I find family are the hardest to reach, they're the most resistant to hearing the truth.

Absolutely, it's the area of my life that has met with the most resistence, persecution and struggle. I pray and believe God will make a way to reach their hearts and intercede, I feel my role.. apart from gently sharing truth when the opportunity presents, and being an example.. is to be patient and grow in my faith and build on what I have with God, that it may inturn inadvertantly be proof of the healing, loving and forgiveness of Jesus. It's one of the hardest things to watch your own family push away or deny the Lord. God had a plan, always in control.

Yes, remember they have known you to be nonGodly, with your past choices. Maybe even reckless decisions. And they are hoping that “coming to Jesus, would be temporary.” You have to give an example of Jesus in your life so they can see the transformation.

Also, the power of being QUIET when you are not to speak.
I see a lot of my friends involved in the New Age, Ancestorism, Yoga - even a mixture of the above and more and I have learnt to pray and seek God's knowledge on how, when or even if I should approach them. At times God has a plan that we know nothing about concerning people and if we seek His face first, a lot of issues are bound to be avoided.

That's crazy, I am in the same boat, but I definitely was overbearing with my little sister. I feel bad about sometimes. God told me to read Mark 6:11, without knowing what it said! "Any place that does not welcome you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off the soles of your feet as a testimony against them [breaking all ties with them because they rejected My message].”
      Mark 6:11 AMP
It's not for everyone but my family doesn't speak to me and I don't speak to them so it made sense to me :') God be with you always sister.

In my younger years, my family had a wonderful pastor from India. He told the story of how a new missionary came to the local Hindu priest and told him he needed to know more about Hinduism and asked the priest to help him. Through this, they developed a good friendship, and out of courtesy, the priest asked him to explain Christianity. The missionary did and the priest accepted Christ as his Savior. Our pastor was that priest. I later found out that he was considered throughout India as one of the most revered Christian teachers.

Exactly! Planting a seed is important for a Christian to know. I was on the Christian Reddit the other day and I came across a non believer who had some tougher questions for why the cross should make sense for him or her.
While answering their question, I gave them the gospel. While I wanted to keep going, I recognized that this person still had reservations and maybe I was meant to just plant a seed. We have to recognize that we won’t make that seed sprout, that’s the work of the Lord. Plant one and pray for them.

Always find it 'sad' that the Gospel is presented by many in such ways that make Christians look weird or unrealistic.
Jesus in the New testament met and answered peoples needs in so many ways plus he wasted no time with those who were simply out to mock him or abuse his time.
He Also WEPT with those that wept how LOVELY it would be to see more of his people do this than Bible Bash Robotically.

I am too emotional. I start crying when people call me stupid and saying my faith is fake and stupid. I dont know why I get so emotional. I know it’s not stupid or fake I just don’t know how to not be emotional.

    • @JoshSmith-eq7ht
      @JoshSmith-eq7ht 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Being emotional can be a good thing. God can use your passion, enthusiasm and genuine expression of feelings to help share your story and how God changed your life. In other words your witnessing, can be authentic, moving and captivating. On the other hand, your emotions and passion can also assist you with listening. As you here there story and struggle you can empathize with them in a genuine way. They'll know by your emotions that you actually care. Of course, we can over do emotions, especially negative responses. God can help us learn the balance. He can turn our weaknesses into strengths and blessings! Be encouraged sister!

Read the whole bible, test and learn it to myself, and apply(except for converting someone cause I still need practice for that).
This will be my first step for now until I can finally handle things like this. And if you are also a baby christian you shouldn't also rush into things like this yet. Let's walk together.

Dear Melissa, that was so helpful and fun! God bless you! Your videos are the best ones on TH-cam! Please make more sketches like that if you could and want to because they're not only fun to watch but also very helpful in real situations! I have a JW friend and it's really hard for me to witness to her because both me and her are too emotional and each one is trying to prove that she's right and it's no good... So, thank you! You're such a blessing! 💗

I wish I could've seen this video when I was first saved. When I was a Born Again i was very excited to convert everyone at my school. I felt very lonely during this time and my church essentially encouraged me and said that if i lost friends for my faith and thats actually a good thing. I wish someone wouldve stopped me on my tracks and told me to be reasonable towards people. This was a really good video and i hope this reaches people and communicates affective ways to speak about Jesus. I don't consider myself a christian anymore unfortunately but I'm glad i watched this video

  • @jesusislord1285
    @jesusislord1285 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you for this video! I hate to admit it but I am not good at witnessing at all. I'm not naturally a people person and I do not have the gift of gab. And honestly I struggle with figuring out doctrine vs modern day new agey 'christian' stuff. Of course, as I read scripture every day, I understand more bit by bit. Truly, all I want to do is tell people about sin and the awesome substitution Jesus made on the cross. Ever since being saved three years ago, I just want to hug everyone and dance and cry out with a song in my voice, "We don't have to pay for our own sins! Jesus did that! Repent and believe!" I try so hard because I want people to be saved and I want to be faithful and obedient. But I am terrible at it. I pray that God will show me how to witness, and He is showing me the examples of how others effectively do that. And how He, Jesus, talked with people in scripture. What an awesome God we serve! I definitely want to be effective. The thought of anyone around me ending up having to pay eternally for their sins breaks my heart--but it doesn't have to be that way if they would only repent and trust Jesus. ❤️

I wonder if anybody has any advice on how to tactfully 'get out' of what are 'fruitless' conversations about faith (i.e - conversations that don't have the slightest possibility of leading to 'conversion' or understanding). I am quite a new convert (about one year) and have been involved most of that time with a street ministry team. We go out once a week for two years, so we only have a limited time to get across to as many souls as possible.
I often find myself cornered by one of two times of 'time wasters', both of these types being the kind of person who would happily take up my full two hour shift.
(one) The smug so called 'Christian' who wants to impress you with obscure Bible 'facts', and wants to ask me what my interpretation of certain obscure Bible passages is (& invariably they will counter me with 'Wrong !' and then try to 'enlighten' me with their own unique 'interpretation').
(two) The intellectual 'blabberer'. This person has a head full of obscure facts about all different religions, philosophies, and spiritual paths, but has failed to put them all together into a coherent 'belief system' or 'position'. They just blabber on and on (& often I find myself asking them 'What point are you trying to make ?').
How can I get out of these ind of fruitless conversations without coming across as rude ?

    • @Alexis-wh2de
      @Alexis-wh2de 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

First, can I say that you have my deepest empathy. I have found myself in similar situations even with people who go on and on about secular topics! 😤...😥...
I am the type of person who calls people out on their time wasting (though I wasn't always this way). I ask them directly, "What exactly is the point of this conversation?" Sometimes we go into a conversation expecting it to be a dialogue while the other person has different plans. It's your right to know because no one deserves to be held hostage as an audience or soundboard.
If someone starts to get rude, I also call it out: "So, it looks to me you just want someone to talk at (or validate your beliefs) rather than talk to (or have an honest dialogue) and honestly I could enroll in a college class if I wanted a lecture. Thanks but no thanks." You don't have to be nasty in your tone of voice, just be civil and matter of fact.
I have physically walked away from people because some just feel entitled to your time. No. No, they are not. Be they friend, family, acquaintance, or the guy at the bus stop. Just my 2 cents. I hope you find your path forward. Praying for you 🙏🏿

    • @angeladmager7464

Great question! The book, Tactics, does address this in a couple of chapters. A couple lines he gives to say is: "It seems to me this conversation isn't going in a productive direction. I'm going to let you have the last word, and then I'm moving one".
Or: "I'm having a hard time getting my point across, so I'm going to just let this go for now. Thanks for your thoughts".
      Hope that's helpful!

Hey Melissa. Thanks for your truthful and open videos. I'm a believer, however, I struggle with the doctrine of predestination.
*For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.*

Love your love of apologetics and explaining things. I exhort you to look into and study the Westminster Confession, the Directory for public worship and you will see the precise desire of God for our worship to Him. God has given us exactly what to do and what we should leave alone!!!!! Music and instruments are important parts of worship and the other parts of worship are equally important to God so we won't slide into disobedience or let the leaven of the world into the church...which has been done and is being done. I used to not know these things as well and now I do and I have been very blessed to now attend the church which pays close attention to the desires of God for His worship. He alone has all the wisdom and knowledge that we don't.

@@MelissaDougherty Thank you, Sister Melissa for this timely video! In my experience working as a Natural Hairstylist in Portland, Oregon--where everyone says, "I'm very spiritual..lol!", it was easier to engage with unbelievers and ask them questions about why they believe what they believe with the Ruach Quodesh (Holy Spirit) leading. On the other hand, when I lovingly exhort professing Christians in willful disobedience, I am met with harsh criticism and pushback such as "Judge not, lest ye be judged", but I am not in any willful disobedience that I know of.
However, scripture does tell us that “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? I, the Lord , search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9‭-‬10 NKJV
So, I humbly ask the Ruach (Spirit) to search me and examine me, so I can confess it when I do. Have you had experiences like these? How do you handle them?
As I incline my ear to wisdom and apply my heart to understanding (as opposed to being understood), the (Ruach Quodesh) Holy Spirit revealed to me to deal with people in this way by His leading. I ask for His help in these areas a lot. The Father reminds me that not everyone is at the same spiritual maturity as Followers of the Way/ Believers and some have been at the same spiritual maturity level for years due to bondage to sin. The Lord is always opening opportunities for us to address the issue of sin in a Sister or Brother's life and to lovingly tell them to repent and rely on the Holy Spirit to strengthen them. However, if they don't listen, they could be in serious bondage and we should have compassion on them and do spiritual warfare and break the yoke of bondage through fasting and prayer. I confess...when I get frustrated with other Believers in stubborn sin, I start talking about them, but I had to repent because the Lord convicted me of it with this: "And one shall say, “Heap it up! Heap it up! Prepare the way, Take the stumbling block out of the way of My people.” For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, With him who has a contrite and humble spirit, To revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, Nor will I always be angry; For the spirit would fail before Me, And the souls which I have made."
      Isaiah 57:14‭-‬16 NKJV
Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; You shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am. ’ “If you take away the yoke from your midst, The pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, If you extend your soul to the hungry And satisfy the afflicted soul, Then your light shall dawn in the darkness, And your darkness shall be as the noonday.
      Isaiah 58:9‭-‬10 NKJV

My humble opinion is that the teachings of Jesus are those pearls.....and that we ALL need Jesus to be saved. (All have fallen short of His glory.....therefore we were at one point swine ourselves)
Jesus said we were to share the gospel in (and out) of season..
So my thoughts were that Jesus IS building His Church on His Spirit. (Not our "wise words") and the only time we are told to dust off our sandals is when folks do NOT receive the gospel.
We cannot (and should not) try to modify behaviors just so folks make US comfortable. As the Holy Spirit is our Comforter. Just some thoughts to chew on. 😇😎😀

First off I am not good at talking to people in general, I am a super nervous type.
Actually it makes me really sick to my stomach.
But outside of that no matter what I say about the Good News and Jesus, so many people start asking questions about Hell and then it goes into the conversation about how can a loving God send people to Hell. I try to explain that that is not the case.
    I end up walking away.

Reading Tactics right now, just started it today and I absolutely love it already. Such sound methodology and such an enhancement for an introvert like myself. But I love Jesus so darn much that I will do anything to better equip myself in being a fisher of men. And while despite being an introvert, I am or used to be extremely adept at persuasion and manipulation. One of my main strengths was being able to intellectually run circles around people in any type of argument, not proud of this like I was when I was lost. But I think because I have been that way, being diplomatic and modest, and just being gracious in communication tends to be a challenge for me. It's quite a learning curve. I assumed I would be great at sharing the Gospel but boy, I have had quite a reality check! And have to be mindful in such a different way than ever before. My goal in debates or disputes previously was to make the person feel like a small, ignorant fool and now that strategy is totally counterproductive. I have to rewrite my internal game plan for communication as railroading people won't help get anyone saved. Thankfully, since being born again, seeing my errors just implores me to be more meek, have temperance and true compassion and to of course be more Christ like out of love. Definitely a process to practice and solidify the qualities of being a new creation but definitely worth it. Sorry for rambling but hoping this comment will help someone who might be struggling to be a warrior for Christ in the same way I have. Awesome video as always Melissa! God bless all of you! Hang in there and stay strong by leaning on Him and not our own understanding. Don't give up ☺️, there's a whole world of lost souls that need us to walk the walk and speak the truth. 🙂🕊️✝️

This is a good practical talk. I forwarded it to my daughters. Good advice. The skit was interesting. I don't know if I could talk new age very well. By the grace of the Almighty, I survived 46 years in the mines and often only had time for hard quick decisions based on sometimes painful experience, so I guess I would need more love and patience. What I found quite interesting was the skit illustrated the value of Christians knowing their history. I find it sad that evangelicals and Christians in general refuse to engage in their history. Not knowing things about Nicaea, the crusades, the early fathers, the history of Israel, the Roman world, the dark ages, the reformation and most appalling a significant lack of Biblical knowledge (I think most people who call themselves Christians hardly read the Bible), core doctrines of the faith could be an embarrassment when witnessing. I know I might sound harsh and I have to work on the love part, but is not part of love wanting to know about your creator / redeemer and our whole contextual, historical narrative and then being able to gently give a truthful answer?

In all honesty, I worry about this TACTICS book. Yes, I bought it and
have it but haven't finished it yet. Still, here's my concern.
While strategies for good dialogue are a good thing, I cant shake this
feeling that just keeps nagging at me. The feeling that:
People will read this book and end up being TOO nice. To sinners.
    Who WONT repent.
But who will still be in your church. Some of them having a ministry when they shouldn't. Like Homosexuals.
We try to white-wash it by saying: well...OTHER things are also a sin.
That may be, but it probably doesn't matter. For example:
Suppose yer preacher slurs his words and is clearly drunk while
preaching at the pulpit. Then, you discover a pint of bourbon on one of
the shelves behind his pulpit. You confront him. Then the elders do. He
says he'll repent. 5 or 6 weeks later he's drunk again in church. What
now? Do you let him go on and on and keep preaching out out of "love"?
    I'm betting you don't.
BUT---somehow, with Homosexuality, its even worse.
DO YOU even confront someone on their gayness at all? Why not? See ROMANS chapter 1 verses 26-28.
If you do confront them, do they actually SAY they will repent,
like the drunk preacher did when you confronted him?
I will confidently bet that BY FAR most of them wont. And if they do...6
weeks later they'll still be gay-as-a-fruitcake. What then? Did
you let the drunk preacher slide? No?
Then why let THIS go on?
Now watch....some progressive church will now allow gays AND drunk
preachers.....not good at all. Far too many churches have no backbone. But we are TOO concerned these days about "having a dialogue". I fear that this TACTICS book will cause us to try to be overly patient and attempt to "love them back into the kingdom." This, to me, is futile. I would forgive the 1st offense, but thats it. It just ends up ENABLING sinners -longer- while they are still IN the
church. 9 out of 10 homosexuals are NOT going to repent. 4 months
later...10 months later...they will still be gay. The longer Sin is in the church, the more members see it, and think its "acceptable". BINGO! Another corrupted church. Think about that.
