Hello and welcome to a Special Focus Episode of Makeup & Mayhem: True Crime with Bella Monsoon…me!
This week I am bringing a case to light that whilst might have not taken place in South Africa, concerns a young South African girl currently imprisoned for a crime she did not commit. After stumbling upon this case, I reached out to the friends & family behind the Facebook page: A Voice for Ashley Oosthuizen and after communication, they agreed that an episode on her story might help in spreading awareness. So here we are.
Thank you for taking the time out of your day to watch this video and learn about who Ashley is and how you could possibly help her- and it might not even be in the way you think!

I hardly ever comment on TH-cam videos, BUT your presentation of this case was terrible. I watch some of your other coverings, and I enjoyed it. I recommend you to other friends yesterday as a seasoned true-crime fan. Yet I find it very interesting that you- a mental health care professional take this stance.
We (you included) have no idea if Ashley was aware or involved with this whole saga, yet we the watchers - at least the critical ones cannot help to wonder who is involved with an older man (much older) and not know the in's and out's of his life. He sponsored her working visa, so they were intimately involved, this was not a casual fling, so why are we assuming she had no knowledge of this happening. You presented this as very biased.
Ashley had no after-school training. How privileged of her to assume that she can teach any-academic-curricula to foreign kids. I am aware that this happens often in Thailand, but it is not as common as you make it out to be. Asian governments are working hard to ensure that qualified individuals with background checks and good medical checks are employed. I am wondering what happened here because with the case of Richard Huckle one would hope countries are more thorough. You never mention issues of socio-economic privilege, not all South Africans can travel (even after working) to teach in a foreign country. This is completely arrogant on her part. Yet, I also assume the schools are corrupt because who in their right mind will let someone with such a poor case rep and an unqualified young adult teach developing kids.
You made sure with your delivery that we are well aware that Ashley did not know and was so busy when she signed for the package. You also made sure with your vocal stresses that we know she did not party after matric - like her peers-What a loud of niknaks! From a psychological perspective, highlight her above average life, she went to Outeniqua High-a a public yet very expensive school. She was a lifeguard- not your everyday position for a South African 18-year-old. You need some training and at least first aid certification, this costs money. When you said 'You see, Ashley wanted to travel abroad and teach..."- watch out for your vocals.
From a psychological perspective, on the day she signed for the said package- she has been doing this so often that it did not spark any suspicion on her side. You emphasize she was so busy, just to sign something off to get it off her list. As someone who has studied and worked abroad, this is just terrible to assume. Because all foreigners, ALWAYS translate everything in Asia before they do anything. But she was just too busy? I cannot help to wonder if it's gender privilege, or much more.
I am all for her being safe and sound in South Africa and would want her to have a fair trial, yet I know Thailand is not known for that. BUT, don't paint this young adult as an innocent young girl caught between the fire of her thug-like bf and the Thai police. She's 21, if this was a case of her deciding about something else with legal ramifications that would benefit her; the narrative would be how she's a strong, independent woman.
I like your content. You are one of so few South African channels but keep with your impartial position. I am not suggesting that Ashley is involved or innocent, because I won't know. Why would I trust the comments of the bf, with his rep? You can still advocate for her safe return and fair trial without impartial nuances. I for one cannot help to wonder if she was of a different gender, race, and socio-economic background if this would be a different presentation

Check out Huisgenoot Lewensdrama on Showmax. There is a similar story about a coloured woman who was a former beauty queen. Her name is Vanessa Goosen I think. Because of her boyfriend at the time she was detained in a Thai prison and worst part is not long after she found out that she was pregnant and gave birth to a daughter in prison. I think they had a rule after the age of 3 kids could no longer stay in the prison so she got her best friend in South Africa to raise her daughter. I can't remember how long she was in there but when she came out her daughter was a teenager.

At 7:41, I must stress the significance of preserving one's reputation to Thai individuals, particularly in the realm of legal matters. In simpler terms, the Thai judicial system is unlikely to admit to a false conviction or judicial error. Moreover, Ashley's legal advisor, Lizelle Martin, is unlikely to gain the favor of Thai officials while displaying her tattoos. In Thailand, your appearance and attire are considered reflections of your respect for others. Contrastingly, in Western cultures, how you dress is often seen as an expression of your individuality. Many well-intentioned Westerners overlook this crucial cultural difference, leading them to wonder why Thai authorities are so easily offended.

After watching this video I contacted my friend. He is a South African diplomat. He knows about the case and if it wasn't for there department she would have hang a week after her conviction. What he said was that this wasn't a fly by night drug operation, this was a well oiled machine. He didn't go into detail about this. From what I gathered was that there's to many such cases for them to concentrate on her case alone. 1200 south Africans are locked up in Brazil alone for drug related crimes. She isn't the only south African there also.

She's not as innocent as she claims. Reason being that this was a well oiled operation and there's not a chance that she didn't know nothing that was going on. For that reason, her case isn't much more special then the other south Africans that's locked up overseas for drug related crimes.

When I heard that he was American and saw his face. 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩started flying. She should have known better but then again she was a child and I don't blame her for being naive. At her age I made stupid mistakes too. And I'm also thinking she must have been lonely and she latched on to the first person who looked familiar and spoke the same language since everyone else spoke Thai mostly.

What about the South African government? Isn't it possible for them to negotiate with Thailand?

    • @PrincessVelaryon
      @PrincessVelaryon ปีที่แล้ว

The government doesn't get involved in cases abroad especially drug cases in the east then they don't they just act as a go in between or messenger for the family. Also we are a small country with no international political influence 😮‍💨 if she was American maybe they would of at least asked that she serve her sentence back home

What kind of double standard is this? A cute looking white woman committed a crime and you ask her to be free? Imagine a Thai person breaking a law here in the UK, would the paper be written in Thai? Would you be asking to free her?

    • @tellaqq

English is the International language. Its the Law to give a person an English translation of the documents if the original documents are not in a language they understand. Besides Ashley is Afrikaans not English so your argument doesnt match

@@tellaqq Yours doesn't make sense. There was a translator present according to other sources, Thailand is not an English speaking country? Even if she is Afrikaans-how then would she be eligible to teach English?

I was super excited when i saw you doing Ashley's story, but very disappointed in the way u were presenting it. Its like u forcing all of us to believe she's innocent...which she maybe or may not be. We weren't their and as an adult i find it hard to believe she can honestly say she had no idea what her "boyfriend" was doing. How he even got to Thailand with he's extended criminal past is beyond me. Something is off about this case from first day i read about it. As a fellow South african i would like to see her home with her family. But well never know the whole truth🥴

She certainly does Not deserve life in prision, but common!!! Cut the Bs, Stop pretending she's an inocent victim!!! She knew exacly what was in those packages, & what she was doing ! She was directly involved in helping trafic/ smuggle drugs !!! &;she knew the potential consequences!!!
Their are hundreds of south africans rotting in foreign prisions for drug traficing, people "less guilty than Ashley, just desperate people who carried a bag cross the border,,, rite in south probably 10s of thousands people in prision for drugs,, many doing 25 years !!!! What about all of them????

I'm admittedly naive, i don't want to offend anyone at all. I've noticed while watching your videos that you have a large English vocabulary. Also, I have a very difficult time understanding most accents however I have no problem understanding you. I was just curious about what your first language is and also what language do most South Africans speak? I thought that South Africans spoke Afrikaans, am I misinformed?
I'm an English speaking American btw.

Afrikaans speaking South Africans account for only 7% of the entire population. Public schools in SA are predominantly English medium and English is a compulsory language either as a first or second language in all schools. It is very rare to find a South African who does not speak English. Also because South Africa was colonised by Britain, the English taught in institutions and spoken here is 'UK English'. Hope this helps.

      Hi!
No offence taken at all, I’m happy to answer🥰
As many others have commented already, here in South Africa- we have 11 official languages. However almost all of the country do speak English too! Most schools also teach in English as a primary language and if not primary, then secondary.
My first language is English. I also have a degree in English language and literature and years of Montessori and International school teaching during my childhood so I’ve also always had a slight accent to my English!
      Hope that answers your question!
P.S thanks for supporting the channel ✨🥰
