    Interesting looking gouger. Nice Oboist’s in sound track, and music selection. My dad taught harmony at Yale as a piano student, Paul Hindemith was his professor and he graduated in 3 years. So I was turning pages for him at the age of eight years old and listening to our own(dads)concert grand Steinway and Sons 1965 concert D. I started playing oboe when I was 10 so I became a very good sight reader. My dad and I loved to play the Schumann three romances together.

    this vid scared me so much. im a sax player i just learned that oboe reeds are so much complicated than sax's

    • @tomlindemuth9571

      I am a sax and oboe player... sax is so much simpler than oboe, but some people take that as saxaphones are easyer and other things. Truth be told yes the oboe is harder to learn and master, but with the sax you can do so many things scince you can learn it faster

    • @rielzuad7028
      @rielzuad7028 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      i think neither is easier or harder. sax weighs so much than oboe... specially tenor and bari. also sax is a lot louder making practice unbearable for neighbors. carrying a sax to a gig is also a bit difficult. I play sax cause i like how it sounds not because its harder or easier to play compared to other instruments.

      @@rielzuad7028 To be fair sax players get to wear a neck strap, the oboe isn't heavy but it does wear you down in a concert

    • @oboe15jf
      @oboe15jf 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It kind of grows back some tenths, because the wood becomes slightly bigger and then you loose the flexibility of the reed

    So not only do the oboes cost thousands of dollars, one also needs to buy all these bloody bits of equipment to make the reeds with as well! This has to be the most expensive and troublesome instrument in existence.

    What is the purpose of the wire?

    • @nomorebushz
      @nomorebushz 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      2Netsrak2 there may be two fundamental purposes for a wire. One is that it can help, if necessary, if the sides are leaking, which when tied properly rarely is a problem. Number two reason, Is to help adjust the opening of the aperture whether it is too closed or too open. The gauge of wire must be thick enough to help control one way or the other, gently with pliers. I have tied thousands of reeds and have never needed a wire on my oboe reeds. A wire is almost a requirement for English Horn reeds.
      Lastly... I do tie slightly shorter than 74 mm. If it’s tied at 75 mm you are toying with the sides of the reeds not sealing properly where of course the wire would help. Maybe the strategy would be that you have a reeds with some extra vibrancy when the blades don’t overlap each other so much.
      Feedback on my opinion would most certainly be welcome. Hopefully you enjoy tedious tasks for worthwhile results.

      @nomorebushz 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could teach a 4-year-old to tie an oboe reed, but that doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t leak or become a cracked reed even before the scrape. Pride is not the same demeanor as humility, and oh so typical. :)
