are so cool, just listening to them helped me to understand myself that much better.

I feel like she tried to compete in a time when Beyonce was thriving (2008 onward), and i don't think she shoulda done that. No one really talks about the impact her early music had.

They were separated and about to divorce. She wanted to work it out and asked Alicia to step off so she could work on her marriage but he wanted out. There was a woman between his last wife and Alicia but he was crazy about her so they got married and have worked it out with his ex and everyone is happy now.
