    12-16-2019 - my house was built in 1910. used your video and another to stop a leak at the sight glass. $ 6.25 for the 2 nuts/ washers/ gaskets . your advice to open up the bottom to push the crap out - worked well. im back in business, and saved $100 / no furnace guy. JDS/CT

    Thank you so much for the video and the laughter thank you because I was a nervous wreck and you made me laugh through this whole thing and it made it feel so much easier to take care of the situation instead of spending $500!!! Thank you thank you thank you!!

    The water line is actually imprinted on the body of the boiler. Too much water, leaves no room for the steam pocket to develop, and may cause the water line to surge. Most just use 1/2 to 2/3 of the sight glass. The biggest thing to keep in mind is to flush down the Low water cut off once a week to try keep the sediment at a manageable level and keep that safety operational.

      @Chris Chen on Wealth Creation You are probably losing water somewhere in your overall system. Perhaps too much steam is coming out of your radiator valves and that is where you are losing water. Alternatively, the top of your steam boiler may have a hole in it and you are losing steam through your chimney. If you are running your system and see white smoke coming out of your chimney, that is probably the reason.

    Bozo, I loved your vid. Unlike all the slick know-it-alls, your vid will make someone who hasn't done this before feel a little better about themselves. I give you credit for trying. Yes, there are many good ways to do this depending on your heating system, as per some of the comments, below. For me, it is the guy who is willing to take a chance and do something they've never done before-a guy who learns while doing even though he'll make an occasional mistake-who is a guy worthy of respect.

    I drain out my boiler every month but once a week when I use it alot. However I had a feeling that my glass needed to be cleaned out so thank you for the comedy and lesson in cleaning it out. I let the bottom water run out until it was clean. Had black gunk in my hands.

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad I could help! It's good to get a service once in a while too. If there's gunk there, there's probably gunk everywhere.

      @@Bootstrappin I just found out that I am supposed to use a water treatment because if the water has too much oxygen it will rust. So you have to make a PH9 which will slow down the rusting process. So I am not supposed to drain the water out monthly. Yes I will have it cleaned out this summer. Thank you.

      Don’t drain your boiler

    After cleaning the glass and replacing the washers, open the bottom valve 1st. If the water level comes up in the glass it means there is a leak at the top washer. Science 2 things can't occupy the same space at the same time.

    What if we use a hose made to handle high heat to help drain out the gunk. 🤗

    Btw. when the boiler water has a pH of 9, then the iron doesn't rust.

    Now that you have cleaned the sight glass how about the pigtail that is underneath the pressuretrol. If the pigtail gets plugged it can no longer sense the pressure in the boiler so it's important to clean that out every year or two. Also the probe on the LWCO should also be removed and cleaned every couple of years. It is vital that the LWCO works in case the boiler water level goes down too low.

      That boiler won't be around much longer if the entire system isn't flushed with some Rectorseal 8-way flush.

      Had a pro service it before the Winter season. This much sludge in the sight glass was probably just a symptom.

    Bottom valve of the sight glass should be the one with a bleeder on the bottom , all you do is leave the sight glass valves open , open the bleeder into a bucket or can ,glass is self cleaning. Glass tubes are of course tempered, can buy better ones they are called "red line" and have a red stripe on them. Why do you have a hand valve closed ,when the water level drops it has to be able to fill automatically to maintain the correct level ,which it can't do with the valve closed. Maintained 3 200 hp. Steam boilers for twenty years.

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't have an auto fill option, it'll just pop the blow off valve as far as I know

    • @johnkrim8377
      @johnkrim8377 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hard to believe it don't have an auto fill on it , every time the water level falls you would have to go down to add water to the boiler. Can't see the whole boiler but if that is the case the person that installed it should have his credentials checked. If you went away for any length of time in the winter and the boiler level went down and automatically shut off, your whole house would freeze up and you would have a lot of broken pipes!!!!

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@johnkrim8377 unfortunately that's exactly what happens. Once, we forgot to turn off the water supply valve, and it flooded the radiators. Continuously have to monitor the level and refill. Just not an option on this boiler for some reason.

    I just cleaned my sight glass thanks to this! I also don't have any type of auto fill on my boiler, when you add water to your system does it fill extremely slowly? I cant tell if mine is filling at all or if its just flooding something it shouldn't be

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it's usually pretty fast depending on how much you open your inlet valve. It also depends on the size of the boiler I suppose.

  • @DeanQLQPasa

    Can a dirty site glass cause the boiler to trip? I drained the water several times and i can hear the feeder adding water, but it then stops approximately a 1/4 of inch below operating level.

    Will adding cold water to a hot boiler such as this cause the cast iron to crack?

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can - so it's generally advised to open the valve slowly so as to not create thermal shock

  • @thomasbroking7943
    @thomasbroking7943 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Those two valves unscrew just as easy as the glass nuts came out, then you wash the valves out in the sink to. I think you should get another boiler guy over there I can't see the whole job but that return doesn't look right to me. There is a right way to hook those up it's not just connect the hole to something

    your techniques are a little scary. h2o level too high. the boiler pressure gauge is useless. I hope its running in ounces. what is the steam pressure c.i. /c.o. set at? always test lwco, & pressure relief valve. learn how to cut a new glass. sometimes they crack off during removal. clean the system with tsp. definitely needs it.

    • @johnkrim8377
      @johnkrim8377 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      vinni vegas That system is really gunked up , If it were mine I would drain it completely fill it up and and flush it a couple of times , then let it auto fill and you should know the correct water level
