Fantastic! I've seen videos before where they feed the fish duckweed but I've never seen where anyone has grown it like this. It's perfect. Thank you very much for sharing.
I did something like that in my goldfish pond/pool this summer (practicing for caring for a tilapia pond). I used those stackable baskets, the plastic ones with the slotted holes in the sides. They float well enough. The baskets with the deeply rounded edges worked better than the flat flanged edges as far as floating higher and being more stable. Those baskets cost me about $6 each! Your way would be Much more cost effective. I originally bought the baskets to construct submerged plant pots, but last year the goldies dug in the pots and ...made a peat mess. We all had fun in the pool together on cleaning day though. They love it when I wade in and they get underfoot like cats! Hopefully when and if I get the tilapia most of these kinks will be ironed out. I'll definitely try your floating basket design for my duckweed. Once it forms a mat it's really easy to keep together.
Excellent video! We're starting an aquaponics system and I needed an idea for how to keep the fish from eating all the surface growth. I'm making some rafts today!
Air or a little water flow helps a lot plus warm water. I have read about ideal water testing range but I keep all safe for my fish and plants. In my duckweed beds like the one above my tanks I keep it the same because it need to be safe for my crayfish that live under my duckweed.
I love your videos, THANK YOU so much!!!!! I have been naughty and took the day off (my own company, so okay) but I took the day off for research for Aquaponics. I have been on many websites and videos all day and yours by far are the BEST!!! I love them, I am all about doing things cheaper and thinking out of the box. I actually got a pen a paper and was taking notes. Thank you for your info, much appreciated. The only thing is I am jealous of your underground pond. I live in AZ and no way is my hubby gonna dig in this heat and rock hard clay soil.
Excellent! I don't know if I could grow tilapia up here in Michigan in a zone 5b though. I think the only thing this video lacked was how many fish are you feeding for each one of those rafts.
Grow Dinner Aquaponics You have to commit to caring for your fish. If you like to travel that would be a con I suspect. Also one might grow attached to fish. It's happened to me and you end up just keeping pets : P
Hi! This a great video! I have a couple of questions. I would really like to start my own aquaponics system and use duckweed as an organic feed. Is the reason for growing it in the tank for fertilization? And also what type of fish are in your tank? Are they a certain type of tilapia that are more cold resistant? I live in mississippi so it doesn't get too far below freezing but I don't want to kill any fish or plants out of ignorance :) thanks in advance!
Great video and I would like to follow your example but I need some help in finding were the supplies can be acquired. What kind of styrofoam is safe to keep in the water? Where can I find that styrofoam? Where can I find duck weed?
I'm having problems seeing the kind of duckweed growth in my system that I'd like to. What seems to be the "ideal" ranges for duckweed to multiply at the exponential rate I hear people talking about (2-3 days doubling)...? I have mine growing in a separate container with no airstone, could that be the missing ingredient? If so, I'll probably just build rafts and do what you did in your video.
Great video, thanks! Dumb question: how do I get some duckweed to start with? I am growing in Texas and I understand there are some types (giant duckweed) that are actively prohibited.
Or... use 1.5" expanded polystyrene, which is stronger than 2 pieces of 3/4", and just mount the mesh underneath and up over the edge of the polystyrene.
whats sort of Tilapia are they please the reason i an asking is i have a duck week problem in my fish tanks and i need something to control it but needs to a fish that will not attack my plecs
Moreover, you just need to follow the clear aquaphonics system instruction and save up 70% energy than conventional gardening, get more info here: great7.net/aquaphonics-building-easily
How are you introducing nutrients into your system? Duckweed is competing with the vegetables for the nutrients in the fish poo which come from... duckweed. Imagine pluging one power strip into a second, and then plugging the second back into the first.
And how do they get to the fish waste? In the fish food. And where o they come from for the fish food, the fish waste... So you start out with two phosphorus in your pond. Each week you take out a quarter of a gram in the food that you eat. After 8 weeks how much of the nutrient phosphorus is left in your system to continue this cycle?
Emerson White I don't understand what you are asking, but fish admit waste all the time. Depending on the population of your fish you will get more waste. So if you have a high population and you don't have enough space for more veggies to reduce that waste of a high population, you have to get rid of that waste by other means. He does duckweed, which is like alge which grows from waste and sunlight. It's a closed system, so not only can you grow veggies for yourself, but you can also make free fish feed with duckweed. However, duckweed does grow rapidly, but if you don't have duckweed to feed then you better have a back up. Hope that answered your questions.
CosmoSocrates1986 I think Emerson is trying to say that this is not a closed system. You are consuming nutrients via the vegetables. Since I do not see a Styrofoam toilet seat I can assume you are not "personally" putting the nutrients back. Therefore it is not a closed system. He wanted to know how you put the nutrients back that you or the chickens consumed.
Chickens poop and can be mixed with compost, actually human excrement can as well for flowers and stuff, but not veggies. So technically you are still releasing the nutrients from the system. However, he said that the veggie nutrients would fight with duckweed because they both need the same nutrients from the fish, however, I said having a bigger system base on population would determine how much nutrients is being provided for the plants. More fish = more nutrients. It's closed system because fish need clean water and plants need nutrients from fish poop which clans water for fish. Only thing you are giving is food for the fish which you can do with duck weed, which would make it a closed system.

blackbeltbird I am working this week on a new video that is much better with a few changes of the design
+Grow Dinner Aquaponics did you made the new video?... how often do you feed your tilapia fish?... its a great video btw!!
Fantastic, full of info, simple to understand and follow. Keep'em coming.
Air or a little water flow helps a lot plus warm water. I have read about ideal water testing range but I keep all safe for my fish and plants. In my duckweed beds like the one above my tanks I keep it the same because it need to be safe for my crayfish that live under my duckweed.

This video is great! The raft ideal is fantastic. Ever have a fish jump into one of the rafts? lol
Is there any concern over the foam leeching toxins into the water? Certain grades or brand of foam to use?
Excellent! I don't know if I could grow tilapia up here in Michigan in a zone 5b though. I think the only thing this video lacked was how many fish are you feeding for each one of those rafts.
I cover the pond with rafts to grow as much as I can I not only feed it to fish I feed it to chickens around here and other animals
Each of these methods of gardening has its own pros and cons and can be used for different plants.
Can you tell me the cons of aquaponics?
Grow Dinner Aquaponics You have to commit to caring for your fish. If you like to travel that would be a con I suspect. Also one might grow attached to fish. It's happened to me and you end up just keeping pets : P
How much duck weed is needed per fish if that is all you are feeding them? Thanks.
can you grow grass carp big head carp and tilapia in the same tank?
Thanks for sharing this info. Will put it into practice. Best regards.
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Very useful
I feed duckweed and vegetables from the AP system
Hi! This a great video! I have a couple of questions. I would really like to start my own aquaponics system and use duckweed as an organic feed. When feeding the fish how much duck weed to how meany fish should I feed with. (ratio)

What kind of styrofoam is safe to keep in the water?
Where can I find that styrofoam?
Where can I find duck weed?
I have read duckweed to be invasive, if you are cycling your water aren't you hurting your roots by propagation of duckweed?
Great video
i was wondering if duckweed is your only food source for tilapia
Yes that and veggies from the greenhouse

thank u
Thank you For spending the time to do this video I appreciate it look forward to trying some of these ideas.

Harold Hanlin I would be more than glad to send you some
Grow Dinner Aquaponics Loved the video! Especially how you showed many ways to grow the duckweed. How much for some starter duckweed?
We just try to cover the packaging and shipping
Or... use 1.5" expanded polystyrene, which is stronger than 2 pieces of 3/4", and just mount the mesh underneath and up over the edge of the polystyrene.
Alan Howlett I show how I did it you can do yours as you like 3/4 is what I had around
whats sort of Tilapia are they please the reason i an asking is i have a duck week problem in my fish tanks and i need something to control it but needs to a fish that will not attack my plecs
+Andy Coakes gold fishes love duck weeds
i dont have the tanks for gold fish
SUBSCRIBED!!
I give it away lol Most pond store have it or you can get it on ebay or you pay the shipping I will send you some.
Thanks A Lot:-)
How many rafts this size are necessary to feed say 10 fish?
What size fish?
The cable ties need to be UV resistant. So far I haven't been able to find UV resistant cable ties. Where are they? Not at Harbor Freight for sure.
They are underwater so the will last a few years
when's the new video coming?
+daniel boudreaux Daniel we are working on getting a few new videos should be up soon
Looking forward to it! Just made 2 screened rafts last night. Did mine with PVC. 1" was way better than 3/4" btw. Floats higher.
Any reason somebody couldnt make a raft out of PVC ?
Walt Lars I guess if you have hollow airtight pvc frame that fit in, it will do the same job. But again, I guess Styrofoam is more cost effective.
