He achieved more at that young age than we can aspire over a lifetime. Besides, his terrific good-looks , devil-may-care-attitude and disregard for authority , will forever make him an icon.
I read in the book "A Higher Call", that he died during an engine failure of the new Gustav-4 variant deployed to JG-27. A gear in the new DB engine shattered and sheared an oil line - the cockpit filled with smoke disorienting Marseille. The plane was in a dive when he bailed out, and the airflow sucked him into the rudder knocking him unconscious. Marseille had actually refused to fly the new plane bc he was aware that the engine was failure prone. Sadly, General Albert Kesselring ordered Marseille to fly the new plane which killed him - not combat.
according to Franz Kurowski, in his book, he was flying in the new Bf 109G, engine fire, he then inverted in a half-roll on it's back.His chute never opened. The regimental doctor noted a nasty gash above the hip. He apparently was knocked unconscious after hitting the rudder,the handle for the chute was still on "safe". the last entry in his logbook: 388 combat flights / 158 kills. Number of this flight: 482, flight time: 54 min.

I believe so because while hartmann was fighting more incompetent and underarmed russian pilots(it sucks for me to say this since i myself am Russian)in the eastern front(they literally had to draw their own gunsights in their cockpits which should give u an idea of how ill equipped they were).marseile on the other hand was fighting much more seasoned adversaries out on the western front with targets ranging from spitfires and hurricanes to p51 mustangs.the guy was insanely talented in terms of aerial marksmanship,couple that up with unmatched eyesight and you have yourself one overpowered fighting machine.i am quite a big fan of marseille,the dude was as chivalrous as he was handsome.

The majority of pilots downed by Marseille were especially British, Australian and South African, but it is definitely true that the pilots Marseille shot down were mostly much better trained than the cannon fodder that was sent up to meet German fighter pilots on the eastern front.

For quality he's the best! defeating 158 well trained and equipped allied pilots (Spitfire, Mustang, Hawker Hurricane) is really difficult job, compared this with Hartmann scoring 352 but in Eastern Front! mostly are 'conscript' pilots. Gordon Clack he only need 2 air fighting to make 12 kill, and in another day he gain another 17 air victory only from 3 missions , he died at 22yo and cause of death engine failure, technically he still undefeated.

Sent to Africa to keep from becoming an Allied ace (he had had four planes shot out from under him), in Africa he matured into a compassionate warrior. His best friend was a black Pow that Marseille and his squadron mates hid from the SS. Marseille risked a court martial, several times for flying over British aerodromes to let them know that he had shot down one of their pilots and the condition of the pilot. This act of chivalry spoke volumes about his character. Thank you for posting this, I cannot stop playing it. Beautiful job.

I have nothing but respect for the brave fighting men like Marseille and so many others who didn't make it back. My grandfather and great grandfather served in Europe, both US Army. Luckily, they WERE lucky enough to make it back. I regret the fact that I don't know more of my relatives who served in WWII.

Damn, he was INSANELY good-looking. What a fox. Great story about Hans Joachim Marseille -- he was a fantastic piano player. He was once invited to play the piano at a party where a lot of the higher-ups in the Nazi government (Hitler included) were in attendance. He started out playing a repertoire of Bach and Beethoven songs, before eventually switching to jazz. For those who don't understand why this was such a big deal -- American jazz music was considered "degenerate" by the Nazi government (mostly because it was associated with African-Americans) and was therefore officially banned in Germany. Needless to say, Hitler was not very amused by this and immediately told Marseille "I think we've heard enough." I think that's awesome, though. Daring to play jazz music in front of Hitler must have taken some serious balls. Props to Marseille.

One of my heroes of WW2! Marseille’s record of 151 kills in North Africa where nothing short of staggering. He destroyed Allied (RAF, SAAF and RAAF) squadrons shooting down 101 Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk/Kittyhawk fighters, 30 Hawker Hurricane fighters, 16 Supermarine Spitfire fighters(one of the best planes of WW2), two Martin A-30 Baltimore bombers, one Bristol Blenheim bomber; and one Martin Maryland bomber!

For the same reason I also wouldn't have a problem with the Nazis shooting RAF airmen under their chutes over Britain. Kristján Zophoníasson I know of at least one American vet that recalled shooting down a German because he was specifically targeting American bomber crew parachutes. You're ridiculous if you think any side did not do it.

Man, talk about finding your groove. I'm truly heartbroken that he was defeated & taken at such a young age. This is an excellent video & has been saved to my playlist.
I think he was one of the best pilots in WWII, but it is hard to compare pilots because they fought in different regions with different aircraft. He was extremely skilled and a very good shot which is a deadly combination and was the star of Africa. I met many WWII US soldiers who were awarded the MOH and most of them said that the true heroes were the ones that died on the battlefield. I missed the Vietnam War by two years and always give respect to anyone who served in the military.

he shot down Australians and maybe one of my relatives. But he tangled with our best ace . Killer Caldwell RAAF and lost his wingman in the engagement

I did not know about the black POW. However, there are many true stories about Luftwaffe chivalry.

He was flying the G variant of the ME109, which shortly after his death was found to have serious design faults which caused fire and other pilots were killed by it

Great story about Hans Joachim Marseille -- he was a fantastic piano player. He was once invited to play the piano at a party where a lot of the higher-ups in the Nazi government (Hitler included) were in attendance. He started out playing a repertoire of Bach and Beethoven songs, before eventually switching to jazz. For those who don't understand why this was such a big deal -- American jazz music was considered "degenerate" by the Nazi government (mostly because it was associated with African-Americans) and was therefore officially banned in Germany. Needless to say, Hitler was not very amused by this and immediately told Marseille "I think we've heard enough."
I think that's awesome, though. Daring to play jazz music in front of Hitler must have taken some serious balls. Props to Marseille.

O melhor piloto de caça da 2ww na minha opinião, sua habilidade em disparos de deflexão realmente eram impressionante. Em média 60 cartuchos de metralhadora e 5 cartuchos de canhão para derrubar um inimigo. Enquanto outros gastavam centenas de metralhadora e dezenas de canhão. A boatos que Erwin Rommel havia convidado Marseille para um evento que iria acontecer justo no dia 30 de setembro. Cada um se sentaria de um lado de Adolf Hitler, Porém, Marseille recusou. Como séria se Marseille tivesse aceitado o convite? Bem, não sabemos. Um final muito triste para um Excelente piloto e uma ótima pessoa. Sabemos que Marseille não era muito chegado ao Naz*smo. Esse pode ter sido um motivo para recusar o convite de Rommel ? Creio que sim.

One of my heroes of WW2! Marseille’s record of 151 kills in North Africa where nothing short of staggering. He destroyed Allied (RAF, SAAF and RAAF) squadrons shooting down 101 Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk/Kittyhawk fighters, 30 Hawker Hurricane fighters, 16 Supermarine Spitfire fighters(one of the best planes of WW2), two Martin A-30 Baltimore bombers, one Bristol Blenheim bomber; and one Martin Maryland bomber!

For the same reason I also wouldn't have a problem with the Nazis shooting RAF airmen under their chutes over Britain.
Tank crews on all sides had no qualms about shooting enemy tank crew while baling out of their tanks, infantry routinely shot the hell out of enemy infantry running away, so why should aircrew be exempt from the true horror of war?
Your Luftwaffy heroes used white painted "rescue/SAR" He 115 floatplanes under the red cross in the English Channel to spy on Britains coastal defences and still we didn't shoot your boys in their chutes when coming down over SE England.
Perhaps the Poles and the Czechs did but they had a bloody good excuse didn't they?

+marc roland There are literally reports for every side. Every major country involved shot either an innocent or a parachuting pilot. It was war. It's not supposed to be pretty and no I'm not saying they should have done that, but acting like one country didn't do it is dumb
+marc roland there are no records on German fighter pilots shooting pilots parachuting. On the contrary, there are reports on Allies doing such "cowardness" Act.
Kristján Zophoníasson I know of at least one American vet that recalled shooting down a German because he was specifically targeting American bomber crew parachutes. You're ridiculous if you think any side did not do it.

I think he was one of the best pilots in WWII, but it is hard to compare pilots because they fought in different regions with different aircraft. He was extremely skilled and a very good shot which is a deadly combination and was the star of Africa. I met many WWII US soldiers who were awarded the MOH and most of them said that the true heroes were the ones that died on the battlefield. I missed the Vietnam War by two years and always give respect to anyone who served in the military.
