Tim Kaine Exposes Betsy DeVos's Charter School Scam

  • Trump’s pick for education secretary Betsy DeVos wants her billionaire friends to be able to set up more cheap, substandard, charter schools all over the country. These schools rake in federal dollars yet aren’t held to any standards. The substandard parts are where the owner class saves (pockets) the money. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola, hosts of The Young Turks, discuss. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. tytnetwork.com/go
"Donald Trump’s nominee for education secretary appeared stumped by senators when they asked her about a federal education law related to discrimination during her confirmation hearing Tuesday night.
Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) asked Betsy DeVos about how she’d enforce the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. IDEA, as the law is known, requires that public schools provide children with disabilities a “free and appropriate” education just like other students.
As DeVos danced around his questions, Kaine grew agitated, asking her point-blank if schools should have to follow federal law.
“Should all K-12 schools receiving government funding be required to meet the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities in Education Act?” he asked.
“I think they already are,” DeVos responded, suggesting that no school is failing to meet the law.
“But I’m asking you a ‘should’ question,” Kaine followed up. “Should all schools that receive taxpayer funding be required to meet [the law]?”
“I think that’s a matter that’s best left to the states,” DeVos responded, essentially saying the federal government should abdicate enforcement of its own law.
Kaine pretty much lost it at that point.
“So some states might be good to kids with disabilities, other states might not be good, and then what? People can just move around the country if they don’t like [the schools]?””*

The problem is the questions require a severe black-and-white answer, and that is not possible to give. She is not going to say YES or NO if what she means is SORT OF, or YES, I want the end goal, but want to get there differently, or YES, I am mostly in favor of that, but not in the following areas, a,b,c,d. If she even started a sentence with YES or NO, the questioner would have chopped it off right there, and it would have been a non-event.

My public education told me that the Native Americans were peaceful before the "English" settlers arrived. They also told me that by 2000 the Amazon Rain forest would be completely destroyed. I would later be asked to participate in a "Model of the U.N." re-enactment that did nothing but glorify what could could be done through centralization of government. I am very thankful to my parents that encouraged me to ask "why?". I was pushed through many advanced types of education and forced into remedial English ,with no explanation, until my teacher kept asking me "How does that make you feel?". Gifted as I was, they couldn't bare to let someone like me loose on the world without their tainted view.

Please, please, please--to all my friends in the states listed below. We cannot have Betsy Devos become the next secretary of education. It's not alarmist to imagine that her tenure in that role would be devastating to public education.
Two Republican senators (Murkowski (AK) - Collins (ME) flipped on Betsy DeVos, Trump's anti-public education billionaire, meaning only ONE vote is needed to deny her.
FRIENDS WHO LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA, OHIO, KANSAS, AND ARIZONA (and also NEBRASKA, SOUTH CAROLINA, KENTUCKY, and FLORIDA) YOU HAVE LEVERAGE. Please call your Senators and ask them to oppose Betsy DeVos. One more vote and she's done.
The most likely to flip are:
    Flake (R-AZ) 202-224-4521
    Toomey (R-PA) 202-224-4254
    Portman (R-OH) (202) 224-3353
    Moran (R-KS) 202-224-6521
    Other possibles:
    Fischer (R-NE)* (202) 224-6551
    Graham (R-SC) (202) 224-5972
    McCain (R-AZ) (202) 224-2235
    Paul (R-KY) (202) 224-4343
    Rubio (R-FL) (202) 224-3041
    Sasse (R-NE) (202) 224-4224
They need to hear from their constituents. Rather than calling an out of state Senator, consider asking your friends in one of these states to call. (That's what I'm doing.) We can win this one.

DeVos seems unaware of the problem that George Bush railed against in the early months of his Administration, before 9/11 consumed his Presidency: the burden of leaving it up to States to decide how public school education was funded, held accountable and held to standards. The failing States generate problems which always spill over on to all other States.
When failing States cut funding or cannot design equitable funding, the education failures cause even more failure down the road. That failure spreads to the resources of other States. The economic impact of States that cannot generate sufficient income to support itself must seek federal bail outs that use up revenue generated from the GDP centers of the nation. These centers are largely Democratic and have been subsidizing the failing States for a long time.
The new tax reforms will make it more likely the successful States will want a greater return of the share of tax revenues they generate and a larger share of funds placed on the national credit card, as they will be paying back the bulk of the borrowed funds .
There are two waves of economic shock coming to all public functions - the steep loss of ready revenues for the federal government and the strengthened desires of GDP producing areas to retain the benefits of the wealth production they create.
The long history of failure of privatizing public education should be more recognized by its advocates. Part of that might include the requirement of a substantial bond from private ventures which can protect public money from being wasted or lost when large private ventures go bankrupt.

I went to the equivalent of a charter school. It was a Catholic school that got government funding, and also got tuition from parents. There were minimum standards of math, science, language as always. But we had the extra benefit of getting an education in things like Catholic theology and social justice. My Physics teacher was a gay atheist, my biology teacher was a Darwinian atheist, my nuns were communists (except my English teacher, who was a Fascist). Prayers and Mass were provided, but not mandatory, and they brought in a Rabbi to teach Jewish theology to the three Jewish students we had. I took all AP classes, which meant that I got a college-level taste of REAL American history, which was intoxicating. They saved on money by having a smaller sports department, teachers who were willing to make a little less to be able to teach in that environment, and by employing nuns, who, being communists, lived in poverty and made next to no salary. It was AMAZING. I don't think this is the type of Charter school Betsy DeVos envisions, however. And that is sad.

I wonder if Betsy DeVos is aware that charter schools don't all have to be Secular or Christian. They can be Muslim. So, all you guys who want to infuse Christianity into American schooling: remember, there are Muslims waiting by to infuse Islam into American Schooling. I am personally not against either option, as long as there is a core of standard education that every American child can recognize in every other American child.

Funny how she said 'federal funding for schools comes with strings attached'.
Said by the woman who donated $200 million dollars to Trump who just so happens to be in the business of running crappy private schools.

Steven said "The problem with your schools is that it is funded through property tax, which is just stupid". This is the heart of the matter, I think. My kids went to great schools because the school system was in a rich area. Also, the kids were privileged, had everything they needed and did not have the pervasive stress that children in poverty endure.

One thing that I thought of concerning victims of bullying: they might not even _graduate_ because they kill themselves or are murdered!
I wonder how Drumpf & Co. would react if it was one of _their_ loved ones on the receiving end of bullying at school.

Um, how about this... no schools receive federal funding! The federal government has no business whatsoever in education. Let states handle their education. Give the choice to the people so that they can choose where and how to send their kids to school (or at all). btw as it stands the ROI for a public school in America ends at the second grade level... let that sink in.

The problem with answering Yes or No, is that if you have to go back on your work you are perceived as a liar. Most issues need to be discussed and modified based on current information. I would prefer someone that wants to look at the facts and make a great decision versus someone that is willing to shoot from the hip to make someone happy.
