Paratilapia polleni 'Maralambo' : 'A Pair In The Making'

  • These Paratilapia polleni 'Maralambo' have shown little interest in one another during the two years that I've been raising them. They have been together all that time, starting out as 1" youngsters. Presently, there are 2 males and 4 females in a 180G with Paretroplus menarambo (8) maculatus (5) and nourissati (4) keeping them company. And, oh yes a single Paretroplus kieneri. This male has been a bit of a loner, not really showing much interest in the mating game, until now. Females tend to be the aggressor in this species. I've seen it played out time and again, with polleni 'East Coast', where the female will entice and coax the male into reacting to her. (sound familiar?). Here is a video showing this behavior. It's hard to say whether they will pair successfully, but at least it's a start.

    Jim can you keep them in a group in say a 500 litre tank ?

    • @JimCummingCichlids
      @JimCummingCichlids  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liam, they do well in groups when young but I find that once they become fully mature, they get less tolerant of one another. So you kind of have to keep an eye on them to see if one of them, say, is getting picked on. Then remove it. But I would say 4 to 6 would do fine in 500L, but for how long, that's the question.

      Bleekeri is not a valid species. It is a junior synonym for one particular population of polleni. The largest spot Paratilapia is Paratilapia polleni 'Andapa'

    Good evening Jim. We are having some issues with our polleni couple. domestic fights as it may. the male is chasing the female relentlessly. We separated them but wish to keep them together. this all happened after the first batch of eggs dissapeared. is there any way to succes. and if separation is needed once in a while for how long should this be? We tried to put them together after a seperation of three weeks with no luck.
    hope u can help us a bit.
    best of luck and wishes to a healthy 2020
    greetings Sven

      Sven, many years ago, I had a similar situation. I had a pair (just the pair in a 90G (360L) that spawned and seemed to be 'bonded'. I find that the pair bonds for Paratilapia are not all that strong, to the extent that, if the female isn't ready to spawn, the male, rather than waiting it out, will turn on the female. My male did, preventing her from feeding and keeping her holed up in an inverted flower pot. In more recent years, I have found that if they are kept in a group or 4 to 6 or so, and allowed to grow up together, they will not be anywhere near as aggressive. In fact, the presence of other conspecifics or even heterospecifics like Ptychochromis granidieri will keep the Paratilapia pair bond intact, in that they will 'pull together' against other fish in the tank. So, I don't know if it's too late to go the route of adding at least 2 or 3 other adults. If you can come by them, it would be worth a try. Otherwise your female will be most likely killed. If the tank is large enough (180G (720L) say, you could keep four or so Paratilapia and as many of another species. Crowding tends to curb aggression. Also make sure there is quite alot of structure to provide 'safe havens' for any pursued fish. Females are not very aggressive and won't defend themselves. Good luck.

      @@JimCummingCichlids thanks Jim, thats a lot of helpful info. We have a 125g for the couple. loads of driftwood and rocks. A group of polleni would be too much.

      @JimCummingCichlids  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sven, even adding one or two of a different species that can take care of itself (doesn't have to be Madagascan) can change the dynamics between the pair. It might be worth a try to put in a CA cichlid, say, a Vieja, and see if it makes a positive difference.

    • @JimCummingCichlids
      @JimCummingCichlids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neelesh, they do get pretty large. 40G (160L) would be okay for a growout for maybe 4 young ones. But once they start sexually maturing and reach about 4" (10 cm), they need much more room, at least 100G (400L)

    Hey Jim, its about a year ago since we talked. I've listened to you podcast with "the aquarium guys". I quite enjoyed that one. Our troubles seemed to be the past. We went with extra aquariums. The green terror add wasnt very successful. We first got a female delivered while asking for a male. And when adding a male, babies. Plus I had a succesfull spawn of paratilapia and sold 99% of them. Plus sold all of the gt fry plus female. One of the para fry wasnt growing and i couldnt get my self to sell it or kill it. A year and a half later its grown a bit in its own tank. The parents we devide in different tanks when shit hits the fan. In the podcast u talk about a group of paratilapia being successfull + the best thing is growing them up together. My question, we are building a new tank to replace the livingroom tank. 10 times the size and lots of work but im excited. We would like to be stubborn and focus on the paratilapia. The parents are doing well (together or apart). Is there a way to add more to meet the multiple paratilapia security. Fight the aggression. With our couple being grownup.

    • @JimCummingCichlids
      @JimCummingCichlids  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Sven. It seems that when growing out young ones, the polleni do best in groups, but eventually, once they get older, then I find that the odd one can get picked on and if not removed, will gradually deteriorate in health and possibly be killed. There is still strength in numbers at this point, but another tactic is to add a couple of other species, from the Ptychochromis genus, such as grandidieri, mainty, or oligacanthus. I wouldn't keep Paretroplus with Paratilapia in that in the long term, the Paretroplus can't compete for food and territory and will suffer. How big are you planning the new aquarium to be? A large one with appropriate structure will go a long ways to keeping a colony of polleni stable.

    Jim, good afternoon. We now have succes with hatched eggs. We had eggs and day three i noticed the female started eating the eggs again. i quickly sucked the few that were left out and dropped them in a tumbler. a day later they hatched, tiny polleni's. Now im wondering. Put them back with their mom or seperate then into a empty tank. i have a spongefilter on standby. i would like to see the parenting behavior but fear that she would just eat them. plus there are a few unfertilized eggs in the tumbler (fungus eggs). tricky to get them out.

    • @JimCummingCichlids

      Sven, if you reintroduce the fry, they will get eaten, I'm sure. No, raise them in the other tank. Once free swimming, even though they are tiny, they will be able to take live newly hatched brine shrimp. Congratulations and good luck.
