A blown head gasket was one of the rights of passage when owning this generation of Grand AM. I came out of class one morning to a sticky note on my window saying “all of your antifreeze is on the ground under your car.” Other than that, these things were super dependable. I loved mine (96 GT 4 door). Bought it when I was a senior in high school.
This car brings back memories. Back in 2001. I was 21 years old at the time and this was my first used car I've bought. It was loaded just like this one, but mine was the color green, had perferated 6 way power leather seats, and a sunroof. And I thought it had 150 hp and 155 lbs ft torque from the 3100 engine. That I still owed a 1987 Grand Am LE with the infamous 2.5 Iron Duke engine at the time. My late uncle had a red 1997 Grand Am GT coupe with the 2.4 Quad 4 engine with manual windows and a sunroof, weird to see.
I use to have a Green 96 GT 2dr back in High School. Man this video brings back memories. Use to beat the snot out of it. That 3.1 V6 pulled quite nice. The worst part about these cars were the firewall. They were so rust prone, mine looked like Swiss cheese and leaked water like you wouldn’t believe.
ahhh my mother drove one of these in the 90s! GT Sedan 3100 V6 .. memories of her roaring into town on the back roads blasting RHCP in the CD player. We rolled it in a ditch in december of 2000 and replaced it with the next gen Grand-Am GT.
My favorite memory with my uncle includes a 98 grand am. He had a sound system in it and played head strong by trapt and we were headbanging the whole time.
5:01 - You forgot to mention those 6x9 speakers on that parcel shelf that 1) hit rather hard, and 2) deafened anyone sitting back there while driving. 😂
I only remember two things: the 6x9s were way louder than anything else at that price back then and the throttle response from a stop was over the top aggressive.
Indeed. This car was very much of the time when 100,000 trouble-free miles on a US make was a big deal. By that milestone, my '94 (all the same mechanicals as this '98) needed 2 transmission rebuilds. The engine fared better, though. It died at 160K+ miles.
Back in the mid late 90s I worked at a Pontiac dealership. Great memories. I used to sign off on these coming in off the truck. I can still remember the way these smelled when new. (Kind of a sweet savoury scent) I thought these felt really fast and smooth too ❤❤❤
Same here. I drove these off the Conrail railroad train before delivery to the dealership in New Jersey in 1995 when I was 19 years old. Most times, they were only built 9 days before....They sold like hot cakes ...
I wouldn’t compare the G5 with the grand am, grand am was a larger car class. G5 was a revised sunfire, Chevy cobalt, cavalier. The grand am was a step up on the size and price scale. Isn’t the G6 basically the successor to the grand am? Also.. does the first cup holder maybe have a removable rubber liner? If it does, maybe a chance the big bottle would fit?
I learned how to drive and took my road test in a 1992 Grand Am, and a friend in college had a 1996 model. This was in 1997. Nowadays, you hardly see them, especially if you live where they put salt on the roads, so that's an awesome find.
What a great car. I used to have a white Grand Am G/T Ram Air; two scoops on the hood, lots of comfort, LOTS of power, would lay black marks for days (allegedly). Some guy rear ended me so bad it caused a 3 car accident, destroying my beloved Grand Am.
finally!... i been waiting for someone to do this car.. i had a 94 and always thought this gen was 300 percent better. wouldve liked to see the coupe with a 5mt . the coupe was really sporty looking and at the time it was very futuristic looking... look at the 94 model and you can see the evolution
I didn't know this about the Grand Am until I got a '05 Grand Prix The first gen. Grand Am were intended to be a gap between the Grand Prix and Trans Am. pretty neat stuff
I miss my '98 GT coupe (was formerly my wifes). She was a nice sporty little car when she ran, but started having issues with the anti-theft system (instrument cluster, i didnt know until after i junked her). She basically became a paperweight, and the sunroof got off track, so i got $225 from the pick n pull. It was unfortunate, not enough time or money to tackle the issue...
My first car was a 94 Grand AM se. It had the 3.1L and automatic and was the same body style. It did have the head gasket issue at around 90k-ish and that was the death of it.
It was a lower intake manifold gasket. People often blamed the head gaskets. As long as you didn’t completely over heat it, it was very save-able. I used to do LIM gaskets for extra money a lot on these and the 3400’s
I've had a 1995 and a 2004. The '95 looked a little better than this year, imo. It was fun to drive in the twisties, with excellent balance. It was sensitive to bad gas and never got really good mileage, but it was great basic transportation. The 2004 was far more style and less reliability, and was somehow prone to poor traction, despite being FWD. I will say the '95 Grand Am felt like a fragile death trap compared to the later years and a 1990 Bonneville I had, taking worse damage in slower fender benders.
I kinda dig the part folding rear seat: many cars today have the whole seat back that folds down and doesn't do so flatly. By having just the center portion do so, it can very easily.
I can still remember the feel of those 90's GM seats. 90's GM seats really do have a signature feel to them, and they were decently comfortable for short to medium length drives.
Ahhhh little bro Zach....I love these Grand Am's, man. 100% defining American cars of my youth. Pontiac did have a wink 😜and a bit of a humorous smile in those days, now long gone....good to see it represented here. JV Johnny ⚾⚾
That button on the gear shifter is not O/D OFF. If you dont want overdrive on, you have to manually select 3rd gear. It's either performance shift mode or traction control off.
My dad had a 96 2dr gt and that thing was suuupperr bare bones of a vehicle and thats what i appreciate about it. Its super basic but materials were cheap fagile and flabby
This was arguably my favorite generation of grand am, particularly this refreshed model. Back when cars were still cars, and not smartphones with tires. I miss these...
Funny to see the cigarette lighter in the spot where a push button start would be. Like, "I can't start my commute without lighting a cigarette first" 😄
If I still had my 2006 Grand Prix GXP I would have let you drive it. When I bought it used in 2009 I actually chose it over a G8 GT because I preferred the way it drove.
Had a 97 sedan but it was white. 3.1 v6 as well. Fun car when it actually ran right, which was almost never😂 had a ofe for the EGR that never went away and i stopped trying after the 3rd EGR valve lol broke down like 2 weeks after i would fix something every time🤦♂️ and the intake gasket job was a NIGHTMARE. Finally got rid of it eventually, but it was quick enough for my 19 y/o self bacl then and handled great lol
Nostalgia wise, it's cool seeing one of these as Grand Ams were EVERYWHERE when I was a kid. But even in my flyover country hometown people had switched to Japanese cars at this point.
As a kid in the 1990s, I saw these everywhere and they made me think of a typical common car, but now looking at it again decades later it seems strange looking… time changes things for sure.
My mom had a bright red 98 Grand Am GT coupe that she leased new in late-1997 when I was around 13 and I always thought it looked like a fun toy at the time 😂 hers must have been pretty basic since it didn't have steering wheel radio controls or folding back seats like this one has but it had the V6 engine with a kinda cool sounds note from the dual exhausts that I still remember and I loved sneaking it out late at night when I was 14-15 😭 At 39 years old today I still wont tell her that lol.
I had the Oldsmobile flavoured one of these: The Achieva. And honestly, it's a picture of why Oldsmobile failed and why GM failed in this period. The Pontiac's interior is way better and there are more features (the radio buttons on the wheel and the fold-down seats)... despite the fact Pontiac was supposed to be a lesser car than Oldsmobile. I have to assume as a point to be fair, though, that my car was a lesser 4-banger equipped vehicle (though on the other hand, by 1997, my car's year, the Achieva model range was very spartan and almost non-existent). The Quad-4 is a neat engine and a suitable-enough final engine by Oldsmobile---on paper. It's Achilles Heel is you must never, under any circumstances, let it get hot. And, well, I did. Too many times. I was a moron in those days. So yeah, it was getting ready to blow a head gasket by the time I was done with it. It already had a rod knock.
button on shifter is not for overdrive you can see the gears D,3,2,1 so 3 is overdrive off. pretty sure it is the traction control 8:38 woah ciggy outlet by the steering wheel like a push button ignition only push button smoke time.

That grand am is in amazing condition. Too bad it doesn't have leather, I would buy it. There's a few like that near me, wish there was more. thanks good revue.
These were disposable cars but this one looks remarkably well-kept. Those blobby gray plastic buttons are so familiar as GM used them in everything. The three-spoke wheels are awesome. I like how Pontiac tried to live up to being the sporty brand even if they were largely badge-engineered Chevys.
The american Mitsubishi Eclipse. IE: Nobody actually wanted a Grand Am.... they just ended up with them somehow. This is definitely a top line model.... I bet a lot of these didnt have steering wheel controls, the fancy radio, the V6, and full power doors. Anything from the 90s in good shape is a certain amount of desirable at this point.

Man, the N-Body platform is so good. So nimble, still soft, and plenty of room inside. I miss my 1995 Skylark all the time
drove one 2 door still rode like a cloud
These and Grand Prix used to be everywhere. I still see a few Grand Prix now and then, but not very many Grand Am's. This car reminds me of the 90s 🙌👍
You'll still see 00-05 Grand Ams on the road

@@chaseteter That's b/c those Delco radios easily put 75 - 100 watts of power depending on the model of radio.
The styling reminds me of what Rockstar would have used for NPC cars in GTA 4.. if they were using real car brands. (Bland..)
I love how much you can pull from these early 90s fwd pontiacs. I can see the passion you have for the brand.
I had a 2001 GT and absolutely loved it. But after 100k miles, it didn't feel reliable anymore
