- In this video I restore a 28 year old CNC, and back it back in to service! This Prototrak DPM machine came out of a shop in Springfield MA, and I believe I am only the second owner. Huge thank you to Steve, and Aaron at Prototrak for their support. If you buy yourself a used Trak machine they sell all the parts here:

I have been running Trax mills and lathes on and off for the last 25 years. I have always been happy with them. The first brand new one I got to run was a DPM5 in 2003 with the SM controls. Watch out for that y hand wheel, I have dropped myself to the floor a few times
My hand always covers the sensitive equipment as a precaution, nothing quite like getting sack tapped three times before you figure out you should move
You're going to love this machine after getting more familiar with the controller!
I could hear that endmill praying, then nothing. Poor little guy gave it his best. An old/cheap Machinist hand book has a lot of info, diff material speeds n feeds to give starting points.
6800$ or whatever it was sounds like and INCREDIBLE deal. I've seen those mostly come up for sale at 12-20 grandish. Great video!
I bought those WD-40 EZ-Pods after you mentioned them in a previous video. They work great! They are economical and are easy to mix up! Thanks for the suggestion. 👍🏼
How do they taste tho

I have a 1996 bed mill Prototrak at home and a 2022 Prototrak bed mill at work and I love them both. I’m an instrument maker / prototype machinist.
Loved the video! Thanks for sharing with all of us. I also love the Prototrak line of CNC machines, they are what we use everyday in our toolroom. 👍👍
paused the vid & bought some of those pods. Been using that degreaser for a while. good stuff. didn't know about the pods.
Bought a 2001 Prototrak few years back. Theyre great to work with in keeping old machines working.
Very awesome! Pumped to see what you do with it in the future
One great thing I love about those DPM Mills is that the quill and the Z servo are tied together. So you can jog the Z down close to the work, then unlock your quill and bring the cutter down against the material, and then zero your z, and then when you go up with the quill, it knows how far above the work you are. You really don't need to use the 3D probe to set your Z with that feature. Very handy.
Fascinating, back in the mid 1970’s my employer got an unusual cnc machine based on a Bridgeport mill. It was called a Moog hydra point. It was a 2 axis machine entirely hydraulic in operation with no lead screws. Sadly many years after I left, about 30 to be honest I returned to the workshop after my boss had died at the behest of his son-in-law. And it was still there looking sorry for itself.
Sweet mill! Looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I talked to Corey the other day, sounds like you may be paying us a visit out on the island soon? Can’t wait!
Can appreciate the clean up process you went thru. Looking forward to more vids on this rascal👍
Did same thing to an endmill first time I used my cnc mill lol That's a nice beefy machine, should last a long time. Nice find and upgrades !
Good score. I am looking forward to more videos about this project.
Nice video. I have a 92 DPM with the original MX3 controller. I love the machine and would really like to update the controller. My machine has the Acu-Rite "mini" glass scales, so taking my table off is a little more complicated, because I do not want to damage the scales. I did make some of the alignment clips for the Mini Scales, so I should be OK taking the table off. Thanks for sharing all of the info. Thumbs up from Toledo, Ohio
Nice machine and even nicer restoration! That thing looks awesome!
Great restoration job! Looking forward to seeing it being used in projects.
Looks like a decent machine, hope it works out well.
Wow excellent job man awesome machine
Great cleanup job. Hope I have the space to get one of these machines one day
Great video, and an expensive lesson on the test piece!
I'd hardly call it an expensive lesson. Its a $2.50 janky eBay cutter...
I realy looking forward to follow this project!
Looks amazing! Dam nice!
Hello: The link for the steam cleaner is dead. If YOU READ THIS, PLEASE let me know what steam cleaner you used. P.S. THANK YOU for the great videos. You get right to the point. It's a pleasure watching your videos.
Cleaning it up and changing ball screws is a good start but if you don't re-surface/scrape the ways and re-bore the quill you're going to have accuracy and chatter problems.
Dude! At time 17:07! 2112! Rush rules!
been waiting for this👍👍
Upgrade your spindle motor to a brushless AC servo! It will let you ridged tap and is a much smaller motor. Just need 220v to power the driver and some knowledge on Step/Dir signals with encoder setup. plus you can get 5000rpm and can take your new tachometer off if you want because its a servo
You can use fresh coolant to break up the old stuff then pump out the slurry of gross
You Bought the machine in Massachusetts? Chicopee Mass by any chance? I bought the exact same machine from a fab shop selling 2 in Chicopee about a year ago…
Great video 👌👌
CAD = Cardboard Aided Design 😉
It’s my specialty!
Hahaha I bought the sister machine right next to this one for the same company. I wanted to buy this one but was told someone already made a deal for it. I got the green and cream one
@@StockbutBetter it was a great deal! I begged him to hold this one for me until I could get there to pick it up! Super nice guy and a very cool shop
@@MakeEverything It sure was a great deal! All said and done I paid 6500. 6000 for the machine and 500 to load it on my trailer. I end up disassembling it and sandblasting the machine to repaint it. A huge under taking that I miss calculated on and it took forever to get it done. The biggest pain was the epoxy resin filler because u had a short work time frame
need to centre that tailstock
Voice sounds different, hope you're ok
I used a different program to enhance the audio to sound clearer, did it sound better or worse?
@@MakeEverything sounded maybe a little less clear, kind of like if your voice was rough after yelling all night, or rough from after a cold/flu. At least that was my first impression and hearing your usual recorded voice. Maybe it wouldn't be as obvious if I was new to channel. Also kinda seemed to take the dynamics out, sometimes you speak louder or quieter and this seemed a lot more level, which I guess is a good thing but I thought it sounded less expressive / more subdued.
😄
jibs.
CNC "computer numerical control" can refer to any number of machines, including whatever the hell this one is. To use CNC as an exclusive designation for a specific machine is as offensive as those idiots who called wireless ear pods a as "Bluetooths" IDIOTS!
Lol he stated it was a cnc mill and mentioned multiple different examples of cnc machines throughout the video. Since the subject of this video is the cnc mill then just shortening it to cnc or cnc machine within the video makes sense. Its simple grammar.
@NigraeLegiones I did not, nor am I going to watch a video with an ambiguous title. People are constantly misleading us with titles!
