    Last year they lost to Czechia in their 1st game and barely won in overtime in finals and back then they had "dream team" so to speak.
    I find it hardly surprising they lost to them now when they gave quite a hard time to the USA when they also have "dream team" this year.
    Czech hockey future looks pretty promising if you ask me.

      Canada wouldn't have won last year if it wasn't for Bedard. Even though he didn't get any points in the gold medal game he's the reason they were able to make it all the way there. That team was nowhere near as good as the team with Crosby and several others. I'm glad they won of course but it certainly wasn't one of Canada's strong teams compared to other years.

      The offensive schemes were like watching something created by someone who read a statistic ">50% of goals are scored in slot" and then created all set plays to shove the puck to the goal between the hashmarks. There was zero creativity and with international ice, you NEED to be able to move east/west. No finish from the forwards of players of this calibre often means they were either uncoached or over coached (meaning the couldn't make decisions because they were scared or too busy reading their own press).

    1) ggs, what a match and what an ending

      I too am Czech, but I was raised in Canada. I spend a lot of time in the CzR, have many friends and have even played some pickup over there. My Czech side, like all Czechs, is incredibly proud of what Czechoslovakia/the Czech Republic (I hate the word 'Czechia') have accomplished in hockey over the decades, and I see a certain rise currently in the Czech game. I think, though, the Czechs need to work on face offs at every level of the game in general (this tournament seems to be a big exception) and team psychology. I suspect that this is a big liability in Czech hockey, especially with national teams that include a high percentage of NHL players.

    I'll tell you like this. Historically, Canada is the best hockey country in the world. But remember our history. For our small country, hockey has been a sacred sport for over a hundred years. You taught us how to play hockey. And in the heart of Europe, where the weather doesn't always favor winter sports, we managed to elevate ourselves among the top 6 countries in the world for many decades. At the turn of the millennium, we truly dominated hockey. In 1998, we won gold at the "tournament of the century" in Nagano. In 1999, 2000, and 2001, we claimed world champion titles in senior hockey. In 2000 and 2001, we secured world champion titles in the under-20 category. In 2005, we won the world championship during the NHL lockout (possibly the highest-quality World Championship in history). 77 players in the NHL. Unfortunately, I end the list of Czech successes there. Then came a gradual decline, almost a dark period. It was truly a frustrating time. The past year and this year give us hope again that we might slowly start to recover. We may never beat Canada as we did at a certain time. But sometimes, it can happen. It's only good for world hockey. Moreover, it seems that our neighbors from Slovakia are also starting to do well. Hopefully, it wasn't just one successful generation, and this trend will continue. Our joy from yesterday's victory is certainly greater than your sorrow from your defeat. I just want to say that it's still your game. But it doesn't hurt for someone to occasionally knock you off the top. :)

      Enjoyed your post. But I really don't think that anyone anywhere considers hockey to be a 'winter sport' anymore. In fact, many (if not most) of the professional hockey powerhouses are located in the desert. When was the last time people skated on frozen ponds in Phoenix or Miami or Dallas or Anaheim or Las Vegas or San Jose? ..or any recent cup-winning city?? In fact, since the very year Gary 'Sawbucks' Bettman took over as hockey czar (1993), no Canadian team has EVER been allowed to win against his rules. Hockey is played on Wall St, not on frozen ponds.

Hockey over the past 30 years with the increase in international players has becoming less exciting, less "Canadian". Is the skill level better? Maybe, but the hockey itself lacks most of the intensity it used to have. NHL playoff games now are less intense that regular season games from the 1980s. World juniors (and junior hockey in general) used to be the most exciting hockey on the planet. I find it pretty mundane and one dimensional now - just no real character.

    Czech guy here! I absolutely loved the match. I was absolutely hyped in the 1st and what I was thinking after the first goal was that Canada has a bad mindset right now and we should score a second goal before the end of the period, because Canada is going to come flying into the 2nd. I was really happy seeing our second goal and here came the 2nd period and what happened was excatly what I thought will and I had a fear it will, Canada tied us. I think we were the weak ones in the second and had little hope we could get back into the game. You can only imagine how happy me, my brother, and my dad were 11 seconds to the end :D
    After all, even though I would love to say that we were the better team, I don't feel like it, the boys were better in the 1st, Canda dominated in the 2nd and the 3rd, let's face it, was a lucky shot. The game was tied in my opinion and we were better when it mattered, not overall.

So if I take into account the current (not historical) difference in the hockey quality of both countries - do you really think that the absence of about 3 players is a good excuse? Based on the way Canada played against Germany and Sweden this was entirely predictable. Lackluster forwards, not shooting when given the opportunity indicated a lack of confidence, average goaltending and even the coaching was sub-par.
    Pretty embarrassing overall.

    I agree with all your points. We just didn’t mesh well and it showed. It showed we didn’t have a star player that was able to pull the team together and get things done. I think the biggest problem was our goaltending. Our goaltender just wasn’t ready for the world juniors.

    So much pressure is put on those young men carrying the expectations of the entire country. Let’s face it hockey has become a world sport and other countries are catching up in skills but I have to say those Canadian kids are all heart. For anyone to criticize is totally unfair. The WJC is by far the best hockey to watch for the true fan.

Now that things have reached this point, next year we can come back stronger than ever.

      Canada also doesn't have good tenders, their best option this year was a 5'11 undrafted tendy. Also Canada has pretty stinky NHL goalies compared to other nations, although Carter Hart is looking like a top 10 tendy this year as Philly somehow has one of the best defences in the league.

    • @BoOhMy
      @BoOhMy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well obviously Torts is the reason Philly's defence is so good but it's still nuts that he's made Sanheim, York, Walker, Seeler, Zemula & Ristolainen an elite defence.

  • @geuros

    I'd like to say, even last year with Bedard, Canada lost pretty handily to Czechia in the group stage and the gold medal game was really close. Both teams have changed a lot and the game was still really close. As a Canadian fan you might be rightfully very disappointed, but Czechia did great. There were many unconverted scoring chances like the crossbar in the first, the penalty shot, there was a missed empty netter in the second and mainly, Czechia didn't need to foul, didn't give power plays for free. This was not a fluke even though Canada was the clear favourite. GG

    I just saw the highlights, but it seems to me that Canada just ran into a hot goalie. That big tender from Czechia is good. Canada controlled most of the play I think but Czechia did a good enough job of collapsing in and not allowing to many grade A opportunities. Congrats to Czechia. Do it for Hemsky!

    Rousseau let in two really soft goals.
    When your tendie is not solid and the D don't feel he's solid it completely changes the game.
    Not saying the Czech's wanted it more and clicked better together as a team, but the Canadian D were playing too cautiously around their goalie and it cost them.

    • @happymann1000
      @happymann1000 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Canadian defensive game had multiple holes. It broke down easily and the defence turned the puck over constantly. Our positioning was not great. Not sure if that is coaching or why that was the case but other teams were much better in this regard.

      @@happymann1000Great observation. I went back and watched the game again and you're 100% right, the Canadian D looked shaky and like you said, were out of position a LOT. Not sure if I just wasn't paying attention to them, but yeah, you're right, they looked like they were chasing the puck a lot.
      Thanks for pointing this out, this for sure had something to do with all the chances the Czech's were getting.

      @@darksaga80 Due to Canada's offence we didn't see other teams in our end as much but you could see a night and day difference in team defence compared to Sweden who was playing excellent in that regard. The Czech to their credit blocked shots like crazy and were committed to keeping the puck out of their net. They gutted that third period out and got a bounce in the end. Great effort on their part and a hard earned win.
