After deliberating over tripods, a monopod with a gimbal head, I bought the Peak Design Travel tripod. Fits in the water bottle sleeve of my backpack, inconspicuous and sensible on public city transportation. Great tips for this amateur. Thank you.
Hugh, just stumbled upon this video. I would like to make a few observations 1. Travel doesn't always mean liteweight. I've encountered many cases of shooting in conditions where the tripod had to be massive to withstand wind, sand shifting and so forth, and the weight of adding sand bags is not taken into account for the tripod rating. Suddenly you end up with 20 lb of sand on a tripod rated for 12lb, because your gear is just 3lb :) 2. L Bracket. Priceless. 3. Quick release lever (Acratech, RRS) is also priceless. and secure... no more twisting and letting go of the camera and finding out you clamped down on air rather than on your camera.. 4. The correct ballhead and legs selection. 5. The most important observation - get the correct tool for the job under the existing limitations. I have a liteweight sirui tripod (1.5lb) which can fit anywhere, and his bigger brother who can carry anything. PD makes a nice travel tripod, but it's not the one ring to rule them all, and please, do not try to stand in the Icelandic winds with it.. even though you are traveling :)
Hugh! Hope you and Claudia are staying safe and sound during the challenges. Enjoyed the video and will say, though I am not using Peak Design, I do shoot with tripods all the time for the very reasons you've covered. Matter of fact, had two cameras set up this evening on tripods to photograph the Super Pink Moonrise. Although, I do have to work and educate myself on my low light time lapse photography. In due time of course. Keep up the good work and you guys stay safe.
Hi Hugh. I just love your presentation style. It makes me miss New York (I was born in Doctor's Hospital). Your videos are very provocative - in a good sense. Glad you and your family are OK. Stuck in a photographic wasteland....
I noticed that B&H will not be shipping during passover. They also stated that they wouldn't be billing accounts until the product shipped. I wonder if that would exclude the funds from the "7th to 10th" window
Hi Hugh, always watch your channel and commentary on street photography. Leica is tattoo to my heart and I would not hesitate to stand by the brand. Love peak design stuff, camera straps and bags, heck I own two of their bags. But this tripod at $799 Canadian dollars! Sorry man I can’t justify for a travel tripod. Appreciate what peak design is doing, very generous, 100% of the proceeds, wow! Thanks mate.
How does it compare to the FLM CP26 or Gitzo? In particular, how stable is it and how well does the ball head lock compared to those models? Does it shift the framing slightly after you lock it? Does the center column wobble if fully extended?
A major problem with travel tripods is that they are low - mostly around 130cm w/o center column. It would be nice to see them gain 15-30cm w/o center column so that longer people don‘t have to break their back to use them.
Not only do I like your videos for the content, but also as an advanced English course. Just looked up "epiphany" :-) And your statement regarding the size of the camera and every peace of equipment that follows is really fundamental! However, when choosing my tripod I decided to leave some room for improvement on the camera side - or just call it "stability reserve".
I use a travel tripod for ND shots and timelapse video. Been using the Manfrotto BeFree as it slips right into its carrying space on the Manfrotto camera pack. All works well with a very small/lightweight Canon M6mk2. Good travel setup - just no place I can go right now. 😕 Our hearts go out to the people of NYC. We're relatively safe and comfortable here on the Oregon coast - the beaches are deserted even with the improving weather. Stay safe.
I shoot live music videography (shows) there is two of us running 7 cameras. This allows is to cut in many views . Without tripods (mechanical hands) we wouldn’t be able to run this many cameras. I am running a handheld stage cam with a SteadyCam vest and arm adapted (modified) to hold a Moza Air ii with a Nikon d850 or d500 with Atomos recorder . The other man on a camera with telephoto zoom lens also capturing action . Tripods are a necessity and we do interviews also of the bands . Again a must . Will Peak Design be making this design in larger formats. This design shouldn’t be pigeonholed into just a travel tripod.
There is 0.6lb or 0.29kg difference in the weights of the alumin(i)um and carbon fibre models, yet an eye-watering $250 price difference. Are there any other differences we should know about? Thanks for a great video, as always.
Lee Hammond Carbon dampens vibrations better so the upcharge is most likely because of this not their cost to manufacture. Carbon sells because of this and they know they’ll make better profits
hello Hugh, nice to see you There is so much sad news from the most beautiful city in the world. 😢😢 The thing has been ordered and will come tomorrow and I am really looking forward to it. In connection with the S1R it is a great thing. I will report. In addition, peak design donates for a great purpose. Hopefully many buy. I wish you both the best and please - please stay healthy. GREETINGS Frank Berlin
Truth be told, although a "gear" one, I rushed to the video (and liked it, as usual) out of a bit of worrying about your health. The news coming from New York are depressing. Not to mention the ones coming out of Italy. I already have lost people I knew... Take care!
Thank you for your kind words. “Fortunately” (and I can only hope that the quotation marks will convey enough of my self-disdain for the use of the word), my losses are still “contained” in mere acquaintances. They were however loved ones for people that I care about… Please, everybody, when this nightmare is over, come to Lombardy. Take a tour of the Alpine roads over Bergamo, spend a couple of days in the lakes there, just do anything that will help the people there to put their lives backs together. You take care too.
My canon 1d mark iiis had illuminated buttons. One of the best features of that camera
I wish all of my cameras had illuminated buttons!
The generosity of Peak Design speaks volumes of their integrity. I am a current customer and now will always be.

Which tripod do you suggest?
This video is a joy to watch. This also just validated the price of this tripod for me. Thank you!
My pleasure!
For a center weight, a tent peg and some para cord works very well
I like it!

Need new gear? (Travel tripod in my case) Well, seems like I gotta binge watch Hugh, Claudia and Kai W for days 😂 Great content as always Hugh!

Zachary Bennett great question. Wish I had an answer.
Peak design - I love you.
Thanks for this video. can you please tell me what is the fluid head name shown in your video?
Great to see you with the PeakDesign travel tripod 👍
Can you do top down for unboxings with this tripod?

Great and interesting video. It is very pleasant to hear when you speak. You could have been an adventure storyteller. Thanks.
I own the PD tripod. It's outstanding. One tip: take the supplied toolkit of the leg or mouse it on. Already had to replace mine.
Yes TAPE the tool to the leg - i lost mine on the first trip out - good place to put some gaffers tape

Casper Pedersen I understand.
Love, man. Just love. And you know why I’m saying it.
You said! it. Be safe my friends.
🥰
a question come always to mind when i see a peack design tripod video. Can i just extend middle section of one leg, middle or little more ?

@@3BMEP "piece" for everybody :-)
Nikon D850, D500, D5 and ... ... ... D6 have it, illuminated buttons. I am not sure about D4.

I wanna know lol, I still use film cameras and Dslrs with no IBIS.
I’m 6’4” with knee problems. This is just too short to use comfortably.
AlergicToSnow Fair enough!
Ordered mine.

I ditched my ball heads in favor of video heads. So much easier!
Thanks for the video, I have 2 Peak Design straps and a capture clip, do love their products, £500 for the carbon though.
jeg569 I hear you.

Frank Berlin you too, Frank! 😊
Night photography is another use case or was I not listening?
Arnold Klein You’re right of course, and I do indeed show that.
@@3BMEP That will teach me to watch a vid after drinking my dinner... nicely detailed review of tripod use.

Hey Hugh...you could have a second career in ASMR.
