    Gotta give some love to Tiran Porter, one of my favorite bass players. He never takes the obvious route, always playing something interesting that acts as a counterpoint to the main melody while still driving the song forward. And a great singer too!

    • @CharCanuck14
      @CharCanuck14 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Doobie harmony wouldn't be the same without Tiran's voice.

      Spot on!! I started learning bass a couple of years ago and Tiran Porter created some of the most incredible bass lines I have ever heard. Beyond my current skill level, but working on getting there.

    • @1Hiprascal
      @1Hiprascal ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Tiran's a great player. It's his playing that first got me to follow the bass line in music. I still consider him to be one of the best.

      Some fantastic bass parts. Very original. Love his tone. Fat with what sounds like fresh flatwounds. That tone kills me.

    I’m Tommy, I’m 61 now and am a huge fan of your reactions. I can give you perspective on a man that lived when this music was coming out. The Doobies have always been an extremely under rated band. Check out Jesus is just all right. People may disagree with me. But it’s their best song.

    Tommy Johnston (lead vocals on this track) came down with serious stomach issues and was replaced by McDonald and the band transitioned to a more laid back sound. A few years later Johnston returned, McDonald left and they returned to the rock sound to this day. Saw Three Dog Night in concert around 1972 and the Doobies, who nobody had ever heard of at the time, were the opening act and blew the roof off the place. A couple of weeks later Listen To The Music hit the airwaves.

    The Doobie Brothers group's first half-dozen albums had a rock feel that morphed into a sound steeped in white funk. It's a compelling
    story of changing with the times and the influences of the music they loved. So in their way, they had two careers and a wider appeal to
    more people. That's what good music is all about. It's all good.

  • @midnightrambler7716

    The album this is from, The Captain and Me was released 50 years ago. I bought it that same year, when I was 13 on the advice of my older brother. Still love every track to this day and it is still one of my top 10 favorite all time albums. Not a weak track on there and worthy of an entire album reaction. Highlights for me include the Johnston and Simmons guitar opus Without You, Clear as the Driven Snow, Ukiah and Dark Eyed Cajun Woman. Jeff Skunk Baxter also of Steely Dan fame played pedal steel guitar on South City Midnight Lady…another banger. Shameful that it took till 2020 for these musical geniuses to be inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame!

    Takes me back to my teen years! The Doobies had a great groove... and those bongos added special sauce! Music from the 70's was fantastic. I enjoy watching younger generations discovering for themselves how talented the songwriters, instrumentalists and vocalists were to lay down tracks like this, without auto tune and other enhancements. No disrespect to today's artists--- because there are some great ones---but I wish everybody under 30 would listen to a few songs like this from 50 years ago to experience authentically great talent. Thanks for opening your minds to rock, funk, blues, and all the other genres that we got to enjoy. Hope it will keep this music alive and well!!
