I think it's just amazin' how different her face looks when she makes the scene in which Nina's reflection on the mirror looks at her and the lights go out. She actually seems like another person with her facial expression. What an actress!
Guys this was a film, not a professional ballet. What does it matter Natalie had a double for dancing? Obviously they can't train her into her role. Her acting was amazing and that was what really mattered, and why she was casted for the role.
i think alot of people don't care that Natalie had a double, as much as that the dancer was not given proper credit for it. That--and that many dancers feel that to even believe what takes years upon years upon years of training, could be done in 12 months.
Jean Hoffman I read that what ended up of the dance double's work in the film was only a minute or so of footage and therefore not worth making her more prominent in the credits. Most of the dancing was Natalie.
The producers of this film along with her publicist did everything they could to ensure that that is what people believe, as it would benefit Natalie at the Oscars along with the hype of the film. Do not believe everything you read.
Jean Hoffman Actually, you can genuinely tell when it's Portman and when it's Lane with Portman's face composited. It really does seem to be Portman most of the film.
She did very little of the actual dancing in the movie. You can't become a ballerina and be able to dance en pointe in a year and a half. But they give hardly any credit for her double and pretend that she actually did all that dancing
Mrs Slibby most of the shots weren’t even en pointe though, many of them were wide shots of Natalie’s upper body. The shots en pointe were done by Sarah Lane as well as the hardest ballet moves such as the fouettés in Odile’s coda.
I'm not arguing that Natalie is an amazing actress but they portray it like she's this amazing person who mastered ballet in a matter of months which is just not possible. I'm sire she worked very hard to learn what she did. Sure maybe she deserved the Oscar but I'm sure tue way she was portrayed as being this amazing dancer helped her chances. I also have a hard time believing Natalie didn't know how she was being portrayed wasnt accurate maybe she just had no control over it but she played along with it. I place most of the blame on the producers and media people but Natalie still could've spoken out and she didnt.
I really like her as an actress and she did a great job in this movie. As many other have said, the problem here is that there were no credits for her body double, because the production wanted people believe that Natalie Portman did all the dance by herself, *included* the hardest ballerina skills, to ensure her to win the oscar. This was both disrepectful to her body double and to Natalie Portman herself, because all her efforts in dancing for the most part of the movie and her actorial skills were stained by a lie. It would have been nice if she thanked her body double during her acceptance speech.
Woooooooow! Darren really knows when and where to use CGI effects they made it so seamless. With the right lighting and everything, and where it wasn't too much.
I have been dabbling in special effects for about a year now as a hobby, and this is very impressive. Subtle effects are always the best, and (without seeing this video) I would have never been able to guess which things were composited afterwards. Even though I haven't seen this movie yet, I still enjoyed watching this.
Some people say that we've been so naive in believing that Natalie became a prima ballerina in a year and a half. But it's not that way. When I saw the movie for the first time (I've watched it 3 or 4 times), I was pretty sure that Natalie didn't dance the coda or did some of the en pointe scenes either, it was clear they must have used a double. But I still loved the movie and Natalie's performance (as an actress), and I think she really deserved that Oscar.
I think Natalie did an amazing job and deserved the awards. Her performance was very believable. In a year and a half, I'm sure she couldn't be completely perfect in ballet, because it takes many years to learn. But still, in that small amount of time, I think she did a great job. However, I don't think anyone should underplay the amount of work that Sarah Lane put into helping her.
it's astonishing the amount of detail that goes into making a film....just cleaning up the floor, something you would never think of. film makers are so dedicated.
@KissKara I think a lot of ballet dancers and ballet fans feel that claims that one could learn to dance like a ballerina in 18 months is insulting to ballet dancers. It takes years and years to master ballet, continuous training from a very young age, pain, sweat, lost childhood. When they start to dance en pointe, their feet blister and bleed. Ballet is one of the most difficult professions. Also, to me, and I am just a fan, it's part of the whole attitude towards arts today.
because Fox Searchlight has gone to great lengths to understate the amount of help Portman received, since the concept of her training hard for over a year to become a ballrina was what a lot of the buzz for the film centered around.
I think even if we knew just how much she did train, we'd still be impressed with her Oscar-worthy dedication to the dancing part of her role. I would still want her to win best actress simply for her "head's" expressions telling the story of Nina's transformation.
Couple hours earlier, I was eating some stuff and a scene from CSI where they dissected a human head and brain appeared. I was cool and continued with eating like a boss. BUT, when I watched Black Swan and those quills and 'skin rash' started appearing I almost ripped my eyes out. Scarred for life.
In the original video, besides the dancing double for Natalie for the more complex scenes, I also remember them showing how they did the skin pulling/ripping.
I really like how they did the reflections of the camera removal but also the mirror reflections to where the actress' reflection is different very awesome!
Ever since I was a kid Natalie Portman’s always just been Padme Amidala to me but after seeing this movie about a year ago this is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I see her in anything.
It saddens me that Aronofsky himself (when accepting Portman's BAFTA) said that Portman is "in every shot" of the movie, when there is obviously a double in at least some of the dance scenes. I'm happy for the movie's success and I want Natalie to win the Oscar, but I wish people involved in her campaign wouldn't flat out lie to help her win, when it isn't even necessary and the performance (even minus the dancing) should speak for itself.
@staboymalibu94 I was being simple, in cinematography, they have their own version of photoshop meaning digital software using algorithms, matte matching/moving, chroma key, and many other terms / effect tools used to add or take away from a shot. Adobe has its own version called "After Affects" so saying "photoshop" is a general term for simplicity's sake. :)
yeah but natalie won the oscar because she acted insanely amazing in this movie. Maybe she didn't dance all the parts by herself. Technology's levels are increasing and the methods of filming are changing and 'coz all of the CGs doesn't mean that Natalie had it more easier that way she had to work really really hard anyway. That's my opinion and I think that she really deserved that Oscar for sure. She worked super hard and did a fabulous job :P
nvrmind i FOUND THE OLD VIDEO!!!! the one with the face replacements like I saw the first time i watched this video. took me forever to find it but i did. why would they re-edit this video and take out those parts if they werent trying to hide something. i dont care natalie didnt dance the "85%" i have a problem with everyone involved in the movie claiming she did. when i first saw this video with the face replacements i didnt think anything less of natalies acting. i figured they used a double.
They did the head replacement so that all the dancer would look like nina. She was thinking that everyone around her was turning into her, and that she was constantly battling between the black swan and the white swan.
"“We had a formula down where we would shoot the dance double how ever Darren wanted to shoot it. Then we would bring Natalie in and have her go through the exact same motion, same lighting, same camera move and shoot it at 48 frames per second to reduce the motion blur. Then it was a matter of doing matchmoving and replacing the head.” Nuff said.
its the best movie i've ever seen, verything was so perfect and they'd deserve more than eight oscars, sadly theyre just nominate for 5.... hope they'll win all of them!!!!
@rumneet tbh i really didnt expect her to do everything. and when i saw the real effects video months ago with the 2 extra scenes in it, 1 was at the start after the part they removed the crew and it said FACE REPLACEMENT with a big arrow and they put natalies face on it. and then at the end at the black swan part when they showed her face up close they paused it and it was the body doubles face and then they had another big arrow with FACE REPLACEMENT and now all those videos are edited to this
@footballinx36x during the second half of the move in the mirror it is Natalie. They switched her in as the camera moves behind Cassel's reflection. You can clearly see its her as the camera focuses onto her. So she did do that dance move just not the entire way.
@Karionette You are absolutely right except for the fact that Natalie did not pick up training as an adult for the first time, she is a clasically trained ballerina from the age of 4. If she had been out of it for a while, at her age, a year of training would be necessary for her at the least to get anything close to a professional level, but absouletly not impossible.
If you're complaining about the head replacements also complain about the mirror shots and the one with the moving paintings... oh, and also the "floor cleanup"shots
I thought that maybe, and that's a big maybe, Natalie deserved the Oscar for the last few scenes and the work she put in. Then I found out about the CGI, that she didn't do most of the dancing, and they lied to everybody about it... That's not fair, and it most likely cost one of the other nominees an Oscar...
The filmmakers did say that the black swan spin is the most difficult dance in the world so they had to bring in the big guns i.e Sarah as the double since she could do it perfectly and was 5'2 just like natalie and sort of resembled her in the end they did a face replacement so yeah. Anyways i always knew that wasn't natalie so whatever i still loved her in the film.
@nailbroth In Natalie's defense despite being one of her harsher critics for taking all of the credits i can say that she did talk about her doubles and dancers when she showed up on David Letterman. The only problem i have is that they said she did all of the dancing, actually 90% but that was not true and the fact that they forced down the original video with the head replacement says a lot. Anyways case closed i loved the film and she does deserve an oscar actually.
I have to say that the movie isn't completely about the dancing. It's about a character going insane to be perfect. The dancing is amazing and it's not that big of deal that a stunt double was used. I still love the part where she turns into the black swan onstage even though it wasn't Natatlie. My favorite shot in any film last year. It's about the filmaking and sometimes certain things need to be sacrificed. My number two film of last year by the way!
Natalie did hell of a performance as Nina. Even if she didn't do any dance scenes, the way she plays the character is just amazing. She deserved the Oscar, and all the prices she got. they edit the film with either fast mock up effects or nothing, then do the effects once it's edited to they don't have to do extra work. it's why when you see deleted scenes there's no effects work done
@Quetzacoatl2 How good is it hey! now that's how CG should be used
Yes, as a storytelling device instead of just making something look "cool"
Amazing how much they done with a budget of 13 millions.
thumbs up for editing crew!
It's awesome how her arms turn into wings while she's pique-turning.
For those who think Natalie didn't deserve the Oscar I just wanna ask... so did she have to actually grow those feathers in her arms to deserve that ?
RIP logic.
She did very little of the actual dancing in the movie. You can't become a ballerina and be able to dance en pointe in a year and a half. But they give hardly any credit for her double and pretend that she actually did all that dancing

I wish more studios would release VFX reels. This is so cool!
Why did they not mention that they placed natalies head over Sarah's in the dancing scenes? Natalie only did little bits and arm movements.
there was drama on whether or not she deserved best actress if she wasn't the one dancing (yeah the drama was dumb imo)
those goose bumps/quills are going to give her the Oscar.... however she pulled that off , now thats acting!!!
@KissKara I think a lot of ballet dancers and ballet fans feel that claims that one could learn to dance like a ballerina in 18 months is insulting to ballet dancers. is it just me, or did they edit this clip? you used to see natalie's head replacement and now you no longer see it in this video.
thats a great video. so many details that i wouldnt even think of (like a clean floor) but that are so important for the picture
I barely noticed the CGI used in this film! Amazing!
The black swan is just a great movie. My favorite part of this is when her legs bend back like a swans
In the original video, besides the dancing double for Natalie for the more complex scenes, I also remember them showing how they did the skin pulling/ripping.
I really like how they did the reflections of the camera removal but also the mirror reflections to where the actress' reflection is different very awesome!
3:24 Wow they would not acknowledge face replacement in the following shots where the double was used. Sneaky bastards.
You know how people yawn when they see other people yawn? I literally get goosebumps at the end of this video, no matter how many times I watch it.
absolutely gorgeous!!!!! perfection!!!
Ever since I was a kid Natalie Portman’s always just been Padme Amidala to me but after seeing this movie about a year ago this is the first thing that comes to mind whenever I see her in anything.
Excellent work of animators and modelers!) Amazing realistic, in my youth I was doing the same interesting clips on the platform of 3D MAX)
It saddens me that Aronofsky himself (when accepting Portman's BAFTA) said that Portman is "in every shot" of the movie, when there is obviously a double in at least some of the dance scenes. @leonbaisden I agree- speaking as someone who's been doing ballet since he was 7, she does a brilliant job
yeah but natalie won the oscar because she acted insanely amazing in this movie. Maybe she didn't dance all the parts by herself. What a wonderful and beautiful job! :')
Very interesting video, I like it.
Awesome VFX reel!!

this video is such a treat
that was incredible.
So cool. I wondered how they did most of this. :)
They did the head replacement so that all the dancer would look like nina. She was thinking that everyone around her was turning into her, and that she was constantly battling between the black swan and the white swan.
Awesome Reel
why did they delete all of the parts where they put natalie's face on her dance double's body?

@RetroPotter exactly. Her acting was great but she is now being given credit for something she didn't do.
Awesome feature, even better movie
OMG the skin rash make me itch xD
i love this movie!

impressive!

oh my God!!! is that illegal that i haven't see the movie but i watch this video? OH MY GOD!!!!
@chobito251195 It's the "Danse With Goblets" from "Swan Lake." I think it's from near the end of Act I.
It was perfect
Neither Natalie nor Darren "lied" to get an Oscar. Natalie won her Oscar fair and square.
TOO. COOL.!
Pretty spiffy!
@RetroPotter Did you see the movie? They did the face replacement for the one scene where she's going crazy and she sees her own face everywhere.
I have to say that the movie isn't completely about the dancing. It's about a character going insane to be perfect. The dancing is amazing and it's not that big of deal that a stunt double was used. o my fucking godd this is amazing
I was wondering when I saw the movie how they were able to film mirrors without a camera in the reflection
amazing movie
Natalie did hell of a performance as Nina. Even if she didn't do any dance scenes, the way she plays the character is just amazing. She deserved the Oscar, and all the prices she got. And, stop insulting her as if all of this is her fault, and its not.

Would really love to know the soundtrack for this feature... Awesome
If anyone knows please advise ...
Thank You...
Did this video always had this soundtrack???
at 3:21 where is the shot of them inserting Natalie's head with Sarah Lane's body in this sequence?
Was your #1 favorite Inception?
I luv this song, what’s it called?
@asuwish111 they pulled it for a reason.LOOK FX showed how flawlessly they could make it look like any actor could dance like we saw in the movie. if i couldnt tell the difference in the movie it doesnt matter.I was just saying if they could change the face and it didnt look goofy or off in any way how do you know natalie was used for any of the dance sequences?im not saying she didnt dance at all but the original fx reel did show the replacements and now I can only find 1 site w/ the old video.
lol..can you guys upload an HD version of this? its hard to see cause its pixelated.
Excellent!
La BO est superbe. (D'un côté, c'est Tchaïkovsky..)
why did they cut the head replacement parts???
The leg scene scare me every time
it's from the original ballet Swan Lake composed by Tchaikovsky
search "Swan Lake Ballet" on youtube uploaded by ballet5sponch (channel)
@FrozenPeaches The floor cleaning up and the wings.
@summerstarr882 Isn't that Sarah Lane's face right there at that point? It doesn't look like Natalie there, like they just showed the wing cgi and didn't get to the head replacement....which they should have shown either way.
And in the end, without the Oscar for Natalie I don't think we would have heard anything from Sarah Lane.
@asuwish111 how do you know its her or her face wasnt cgi'd onto the body doubles? that was what was great about the effects reel. I knew natalie didnt do most the dancing and they made it seem like she did flawlessly. thats what effects do. this isnt flashdance where u just throw a wig on someone, they digitally placed natalies face on someone else. LOOK FX did a great job
do they make visual effects during or after film editing??
+DrStrangeLove2050 with film editing what do you mean?
they edit the film with either fast mock up effects or nothing, then do the effects once it's edited to they don't have to do extra work. it's why when you see deleted scenes there's no effects work done
Wow this is soooo cool!!! Thanks so much for posting.
Oh wow that is Sarah's face. Wow! I knew something was off about this movie from the first dance sequence dream which looks to be completely cgi'ed.
@iamtheladyofsorrows Get it now? Or do I have to explain it for a 3rd time?
@Quetzacoatl2 How good is it hey! If i was the camera operator i would be like "shit getting reflections everywhere" but how good would it be to just go for it, get all the shots you want without worrying about reflections.
