Viv had a Test batting average of 50+ in the era of 1970s and 80s - thinner bats,longer boundaries,pitches helping bowlers as well and more skilled bowling. Viv was the undisputed best ODI batsman with an average of 47 in 70s and 80s - Unlike Michael Bevan,Viv never had a lot of not outs as well to boost his average. In the era of 90s,That ODI batting avg. would have been 60+ . As you said,Viv is just being modest. The most naturally talented batsman ever.

2003 WC - sachin scored 673 runs in that long tournament in South africa... he smashed every team and brought his team till the finals !! but, some tactical mistakes in the final, led the aussies to score more than 350 and but, even after that Sachin wanted to win it for India.. He went for the runs straightaway and unfortunately got out.. I'm sure, even if Sachin had scored some 150+ in that game, India would have lost.. bcoz of the other players would have failed ! that's Indian team for u !
It was a Ganguly's mistake who elected to field first.he knows that we defend 183 and won the world cup in1983. And which the kind of form Sachin shows in entire series anybody can choose to bat first to bring opposition under pressure.

2007 WC - Sachin didn't do well.. and India were knocked out in the first round itself !! 2011 WC - Sachin scored 482 runs.. leading run scorer for the Indian team and 2nd highest run getter in that tourney overall. India won the WC.. I'm not saying sachin won us the WC.. bcoz there were players like YUVI, Gambhir, Zaheer, Dhoni, Raina, Kohli and everyone who were in the team contributed for the team and hence the result !!! finally, GOOD knocks by Sachin were backed up by the team and they won
