    Brighton fan here wishing the best of luck with Potter. He played some great football with us and before our new arch rivals chelsea came along he had us flying high. That did take about two years or so and it seems that Potter needs that kinda time to bed himself in and do whatever a managers does, to get the team in a good position. I'm unsure if he will get that time at West ham but we will see, although you all know far better than i do about how West ham is run. Hopefully potter works magic, was great to see you guys win the conference league a few years ago.

      I recall Potter playing good football at Brighton, but also having 2 relegation dog fights in the 2 full seasons he had with you guys.
      Not much difference to what Lopetegui was doing here.

    Sullivan's suggestion that Potter's success at Brighton was helped by that club's infrastructure leads to the conclusion that if Potter fails at West Ham it will be down to West Ham's infrastructure, i.e. down to Sullivan.

    Posted this as a reply, but thought I'd give it it's own post in case anyone was interested:
    I started following West Ham in 03/04 when we were in the Championship (stupid teenager I was). In that time we have had an average Premier League postion of 11.68, and an average points per season in the Premier League of 44.73.
    In the last 4 seasons with Moyes (not inlcluding the two seasons where he came in and saved us from relegation, I couldn't be bothered compiling partial season stats) we have had an average Premier League position of 9.00, and an average points per season of 53.25.
    I think it's pretty easy to forget what was going on fairly regularly prior to the 2020/2021 season. We sucked. Before 2020/2021, we had placed better than 10th in the Premier League 3 times since 03/04. 9th under Pardew in 2005/2006, 9th under Zola in 2008/2009 and 7th under Bilic in 2015/2016. In the last 4 years, we came 6th, 7th, 14th and 9th. This is not normal for West Ham.
    Our top 5 premier league points totals in the premier league since 2003/2004 years are: 65 under Moyes in 2020/2021, 62 under Bilic in 2015/2016, 56 under Moyes in 21/22, 55 under Pardew in 2005/2006 and 52 under Moyes in 2023/2024 (that got him sacked). This means that 3 of our best 5 points totals since 2003/2004 have occured in the last 5 years. West Ham have experienced an unprecidented level of success since 2020.
    To think this is business as usual is completely fallacous and incorrect, and to expect it to continue in the post-Moyes era is optimistic verging on stupid. I hope that Potter can also perform above traditional expectations for West Ham, but it's important to remember that historically mid-table is a good season.

      Agreed. Turmoil is par for the course at West Ham at this time.
      Potter didn't survive Chelsea's behind the scenes basket weaving. I doubt he will flourish fully at West Ham either.
      Not that I particularly doubt his abilities it's just that the sand is constantly shifting under a person's feet at this club.
      Under a more stable board I think he could do better for us than he might be 'allowed' to do just now.
      But then, I really wasn't thinking Sully would even pull the trigger on Lopetegui until three different sources reported he had definitely gone today 😂

    I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Potter developed players at Brighton so they could be sold to big clubs that was the nature of Brighton itself and those players perception of the club. Now we are a bigger club and want to be considerably bigger still but like it or not as things stand players like Kudus and previously Paqueta were only ever at West Ham as a middleman to move onto better things. So we need to either avoid players like that or use them to gradually improve the club to the point where as with Aston Villa and Newcastle they are far less likely to want to move onto better things. As you say that’s a club issue not a Potter issue he would only want to move people on if they become disruptive or if the support falls below what he needs and moving them on may provide the budget to improve the team overall.

  • @50pence59

    Trouble is Sullivan wants the managers to develop assets we can sell for squillions.

    No to Ashworth, considering how Brighton has progressed after Potter and Ashworth left, it points to Tony Bloom and his AI analytics team that did the heavy lifting.
    Also, considering the headlines from Sky and Manchester Evening News ... "Dan Ashworth overruled at Man Utd over Southgate", "Dan Ashworth pushed for Gareth Southgate at Man United". I think we need a proper scouting system so Tim can get some real talent over the line.
      All the successfully run clubs are not relying on one man to identify and sign targets, they have a full infrastructure backing the d.o.f.
      As long as Sullivan is no longer the one sitting down with our targets it's still better than it was! But we still need to build on our scouting staff.

    I agree re TS it makes total sense, the power struggle goes on and explains the undermining of him from Sullivan from early on. Done himself no favours but seriously I warned 8 months ago the brewing disaster of expecting to transform a team in around 2 months because Sullivan refused to payoff Moyes for those last dying useless months post last Christmas. I said anything better than 50% success with new players would be a bonus. Duran/Fulkrug were the killers but what’s the full story there, but we have to be realistic, when you need 8 or 9 players you end up taking risks on second, third or fourth choices at some point and some you buy are in and out of favour not necessarily based on talent either. You are right, luck over judgement indeed is the influencing factor here and will be while the clowns are in control.

    I totally agree that the cup win a lot of luck.
    How Moyes managed to get a contract after only getting ONE POINT more than Pellegrini boggles my mind, but his time coincided with Rice coming into his own. I think the COVID situation also seemed to benefit him.
    There were rumblings of getting him rid of him during the World Cup break and that season's performance only validates that, but the run in the UECL and, ultimately, the win, diverted attention from the poor run in the league and facilitated another European, that we wouldn't have had.

      But if Kretinsky did block it, perhaps it was due to no successor lined up? Or they had to discuss who was coming in before pulling trigger?
      Edit: perhaps unpopular but points wise I think they maybe did the right thing, purely points wise

    The problem is that Sully wants to be Chairman, Manager, Chief Scout, Negotiator, and everything that involves responsibility at the club. He clearly has trust issues. He can never relinquish full control to anyone and initially says yes then claws it back. Therefore, HE is the biggest problem. Steidten is obviously not innocent in all of this but he's not working under the right conditions to thrive, and neither will Potter. It's already common knowledge that Sully's not convinced. Will be interesting to see how this all pans out... A step in the right direction today though. ⚒

    I think it's too early to judge Tim and his level of success at West Ham - it's only been 1 window, 5 months ago that he had as free a reign as you can get at a club (unless you are the owner 😉)... Granted there were mistakes, like the Osman debacle, although I think we dodged a bullet there... Even with a diluted role under Moyes he signed Kudus and Alvarez, both impressive at the time both holding value at a minimum with Kudus being significantly worth more now... People moan about Guilherme but I am happy we done that deal, it being the first was a statement from Tim too... I think he's been alright, even impressive..! I like the signings and think Steidten shines most with the bidding, negotiating and ability to attract players that would probably not of come to us without his involvement... What worries me with him is the leaking of info this past week, I think he's good at using the media to his end as we saw in the summer but think if he was behind the Potter leaks it was a mistake and maybe a mis-step too far... I personally want and hope he stays, I think he'll work well with Potter and should get the opportunity... Pulling the plug early on Loppy was necessary, doing so with Tim would be a massive backward step...

    • @jaywatsonWHU1895
      @jaywatsonWHU1895 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Also, I don't mind him being around them players at the training ground and the stadium/changing room on match days... Seeing first hand the way the manager works with players, how players work with the coaching team etc would be valuable to him I think... I heard a group within the squad, or one of the players who was talking for a number of them, approached Steidten and raised concerns about Lopetagui, possibly more than once... I believe they used him as a conduit to get messages higher up about concerns they had... I've heard the same about Mark Noble and believe that it's true - that both are probably true, not one or the other but that both had players approach them at least once each, probably more than that tbh... I know they probably have Tim's number etc but having him around the players it not only allowed the opportunity to talk to him in person but also allowed relationships and trust to be built up between himself and the players... If he was just a contact in their phones and they had only seen him when they signed, that's if he signed them as only those that arrived since him would know him, if that were the case it would be unlikely they'd trust him with their concerns... I think in Germany and a lot of Europe it's not unusual for a Director Of Football, or people in equivalent roles, to be in and around the players and to have a more prominent presence, I personally don't mind and see the benefits...

      @ I think he’s excellent at closing deals.
      I think a lot assumed Rodriguez and Soler etc would fit with what Lopetegui wanted and I think that’s a fair assumption for fans to make when they don’t know the players too well - that the person in charge of transfers is capable of identifying players to fit the head coach.
      Changing your mind when presented with data is an excellent characteristic to have imo and if fans have changed their view due to what they’ve seen, I think that’s very fair.

    • @peterjordan5947
      @peterjordan5947 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@HammersChatyeah that's totally fair to now stand back and say, you know what they haven't worked out. But what I'm saying is, it's easy to do that after we've seen them play. Look at the Todibo signing video and look at the comments section. Everyone was excited about the signing and everyone was praising Tim. There were nonreal concerns raised the Todibo would flop and there was even suggestions that he would need time to settle down into the team. What I'm saying is - WHU have struggled to find someone who can actually bring players in which we're excited to see arrive. AWB's arrive excited me. Yes we can take a step back and say, it's not worked out, but we were excited at the time. He can't get them all right, and if I'm honest I think it's still too early to be sure if some of these players are flops or not. Even Tevez (my favourite and most exciting signing my lifetime) didn't really kick off until later in the season. All I'm saying is, I had a really exciting and enjoyable summer due to the players Tim brought in and we've struggled with that for decades. It would be a shame to lose that due to a few flops (which might still come good). Just my own thoughts

Fornals last minute goal against AZ Alkmar and Bowen's last minute winner in the final are great examples of Moyes riding his luck - he sure as hell didn't have much clue about how to adapt the game to the different teams we played (as was demonstrated in the Europa league games).
