The Uchidachi was in too much of a rush, he had to look down at his belt to place the sword. The back steps in number 1 were too quick which forced the Shidachi to shift to Joudan hastily, as well as causing the missed parry in number 3. The quick pace just leaves little to no room for zanshin or any gravitas for that matter. It's a shame that even in the higher grades, kata remains a largely neglected aspect of Kendo. Budo in general is unbalanced.
i agree with you. some might say you are not allowed to criticise just because he is 8th dan but if you listen to all the people with high grades it's all about the path to perfection and that there is always something to learn. he was in deed to fast for his own good.

Kata refers to the 10 prescribed forms with the wooden sword shown in video. Enbu means demonstration or exhibition.

@Alexander Galejev He's right though. Uchidachi was very rushed and his maai was off in several of the kata.
I am pretty sure the demonstrators saw the video and had the same critique to themselves, perhaps more harsh even.
