Very impressive acceleration for such an old car! It’s faster than the 2021 Elantra that MotorWeek just tested. Mazda has always done “small” very, very well and a lot of people have forgotten just how good the Protege really was. Even Toyota-infatuated Consumer Reports was enamored with the Protege, making the 3rd gen their top-rated small car throughout the late-90s and early-00s.

5:00 There was absolutely no reason for MW to be expecting a car in this class or of this size to offer a driver airbag in 1989, let alone a passenger airbag! I don’t even think the midsize segment even offered dual airbags until 2 years after this (Taurus) and compact segment in late 1992 via the Civic EX. Audi, BMW, Benz, Cadillac, Lexus, and Infiniti compacts didn’t either. Seems like John/MW liked to nitpick Asian imports for things that they didn’t with domestic competition. Why wasn’t this brought up in 1989-93 segments for GM and Chrysler products?

Compared to overweight cars of today.. this is fast!
3:50 Impressive for its time 🔥
I miss my acid-washed jeans. Sadly, no one else does.
I miss acid, sadly the voices in my do not.
The will. They will. To both of you....but only to you. LOL
I think I had a rugby shirt just like one in the vid, too.
Powerful engine and exellent gearing on the manual transmission makes those great 0 to 60 mph numbers!!
Damn what a great lil machine.
Didn't these have an issue with the 4-speed automatics
