In this video from 1949, Consolidated Edison shares what goes on behind the scenes of the big city of New York. At the time, Con Edison had 30,000 employees that supplied most of the electricity, gas, and steam which helped to keep New York lively.
Ed shares how New York wouldn’t be what it is without the power of electricity. For one thing, there would be no skyscrapers. Without electricity, elevators wouldn’t work, meaning New Yorkers would have to take the stairs in these 45-50 floors. Without electricity, the subways wouldn’t work, leaving people in surrounding areas unable to get to work.
Electric communications such as radio, telephones, and telegraphs would all be unable to work without Con Edison. Then there’s the water and sewer system. They too are made efficient and reliable with electric powered pumps. And as for the workshops and factories, they operate to the hum of millions of electric motors. When it comes to steam, some boilers in the city are over 14 stories high.
In 1949 New York was the world's largest industrial center, which would fail without electricity.
Ed explains how power plants work to power New York City. Learn about all of the moving parts and people that carry power to homes and businesses. Learn about all of the steps of powering the city from the arrival of coal to the distribution of electricity. At the time Con Edison had 8 electrical stations all connected to each other underground.
