I am currently writing an undergraduate essay for my advanced ethnomusicology module, that asks me to choose a musical instrument from anywhere in the world and discuss its construction, playing technique(s), history, symbolism and extra musical associations. as a bass player i thought it'd be easy work, but there's such a lack of knowledge and writing on the instrument and it's importance in all the musical contexts and traditions it is found in. so I really relate to Brian's comment that he was surprised to find no such comprehensive cultural history of the instrument! his book is a great help but I wish there was more study of the instrument as it relates to the widespread but understated cultural importance of bass guitar playing. amazing interview though, thanks for putting this up!
Thanks, Will. Good luck with your essay!
Ordering the book now from your link. A book that had to happen. Great interview, as always!
👍 You’ll love the book!
I just got a copy of the book and am really looking forward to getting into it. Thanks for this interview!
You’ll love it! Glad you liked the interview. Thanks.
More things to learn about bass other than playing it and probably could make a difference in the way one could approach it. Was surprised to hear he is from Syracuse which I’m often there living only 30 minutes away. Interesting interview, thanks Jon.
Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Good book I am reading it now! I am a guitar player but very interesting info in this book.
Great book. Well written and meticulously researched. Thanks!
what an interesting book. please, can you tell Brian that if anytime he wants to translate it to Spanish, I will be glad to work with him.
I bet there’d be some demand for that. Thanks, Albert!
