Neither have they, Kosciusko the tallest mountain on the Australian mainland is only the third highest in Australia. Mt McClintock in the Britannia range, Australian Antarctic Territory is the highest and Mawson's Peak on Herd Island, again in the Antarctic Territory is second.
You were dangerously under prepared/equipped for the trip, but fortunately you were lucky and the weather did not catch you out too much. Rapid change has happened many times to others, sometimes with fatal results. It is not a high mountain, but it is still hazardous in any season. You saw how fast the cloud came in, and it could easily get to whiteout, and once you lose the path on the high plains you can disappear and your body not be found until summer. Fortunately you did not. The story of the woman in front who slipped is far from unusual. You don't seem to have realised what a risk you took. I'm loving your videos of your exploration of my home country, but please, please be careful. We want you to have a great time and just take away great memories.
Totally Agree, Great photography but you need to be more careful - no gloves and socks let alone weatherproof clothing, appropriate shoes or emergency beacon also cell phone reception is patchy and yes. people do go missing like stated. Even a few snowboarders died when caught in a blizzard a decade ago and not found till summer even though they were just a few hundred meters from a patrolled area. If anyone else is thinking of doing this please be more careful. Staff at the lift have a duty of care to warn people of the dangers.
Yeah, not sure what the resort staff were doing. They should have warned you. That’s very, very underdressed for June in the High Country. You could have been caught in a blizzard.
@@AuntyJack123 Have you ever been hypothermic in a white-out? I have. Blizzards blow across the tops of mountains in minutes. It can go from sunny to zero visibility almost instantly. You can't tell up from down, you have no depth perception. You accidently wander off the trail, fall down a slope, maybe just a hundred metres. Maybe you hurt your leg or hit your head. Doesn't matter, you won't find your way back up. There's no cell phone coverage. Everything is just white. You start feeling tired, like you want to lie down and go to sleep in the snow. You lose the ability to focus and concentrate, everything slows down. Nobody will find you. Happens all the time. Just ask any ski patrol at a big resort. They all have stories.
Many moons ago I drove my mini minor to the top (before they stopped it) there used to be a letter box at the top. Couldn't see a thing as we were in cloud and it was summer.

I did this walk 3 weeks ago and it was deep snow all the way, could barely find the track and the grate was covered which was fun lol. It was snowing on Kosciuszko summit and 0 visibility. Everyone at home said I was crazy, but its one if the most awesome experiences! The absolute white, blue sky which was dynamic and changed to mist a few times, the peacefulness, snow flaking around. Its amazing.
by far one of ur best vlogs, beautifully filmed and felt a little spiritual. I could not help thinking about my cousin who climbed Mt Augustus in Western Australia a few years ago and she died with her husband so tragically from the heat and exhaustion. I am glad you both made it and showed me something I’d never seen, itwas truly beautiful. Thank you both ❤️
If others are doing the hike I would highly recommend going via The Charlottes Pass route! No lift fees, and it’s a really scenic route! I went via the lift route back in school, and again recently via charlottes pass with a friend visiting Australia from the UK!

The person who spoke to you was right, nobody does that in winter ... even though winter is only officially 6 days old😂 Although Kosciuszko is not very tall by world standards the weather up there is very changeable at very short notice. You did very well. Congratulations; you've done what very few Australians have done! Crossing the Nullarbor is in that category too. You've set a high batting average! The name of the mountain can be pronounced two ways : Kozzi-oskko ... as most of us pronounce it or, Koshi-ush-ko if you try to put a bit of a Polish inflection on it. There is some discussion about what the Indigenous name is. Kunama Namadgi seems to have some consensus ; pronounced Koo-narma Nuh-madge-ii. It means snow and mountains - or snowy mountains.
Yeah, the other indigenous names associated with the area are Jagungal, Jar-gan-gil, Tar-gan-gi and Tackingal. These are all related to the Bogong Moth, as the local peoples would congregate in the area to feast on them.
@@barnowl5774 Yes, hence the discussion on what indigenous name should be used, as they only had a name for the region (as far as anyone knows), not the individual peaks. If they did have individual names, they have been lost, with the possible exception of Mt Townsend - Targangil (one reference in a letter).
Oh I'm so glad you're coming to Canberra! For a cheap feed there's an iconic kebab shop at Yarralumla shops with kebabs that weigh 1kg, you could easily share one. Soo good! Make sure you visit the arboretum too. Lonsdale Street in Braddon with a rainbow roundabout. There's so much to see here!
Great place in summer also, the alpine wilderness areas provide so many options for hiking/bushwalking, camping, mountain biking etc, and the rivers are crystal clear and ice cold from the snow melt.

Looks like you had an amazing experience! However, it's always a good idea to be prepared (i.e. dressed, equipped) for any possible weather condition when entering an alpine environment, no matter the season... Not trying to lecture you, just want you to stay safe. 🏔⛰❤
As an Australian, a Melburnian to be specific, there is no way I would ever freeze my arse off walking up to that summit, so thank you for doing it for me. It looks beautiful. Proud of both of you and glad you enjoyed it.
Nearly all Aussies have been taught to mispronounce Mt Kosciusko. It's not "Cozzy oss ko". It's "Koz chooss ko". I know this because I'm of Polish descent. Also, it might interest you (or not😅) that Tadeusz Kościuszko was a Polish military commander that is revered in many countries, from France, Lithuania, Poland and the USA. He fought for the American Revolutionary side in the war for independence from Britain, and against Russian oppression in Poland, Belarus and Lithuania. Legend! Cheveyo! What you're wearing is a pair of what we Aussies call "ankle freezers". Just thought you should know.😊

I am an Aussie, and that was amazing! I've never done this walk. It has its own beauty, doesn't it? I could feel your excitement and natural enthusiasm. You two really remind me of my partner at the time, and I, when we were your age. (47 now). We climbed up Ben Nevis in Scotland, also a small giant, when we were round about your ages. The excitement you showed just took me right back there! Thankyou for your wonderful filming. You have helped inspire me to do this walk too! I hope you are coming up to North Queensland in your travels.
A part of Australia we love - and now you have made us want to go back sooner rather than later!! Especially in a shoulder season. I am glad the weather did not deteriorate on you.
FYI it's the tallest mountain on the mainland of Australia. There are a couple of islands south-west of the mainland that are taller (plus they are the only currently active volcanos in Aus), plus technically some mountains in the Australian section of Antarctica are higher as well. Search for Heard Island.
Awesome vlog, well done. I love it when people overseas mention that Australia's "Alps" are quite small; There's almost always an Aussie nearby who will say "Yeh, well they used to be a lot bigger though". I also love the way you two appreciate raw beauty. ❤
The view of the Kosciuszko Range from the west is amazing; the escarpment drops straight over and has more of a true 'Alps' look to it. However the mountains in Tasmania are even more spectacular in winter. It's hard to believe but people have perished in blizzards and avalanches in the Australian Alps. The coldest temperature in Australia was recorded at Charlotte's Pass in the Snowy Mountains: minus 24 C in 1994.
Tia and Cheveyo, absolutely amazing footage, and beautifully described. You remind us so much of Heidi and I starting over 40 years ago to travel. The Alps are beautiful and you presented Thredbo perfectly, its certainly changed from when we used to ski there in the 70's. Keep travelling safe and giving us wonderful views of the Antipodes 😎😎🤙🤙
The gravel path you were walking on (after the grates finished at Rawson Pass) is actually the pavement of Kosciuszko Road, which runs all the way from Cooma to the top of the mountain. First time I went up there, I got to the top and was feeling rather accomplished when the ranger rolled up in his car and kinda deflated the whole experience.. :) These days, only authorised vehicles are allowed to drive past Charlotte Pass, but up until about 1980, anyone could drive to the top.
Ski season starts this weekend - doesn’t look promising this year. I think last year there was quite a heavy coverage by this time. Thank you for showing the world we actually have different climates! We’ve been reasonably tectonically stable for quite a while (in human terms, not that long geologically), so our mountains are very old and weathered. Which makes them extremely dangerous and easy to get lost in. That catches locals as well as tourists. The Dandenong Ranges, where you were staying before, are technically not real mountains - they’re the eroded remains of the edge of a massive super volcano caldera. Most of the eastern part of Australia is littered with ancient calderas.
It is fascinating how Australia is so tectonically stable when it is so (relatively) close to the tectonic Ring of Fire. We spoke with a few Thredbo residents and it seems the outlook for this season is bleak, as you say. If it were any colder, we would’ve been priced out of the whole hike as it would’ve required proper gear.
Speaking of calderas, I expect that Tia and Cheveyo will blow through the Tweed Valley on their way from Sydney to Brisbane, and hope they take in a view of Mount Warning from the rim of the Tweed Caldera. There is a certain something about a volcanic caldera forty kilometres across.
@@OnePackWanderersyea i live coffs harbour and east of the hinterlands which is north nsw and goes into qld a bit, but the hinterlands snows every year and by mid may. No snow so far even though it did hit -10 out west, hit 0 in coffs harbour. Last year we got -4.5 on the East Coast!!!!! It usually does snow around, orange and goulburn canberra armidale and all that. This year has been boring. And 2 days ago there was a blizzard on the mountains, it snowed close to melbourne, ballarat, canberra and alot of those high places.

Thank you for showcasing a special part of Australia. It's what I've associated Australia all my life, having lived in this region. You really did a great job capturing the Main Range just at the start of the snow season, which Kosci is on. The second highest mountain is Mt Townsend which you can see from Kosci is technically harder to walk up as it's like a massive boulder has been smashed on top. Love the Snowies. Fun fact, the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere is Perisher which is only like 20ks from where you were as the crow flies.
When I went in September, the entire village and cable cart area was covered in a snow and a heavy blizzard, I would’ve killed for the weather you got 😂
Good job guys walking up Mt Kosciuszko (pronounced as ko si oz ko) during winter. Australian alps are generally windy on one side because there is no nearby mountains to block the wind 😁 We also get more wild weather in Winter - South East anyways. If/when you make your way to Hobart, Tasmania, be sure to go Mt Wellington. It may be lower than Mt Kosciuszho but it's colder and windier even in Summer 😄
I remember when I was a kid, that was a few years ago, Mum and Dad drove me and my brother up to the "base of Kosciuszko and we only had to walk up maybe a hundred metres to the top.

Thredbo has a special place in my heart. My now fiancé, was going to propose to me at the top of the ski lift but he got nervous because there was too many people. I’m glad he didn’t because I wouldn’t have wanted every one watching me 😂 He later did proposed at the cabin we were staying in. It was much more romantic beside a fire.
I love that walk, both when there is a lot more snow than this, but also in summer when there is only small patches of snow in the places that never get direct sun. Those alpine meadows and rocks can look quite surreal in summer. That lake in summer is gorgeous. That whole Kosciusko plateau and peak have so many moods and it is stunningly beautiful up there. I too have slipped and slid down a icy rocky scree close to Thredbo. Not my idea of fun.
Such a great Vlog and great memories for me. I did that walk at Easter in 1985. The snow was on the Mountain and surrounds and it was a sunny day. Beautiful countryside with massive boulders. Had the pleasure of working in Thredbo in my 20's for a Snow Season and my boyfriend worked at Chalotttes Pass. He walked over the mountains to see me and got lost in a snow storm. Fortunately he was rescued and arrived via helicopter to Thredbo. Love was grand then. Enjoy our beautiful country!

The temperature and weather up the top of the mountains can change dramatically (and dangerously) in a very short time! You might notice how a lot of the trees on the skyline around Thredbo don't have any leaves. These are not deciduous trees losing their leaves in winter - it is the result of the huge bushfires in January 2020 which burnt everything. However gum trees can often regrow from the burnt trunks, but the tall limbs stay bare. So instead of being a totally dead landscape, many of the trees are still alive.
Well done guys, you never quit! What a great achievement and another unique experience to include in your mature age storybook - no socks, no gloves! I went to Thredbo in ski season once with some friends, the slippery ski lift was enough excitement for me, and I've never been back! Really looking forward to your next Aussie adventure! 🤗👍

Great footage, looks amazing that time of year, me personally would of taken extra gear, can get extremely dangerous up there very quickly. Thredbo is also a huge mountain bike park in summer.

You two have done better than we did! We tried to get there but only made it to the top of the chairlift because the weather was atrocious, and that was in summer! January 2016 to be precise. We had the then 10 year old with us though, and didn’t want to do anything stupid. We waited for a while in the cafe to see if it would clear, but it wasn’t to be. Back down we went.
I never imagined climbing Mt. Kosciuszko could be a possible goal for me. But judging by this video it seems rather achievable. Even if it's not the hardest hike, the bragging rights and the sense of accomplishment is greater motivation in my mind than the idea of hiking what might be a longer and more challenging trail somewhere else. Now I just need to get back in shape.

Wow, you are at Thredbo.. Many years ago there was a landslide at Thredbo. A lot of the resort buildings were demolished. Many people did not survive. The lone survivor was Stuart Diver. Sad story. His wife did not survive.
Great video! Thanks for showing us the scenery. When I was little (a long time ago) we drove to the summit. I think the road went from Charlotte Pass to Mount Kosciuszko, but was long ago closed and turned into a walking trail. (PS I hope you’re coming up to the Blue Mountains, where I live.)
You are spot on with th difficulty of pronunciation. Traditionally, many Australians have used 4 syllables, something like cos-see-oz-ko but the Polish explorer's name was only three. Something like co-shoe-sko
Really admired your dedication and courage to have hiked that far with not very protective warm clothing and foot wear 😂 I felt cold in my feet when I watched you walk! I have done higher altitude in the Himalayas but poked holes on my ankle high trekking boots with the terrain so really worried about your very simple urban foot wear. Awesome video guys. My ex-gf from Wisconsin found it hilarious we "go to the snow". My family always went to the other resort in Perisher. It could be argued its cheaper to fly and ski in NZ (Not now NZ expensive also)or Korea than the two major ski fields of Australia. Well done you've have achieved more than most Aussies including myself.
Great video. Im a 42 Aussie and only just summited Kosi last weekend. I rode my bike as far as you're allowed. And had to walk the last 1.5ks. It was definitely worth it.
Here's a little fact for you. I worked with a Polish guy and this mountain came up in conversation and I called it Kosiosco (the way we pronounce it) and he said it's actually Koshoosco (the Polish pronunciation)
You guys are awesome. I've done Kosi in summer and the views were spectacular, so sad you couldn't see that, but what an experience in part-snow!! In another couple of months you would have been proper-expedition hiking through a mountain of snow. Can't believe you did this without proper jackets!!
Done that walk quite a few times, always enjoy it. I remember walking back down that hill under the ski lift you took up after a week long hike through the national park on the far side of Kosciuszko. I still get a laugh from the fact that there's a paved path to the top of the highest mountain on the continent.

In winter proper, the middle of winter, all the ground including down to the village would be covered in snow. Magic.
Snow season hasn't really hit yet, but shouldn't be far off. Kosciuszko National Park is a beautiful place....Great video guys as always!

There is some discussion about what the Indigenous name is. Kunama Namadgi seems to have some consensus ; pronounced Koo-narma Nuh-madge-ii. It means snow and mountains - or snowy mountains.
As far as I know, Mt Kosciusko never had a specific Indigenous name. It was just one of the mountains.

Yeah, the other indigenous names associated with the area are Jagungal, Jar-gan-gil, Tar-gan-gi and Tackingal. These are all related to the Bogong Moth, as the local peoples would congregate in the area to feast on them.

If they did have individual names, they have been lost, with the possible exception of Mt Townsend - Targangil (one reference in a letter).
Like Mount Wellington (Kunanyi), it might seem mild and not windy, until you get to the top!
Its an amazing walk, but don't underestimate it... especially in winter.
Oh I'm so glad you're coming to Canberra! For a cheap feed there's an iconic kebab shop at Yarralumla shops with kebabs that weigh 1kg, you could easily share one. Soo good!
Make sure you visit the arboretum too. Lonsdale Street in Braddon with a rainbow roundabout. There's so much to see here!
Great place in summer also, the alpine wilderness areas provide so many options for hiking/bushwalking, camping, mountain biking etc, and the rivers are crystal clear and ice cold from the snow melt.

As an Australian, a Melburnian to be specific, there is no way I would ever freeze my arse off walking up to that summit, so thank you for doing it for me. It looks beautiful. Proud of both of you and glad you enjoyed it.

Nearly all Aussies have been taught to mispronounce Mt Kosciusko. It's not "Cozzy oss ko". It's "Koz chooss ko". I know this because I'm of Polish descent.
Also, it might interest you (or not😅) that Tadeusz Kościuszko was a Polish military commander that is revered in many countries, from France, Lithuania, Poland and the USA. He fought for the American Revolutionary side in the war for independence from Britain, and against Russian oppression in Poland, Belarus and Lithuania. Legend!

You two really remind me of my partner at the time, and I, when we were your age. (47 now). We climbed up Ben Nevis in Scotland, also a small giant, when we were round about your ages. The excitement you showed just took me right back there! Thankyou for your wonderful filming. You have helped inspire me to do this walk too! FYI it's the tallest mountain on the mainland of Australia. There are a couple of islands south-west of the mainland that are taller (plus they are the only currently active volcanos in Aus), plus technically some mountains in the Australian section of Antarctica are higher as well. Search for Heard Island.

The view of the Kosciuszko Range from the west is amazing; the escarpment drops straight over and has more of a true 'Alps' look to it. However the mountains in Tasmania are even more spectacular in winter. It's hard to believe but people have perished in blizzards and avalanches in the Australian Alps. The coldest temperature in Australia was recorded at Charlotte's Pass in the Snowy Mountains: minus 24 C in 1994.
Tia and Cheveyo, absolutely amazing footage, and beautifully described. You remind us so much of Heidi and I starting over 40 years ago to travel. The Alps are beautiful and you presented Thredbo perfectly, its certainly changed from when we used to ski there in the 70's.

The gravel path you were walking on (after the grates finished at Rawson Pass) is actually the pavement of Kosciuszko Road, which runs all the way from Cooma to the top of the mountain.
First time I went up there, I got to the top and was feeling rather accomplished when the ranger rolled up in his car and kinda deflated the whole experience.. :)
These days, only authorised vehicles are allowed to drive past Charlotte Pass, but up until about 1980, anyone could drive to the top.
Ski season starts this weekend - doesn’t look promising this year. I think last year there was quite a heavy coverage by this time.
Thank you for showing the world we actually have different climates! We’ve been reasonably tectonically stable for quite a while (in human terms, not that long geologically), so our mountains are very old and weathered. Which makes them extremely dangerous and easy to get lost in. That catches locals as well as tourists.
The Dandenong Ranges, where you were staying before, are technically not real mountains - they’re the eroded remains of the edge of a massive super volcano caldera. Most of the eastern part of Australia is littered with ancient calderas.
It is fascinating how Australia is so tectonically stable when it is so (relatively) close to the tectonic Ring of Fire.
We spoke with a few Thredbo residents and it seems the outlook for this season is bleak, as you say. If it were any colder, we would’ve been priced out of the whole hike as it would’ve required proper gear.
Speaking of calderas, I expect that Tia and Cheveyo will blow through the Tweed Valley on their way from Sydney to Brisbane, and hope they take in a view of Mount Warning from the rim of the Tweed Caldera. There is a certain something about a volcanic caldera forty kilometres across.
@@OnePackWanderersyea i live coffs harbour and east of the hinterlands which is north nsw and goes into qld a bit, but the hinterlands snows every year and by mid may. No snow so far even though it did hit -10 out west, hit 0 in coffs harbour. Last year we got -4.5 on the East Coast!!!!! It usually does snow around, orange and goulburn canberra armidale and all that. This year has been boring. And 2 days ago there was a blizzard on the mountains, it snowed close to melbourne, ballarat, canberra and alot of those high places.

You really did a great job capturing the Main Range just at the start of the snow season, which Kosci is on.
The second highest mountain is Mt Townsend which you can see from Kosci is technically harder to walk up as it's like a massive boulder has been smashed on top.

Fun fact, the largest ski resort in the southern hemisphere is Perisher which is only like 20ks from where you were as the crow flies.
When I went in September, the entire village and cable cart area was covered in a snow and a heavy blizzard, I would’ve killed for the weather you got 😂
Good job guys walking up Mt Kosciuszko (pronounced as ko si oz ko) during winter. Australian alps are generally windy on one side because there is no nearby mountains to block the wind 😁 We also get more wild weather in Winter - South East anyways.
If/when you make your way to Hobart, Tasmania, be sure to go Mt Wellington. It may be lower than Mt Kosciuszho but it's colder and windier even in Summer 😄
I remember when I was a kid, that was a few years ago, Mum and Dad drove me and my brother up to the "base of Kosciuszko and we only had to walk up maybe a hundred metres to the top.

Thredbo has a special place in my heart. My now fiancé, was going to propose to me at the top of the ski lift but he got nervous because there was too many people. I’m glad he didn’t because I wouldn’t have wanted every one watching me 😂 He later did proposed at the cabin we were staying in. It was much more romantic beside a fire.
I love that walk, both when there is a lot more snow than this, but also in summer when there is only small patches of snow in the places that never get direct sun. Those alpine meadows and rocks can look quite surreal in summer. That lake in summer is gorgeous. That whole Kosciusko plateau and peak have so many moods and it is stunningly beautiful up there.
I too have slipped and slid down a icy rocky scree close to Thredbo. Not my idea of fun.
Such a great Vlog and great memories for me. I did that walk at Easter in 1985. The snow was on the Mountain and surrounds and it was a sunny day. Beautiful countryside with massive boulders. Had the pleasure of working in Thredbo in my 20's for a Snow Season and my boyfriend worked at Chalotttes Pass. He walked over the mountains to see me and got lost in a snow storm. Fortunately he was rescued and arrived via helicopter to Thredbo. Love was grand then. Enjoy our beautiful country!

they are called the Snowy Mountains some call them the alps to make it sound high when they really are just big ant mounds.

The temperature and weather up the top of the mountains can change dramatically (and dangerously) in a very short time!
You might notice how a lot of the trees on the skyline around Thredbo don't have any leaves. These are not deciduous trees losing their leaves in winter - it is the result of the huge bushfires in January 2020 which burnt everything. However gum trees can often regrow from the burnt trunks, but the tall limbs stay bare. So instead of being a totally dead landscape, many of the trees are still alive.

Great footage, looks amazing that time of year, me personally would of taken extra gear, can get extremely dangerous up there very quickly. Thredbo is also a huge mountain bike park in summer.

You two have done better than we did! We tried to get there but only made it to the top of the chairlift because the weather was atrocious, and that was in summer! January 2016 to be precise. We had the then 10 year old with us though, and didn’t want to do anything stupid. We waited for a while in the cafe to see if it would clear, but it wasn’t to be. Back down we went.

I never imagined climbing Mt. Kosciuszko could be a possible goal for me. But judging by this video it seems rather achievable. Even if it's not the hardest hike, the bragging rights and the sense of accomplishment is greater motivation in my mind than the idea of hiking what might be a longer and more challenging trail somewhere else. Now I just need to get back in shape.

Wow, you are at Thredbo.. Many years ago there was a landslide at Thredbo. A lot of the resort buildings were demolished. Many people did not survive. The lone survivor was Stuart Diver. Sad story. His wife did not survive.

Great video! Thanks for showing us the scenery. When I was little (a long time ago) we drove to the summit. I think the road went from Charlotte Pass to Mount Kosciuszko, but was long ago closed and turned into a walking trail. (PS I hope you’re coming up to the Blue Mountains, where I live.)
You are spot on with th difficulty of pronunciation. Traditionally, many Australians have used 4 syllables, something like cos-see-oz-ko but the Polish explorer's name was only three. Something like co-shoe-sko
Really admired your dedication and courage to have hiked that far with not very protective warm clothing and foot wear 😂 I felt cold in my feet when I watched you walk! I have done higher altitude in the Himalayas but poked holes on my ankle high trekking boots with the terrain so really worried about your very simple urban foot wear. Really relieved that you did it and the sceneries were amazing too ❤

Awesome video guys. My ex-gf from Wisconsin found it hilarious we "go to the snow". My family always went to the other resort in Perisher. It could be argued its cheaper to fly and ski in NZ (Not now NZ expensive also)or Korea than the two major ski fields of Australia. Well done you've have achieved more than most Aussies including myself.
I have not been to the summit since 1997, i've been to the snow every year since... but yeah, havent hit the tip for some time
Great video. Im a 42 Aussie and only just summited Kosi last weekend. I rode my bike as far as you're allowed. And had to walk the last 1.5ks. It was definitely worth it.

Here's a little fact for you. I worked with a Polish guy and this mountain came up in conversation and I called it Kosiosco (the way we pronounce it) and he said it's actually Koshoosco (the Polish pronunciation)
I walked this with my daughter in 2016. A little tiring but very satisfying.
You guys are awesome. I've done Kosi in summer and the views were spectacular, so sad you couldn't see that, but what an experience in part-snow!! In another couple of months you would have been proper-expedition hiking through a mountain of snow.

Done that walk quite a few times, always enjoy it. I remember walking back down that hill under the ski lift you took up after a week long hike through the national park on the far side of Kosciuszko. I still get a laugh from the fact that there's a paved path to the top of the highest mountain on the continent.
