- This week is the beginning of our last quarter, and with that comes the beginning of new units in both of my classes - fun and exciting, but also pretty exhausting to present all new content! Here is how I introduced my 9th grade classes to the context surrounding To Kill A Mockingbird, along with some great resources for teaching with that text! Enjoy!

I just did a Mockingbird / Research writing unit with my freshmen, and we watched the brand new Crash Course: Navigating Digital Information videos for our research unit. We had lots of other things going on, including the Covington High School D.C. incident, but mostly we learned a great deal about research through those videos.

I’m a freshman and We just got done reading To Kill A Mockingbird, now we are reading Shakespeare :)
No wonder the students are bouncing off the walls!!!
While I don’t think you’re desecrating the classics, it does make me a little sad that they won’t read the entire novel. It’s one of my absolute favorite books and I would probably never had read it if I hadn’t been assigned to during high school.
I love what you did with the stations! What do you do about kids who work at different paces though? I have a couple of kids who take years to do any task and anytime we try to do stations, they only half-finish them
I’m not sure if you do this but another helpful tip is sharing what was going on in your own state or city during that period to help students see it’s a national issue.
I'm working on becoming a teacher and I'm not sure which subject I want to go into. Mostly science or math for middle or high school. I have no urge to do anything in literature, but omg you get me so excited about things it makes me reconsider it.

Know of any free online assessments of reading levels? I'm not an ELA teacher, but I want to differentiate the text I use in my class more accurately.
"Spring Break" here in Massachusetts (called April Vacation) starts week after next, if that makes you feel any better, haha.
