It was left off his 1st solo album Face Value; at the time he viewed it as a b-side. Then a few years later, Taylor Hackford approached him to write a song for his 1984 film Against All Odds. So he rewrote it as Against The Odds, but Hackford insisted to have the word "All" in its place. So he complied. 😊 And in all honesty, I prefer Phil's version much more. It's raw and heartfelt. And although Mariah is a fantastic singer, no denying that, I find her version a bit too busy with that many notes.
