The Ikadazu Kagura Troupe presents: Jinmu (English subtitles)【英語字幕配信】筏津神楽団「神武」

There are over 200 kagura troupes in Hiroshima Prefecture working to pass down and preserve the rich heritage of the traditional performing art of kagura. Before COVID-19, kagura troupes would perform to large audiences at events, festivals, and even kagura competitions. With international travel still not back to what it once was, we thought we’d bring the magic of kagura to you at home, complete with English subtitles, until the day when travel to Japan is possible.

【Synopsis】
Kanyamato-Iwarehiko-no-Mikoto (Jinmu) sets off from Takachiho in Hyūga-no-Kuni (current southern Kyushu) to Yamato-no-Kuni (current Nara Prefecture) in the east to find somewhere suitable to establish the capital of Japan and rule the country. He faces the forces of Nagasune-hiko, and after a great battle, Jinmu and his army head south to Kumano before once again trying to reach Yamato. While doing battle with various great families who had long been settled in the dangerous mountain paths along the way, Jinmu and his army are led by the legendary Yatagarasu, a three-legged crow and messenger of the god Amatsu-kami, to Kashiwara at the foot of Mt. Unebiyama in Yamato. It is there that they establish the capital and begin their quest to unify all of Japan under one rule.
【あらすじ】
神倭磐余彦命（かんやまといわれひこのみこと=神武）は「どの地を都とすれば天下を治められようか、東方を目指そう」と日向の国・高千穂を出発し、大和の国へ着きます。
この地で長髄彦（ながすねひこ）の軍と戦いますが、苦戦の末、神武の軍は南に向かい、熊野から大和を目指します。
険しい山々と土着の豪族との戦いを重ねながらも天津神（あまつかみ）の使い、八咫烏（やたがらす）の導きによって大和・畝傍山（うねびやま）の山麓、橿原（かしわら）の地にたどり着き、ここを都として天下の統一を計るという物語です。

Thank you so much for going to the trouble televising and then sharing this production free of charge. I have seen only tiny samples of live performances of 5 Japanese theatrical traditions -- gagaku, noh, kabuki, bunraku, and kagura, all five vastly different from Western theatrical genres -- and I find kagura's theatricality stirs my juices the most. Not to detract from the polished performances of the dance-actors and musician, I want to particularly commend the video crew for creating the atmosphere of being in the front row of a small and intimate audience space.
